Styles and cadencies meeting and melting on each track: drill and bass, sweet bedtime electronics, micro rhythms and synthetic ambient, even traces of electro. the only constant is mutation.

Altamente divertido.

Eric Gamboa is co – responsible of the emergent label known as Abolipop, wich operates mainly on the city of Guiadalajara. Destreza, one of his projects, offers glitchy breakbeats of a rough nature, and is largely recognized among the IDM enthusiasts . Eric divides his time among Destreza, his e.lebleu (sideral. lo-fi shoegazer) project and his collaboration with Jackson (dubby afrosoul), he is also working in other suprises to come. Subnor (better known as Nasty, although the name Juan Manuel Arias appears in his passport) is part of the multimedia collective known as Xnografikz, ex member of Jungle Empire, a Drum and bass crew, and actually is very happy living in Spain.

Subnor (a.k.a Nasty) and Destreza present Japo-Masú, a work that multiplies each one’s personality to get an schizophrenic-like result that makes of diversity and style mixing its own game, from which, still I have to say, it’s impossible to escape. From the drill and bass frenzy, to sweet bedroom electronica, micro rythms and synthetic ambient, and even traces of electro. Incessant changes on the rhythm (not only along the Ep, but in times, even in the same track), leads us to transit once and again from the known to the unknown, from speed exercises to synthetic tranquility. All of this within the ambiguous territory of what has been called IDM. Real big fun!

Thus, Konfort has been during the last years, a monitor that has found and accurately exposed many of the most interesting electronic sonorities in Mexico. Sectioning their catalogue in Minimum and Maximum textures, this label has welcome –through the edition of ten compilations- a several number of tendencies that ranges from clicks and cuts, and the most minimal IDM, to diverse expressions of 4/4 rythms.

Consumer Type gives us the chance to listen to Zofa live; throughout this ep those who haven’t had the opportunity to appreciate it will realize why it’s one of the strongest offers in reference to the development on stage. Recorded live on august 21st. 2004 at X Teresa (a very old church turned into a space for the arts in Mexico City) Consumer Type represents perfectly the introspection of Zofa, in which he meets with his several influences and finds the possibility of constructing an identity of its own. Intelligently assembled, this set walks around from the atmospheric landscapes to the dancefloor. The use of hardware as well as heavy reverberated and filtered sounds are the components to the very peculiar sound of Zofa’s, an effective hybrid of minimal house and dub that states a new standard of warmness and movement.

Heavily syncopated minimal techno tracks. Microscopic cadencies sometimes flavored with funk, house and dub. With one ambient remix and another one dance foor oriented.

Cristián Cárdenas, digital artist from México City in permanent activity on the audio/visual grounds, has turned plug into an output, since no more than two years now, for his musical creativity. With published tracks under labels like Noiselab, Abolipop Records and Konfort, and his notable participation at the Mutek Mexico Festival, Plug is a synonym of the best minimal house produced in Mexico, and represents a personal project in constant evolution. Responsible of the Filtro Netlabel, and member of themultimedia collective Xnografikz, Cristian’s aesthetic becomes recognizable through the different fields that he penetrates, and his interest to create an available way out to the avant garde electronic in Mexico, helps to the redefinition of the team work which opens a stage of maturity for the Mexican underground electronic musicians.

All of the three tracks in this Ep, are the perfect sample of Plug’s interest to realize, through the experimentation -and microscope on hand- a deconstruction of genres that fit perfectly, using the rhythm base of techno, to the dance floor. From the nostalgic mood of the Low Batt original version, and his flirting with IDM, to the playfully and syncopated spirit of Random (Tente IV) going through the highly reverbed of Micro-Buzz, Plug. Emixes of two well known personalities complete this Ep.: Karras (Manrico Montero, -a.k.a. Linga-, who is also an important producer of ambient and drum and bass, and a d.j. working in Mexico City) inverts polarity of the battery, and re-presents this Low Batt translated to ambient to contemplate the dawn or to surrender to a deep listening session. Meanwhile Panoptica (one of the most representative expressions of Nortec) opposes the original version through an interesting analog line, achieving a piece full charged with crossing references, capable to become a complete success on the dance floor.

Departing from the ambient track Noches de Verano, thirteen Mexican projects show the possibilities of independent electronic music and take us into different forms of ambient, glitch and idm.

When we see all the work realizad by Manrico Montero over the past years, saying that he is one of the most active in the local electronic scene is not a cliché. He is one of the most interested in gaining new spaces for Mexican musicians, his activities included the organization of live music seasons & events since at least ten years back, those events became classic in Mexican nightlife, and showcased the works and interests of different collectives and artists in such places as Marro, La Perla Cabaret, La Faena, among others, and helped in the shaping of Mexican electronic culture. The interests of Manrico are shown through his diverse projects wich include the productions of electro acoustic music, drum and bass, idm and ambient, and dj’ing. He works also under the nicknames of Linga and Karras.

Noches de Verano, originally written and performed by Manrico Montero, is one of the highest moments reached inside the Mexican ambient scene, one that displays Manrico’s experience as a music producer and his capacity to create works with a rich emotional charge. This remix album is a good chance to show what Filtro is about: collaboration between different artists under team work dynamics which, due to the technological possibilities near reach, defeat distance to turn into dialogue, and a common aesthetic approximation to the understanding of music + technology possibilities. This work is a result of these parameters applied, and a showcase of some of the most representative inside the Mexican electronic scene. Included are the remixes by Antena, Laptop Fans, Destreza, Fax, Don Moy, Transistor, Panóptica, Plug, Latinsizer, Tre/Molo Bishop, Flux, and Childs.

Release Date:
2004/10/07

Hailing from Canada, Paranerd’s songs individually reveal themselves like being lost in specific thought. Continuously reflective themes rather than catchy clips with the occasional exclamation point. Unraveling the most vulernable moments. While many electronic musicians utilize repetition and hooks, he has an introverted and personal approach to writing that puts you in a position of wondering where the layers of melody or mood will go next.

As so many favorite albums are created for so many of us, “cold reflect” is the kind of music that someone can identify with. A fitting title for such an emphatic release… And while his style may not be exclusive, his sound is intriguing, personal, and recognizable.

Release Date:
2004/09/30

With a contempt for conventionality and a love for experimentation, Agent 101 creates music that is electronic yet organic, machine yet human. On Frost, for example, you can forget traditional instruments; this Australian artist conducts an orchestra of fat wet boots crunching through snow, of dark leaky basements, of wind whispering through winter wastelands. Its a lesson in evoking mood. Or check out the anthemic On Top of the World, a track which proves that not only can anything be the beat, the beat can be the melody. Rough Sketches may only be an EP, but like the preliminary jottings of a painter, its full of ideas and inspiration. Download the tracks, sit back and enjoy!

Beak – Amoral Mayor Earwig EP {mtk136}

Artist: Beak
Title:
Amoral Mayor Earwig EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk136
Release Date:
2004/09/26

We first hooked up with shadowy U.S. artist Beak earlier in 2003, when he made an ‘absolutely checken’ appearance, providing us with a few choice tracks featuring his unconventional but beautiful twinning of multi-tracked acoustic guitars and harder electronics. But it’s taken us until now to choose the absolutely perfect combination of sweet and savory songs from his extensive, largely publically unreleased output for the enchanting randomly titled ‘Amoral Mayor Earwig EP’.

So, where did we end up? Well, with the loping ‘How A Hot Air Balloon Works’, we have silent impulse into sonic heaven, all surprisingly summery, before new track ‘I Saw Two Of Me’ goes a whole lot more complex, really twisting the guitars and the jittery kitten-y drums together. Meanwhile, the title track simply multitracks weird spokenword interludes and beautifully played acoustic melodies with the pitter patter of drums, and our still-beating heart. Then, a brief interlude for the powerful phasing of ‘Yellow Hat’, before everything falls to piece with ‘Candrea444’, an out of time, out of space, in place rendering of a much more intensely acoustic, hardly normal daddy.

And what did we learn? That it takes time to get things right, that time is on our side, and that when phrased just right, the call of the string can sound like the call of the wild. Many thanks to Beak for teaching us.

Catalog #:
BKTR002
Release Date:
2004/09/24

Our first solo releases comes from Backtrack co-founder Valzi, who releases 14 minutes of distorted waves and beats. Fusing industrial electronics with sweet and naive melodies, valzi’s first official solo release proves to be an enchanting one, filled with emotional landscapes and creeping moments of dark atmospheres and light sequences. A study in contrast.

Artist Comments:
“careless”

they called me a pessimist,
yet I had an unreasonable hope.
maybe this recognition of
senseless faith is pessimism.

a smile that is not a gift
is worthless.
struggle for joy, instead.

they said I was merry,
yet my reverie was meaningless.
maybe this apparition,
was no more than an enormous wish.

without interest, without fear,
without care –
failure has a tart charm.

they called me an optimist,
but i expected the worst.
maybe friendship with disappointment
is a kind of optimism.

savored, memorized moments.
these will not be forgotten,
though attempted.

they said i was visionary,
yet i was unable to see past my hand.
maybe they are also too nearsighted
to see me squint.

dreams are fairies.
they fly on happy thoughts.
we play with them,
dancing on the green carpet.

dreams are ghosts.
they won’t fade to nothing.
we can’t touch them.
every lunge brings face to ground.

still, they must be realized.
then all will be perfect again,
but not under this sky.

-valzi
