Xtatic – A Step Into EDM {BKTR009}

Title:
A Step Into EDM
Label:
 Backtrack
Catalog #:
BKTR009
Release Date:
2006/12/06

xtatic’s first solo release on backtrack employs catchy basslines and electronic melodies, making it easy to forget that he is far outside of what I thought was his standard territory – orchestral and hip-hop music. he skillfully brings us oldschool-style melodies and instrumentation, while remaining original and employing smooth mixing. each track brings back memories of videogames from the mid-90’s. listening almost makes the listener instantly feel cool and collected.

Troupe – Crepuscular {BKTR004}

Artist: Troupe
Title:
Crepuscular
Label:
 Backtrack
Catalog #:
BKTR004
Release Date:
2005/02/23

Troupe’s first big ol’ EP is finally here! Troupe has been releasing dandy music for quite a while now, especially once you fully realize that he’s only a sixteen-year-old. Perhaps it is because, he lives in texas where there are music-enhancing cows and cacti, or maybe it’s just because he hangs out with our friend xerxes so much. Whatever the case, he sure knows how to bring a relaxing melody that minimalistic oldschool touch.

Artist Comments:
if i had a window,
this is what i would be able to see out of it as night fell,
as the clouds rolled away, as the stars began to shine.
look beyond our atmosphere into the never-ending abyss of space
and relax to 17 minutes of electronic music.

this is crepuscular.

Vitax – Micromania {BKTR003}

Artist: Vitax
Title:
Micromania
Label:
 Backtrack
Catalog #:
BKTR003
Release Date:
2005/01/10

in his backtrack debut, vitax presents us with 18 minutes of the excellence I’ve begun to expect from him. tangy mood is king in vitax’s house, and the king really likes his jazzy melodies and trippy house beats. somehow, one can’t help bouncing to “playback” and “unforgettable” with pensive joy. “the violet sphere” and “micromania backtrack mix)” sneak past body-motion and groove with heart’s feet. trust your uncle valzi: these sounds’ll grab ya and hold ya tight.

Artist Comments:
time buried the old chiptunes, but we still remember them; that’s why I decided to use some analog synthesizers to play with some simple sounds. each song also contains well-known instruments (pads, piano, bass and etc.), but the presence of lo-fi sounds is felt in each song. Such experiments have formed an original genre without a name, without rules – just emotional, easy listening. i hope my music will be interesting to you, even after a lapse of time. thanks to all people.

Valzi – Careless EP {BKTR002}

Artist: Valzi
Title:
Careless EP
Label:
 Backtrack
Catalog #:
BKTR002
Release Date:
2004/09/24

Our first solo releases comes from Backtrack co-founder Valzi, who releases 14 minutes of distorted waves and beats. Fusing industrial electronics with sweet and naive melodies, valzi’s first official solo release proves to be an enchanting one, filled with emotional landscapes and creeping moments of dark atmospheres and light sequences. A study in contrast.

Artist Comments:
“careless”

they called me a pessimist,
yet I had an unreasonable hope.
maybe this recognition of
senseless faith is pessimism.

a smile that is not a gift
is worthless.
struggle for joy, instead.

they said I was merry,
yet my reverie was meaningless.
maybe this apparition,
was no more than an enormous wish.

without interest, without fear,
without care –
failure has a tart charm.

they called me an optimist,
but i expected the worst.
maybe friendship with disappointment
is a kind of optimism.

savored, memorized moments.
these will not be forgotten,
though attempted.

they said i was visionary,
yet i was unable to see past my hand.
maybe they are also too nearsighted
to see me squint.

dreams are fairies.
they fly on happy thoughts.
we play with them,
dancing on the green carpet.

dreams are ghosts.
they won’t fade to nothing.
we can’t touch them.
every lunge brings face to ground.

still, they must be realized.
then all will be perfect again,
but not under this sky.

-valzi

we’re re-releasing the first backtrack release, a chipdisk, with mp3s so that anyone can hear it, even if they don’t have windows OS or know what a module is! we hope that you will, however, investigate module and chipmusic, once you have a taste of this charming bleepy music. oh, don’t forget: if a song ends abruptly, it is probably meant to loop continuously until you get tired of it, so set your mp3 player accordingly.

backtrack’s first release was a chipdisk for a few reasons. mostly, we thought a huge chipdisk would be a cool way to start with a bang (or at least a few blips.) now, we wonder if we will ever even do another chipdisk. it was great fun, and there was a lot of talent on it.

nineteen artists were involved in the making of this thing, not counting the poor souls whose not-quite-fitting tunes were rejected. all this work adds up to 29 tunes and approximately 70.5 minutes of music for us.

please realize, though, we are not a chipgroup. a few of us enjoy making chiptunes, but some do not even know how.

many thanks to our wonderful guest-releasers! beautiful music, i must say. really, most of you guys and even the actual members (!) totally amaze me. i would never have imagined, i would be working with such talent so soon. thanks for letting me.

-valzi
