Planet Boelex – Misplaced EP {mtk163}

Artist: Planet Boelex
Title:
Misplaced EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk163
Release Date:
2006/03/19

We’re delighted to be able to release Finland’s idm maestro Planet Boelex’s third EP for Monotonik, ‘Misplaced’, following some enchanting EPs and single releases for netlabels including Ogredung, Aerotone, and Afe Records. Actually, it’s arguably the most reflective of the bunch, even including guest vocals and guitar, as Ossi, aka Boelex himself, stretches across ever more expansive, ambient Scandinavian vistas.

The first track out of the gate, ‘Only Slightly Distant’, showcases a style that’s even smoother than normal, all pitter patter in the night, before ‘Diciassette Anni’, which includes vocals written and performed by Valentina Gualtieri in Italian, drifts rather slinkily into view. Most intriguing of all is probably ‘Seadreamers’, including acoustic guitar by U.S. musician Travis Nobles (who also provided the cover art for this release), and providing a very different atmosphere for this particular excursion.

Thus, we finish up with ‘Last Stone’, which we won’t leave unturned or unlistened, thanks to a little more signature melodic interplay from Planet Boelex, as his music gets more sophisticated, more chilled, and more enjoyable all at once. Again, we thank him.

Artist: iua
Title:
eee ooo ahh
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[one025]
Release Date:
2006/03/12

IUA brings a softer side to crispy, creeky, abrasive electronic music through the bright and hazey baths of noise and percussion that deliever his distinct vocals and melodies. A graceful slow motion momentum reiterated by smooth rhythms, airy instrumentation, scattered piano, guitar, and moments of breezy noise pop.

The title – derived from the 3 common sounds of speech spanning all languages – perhaps lends itself to Mike Shusta’s vocals which are not in all instances phonetically cohesive or clear, yet leaving no question of or distraction from their emotive slant and importance.

‘Over the Archway Remixes’ accompanies this release – a collection of remixes featuring Aghost, Khonnor, Octopus Inc., Proswell, and Wankersunited – which can be found here.

When the idea first came up to do a series of remixes for IUA’s release ‘eee ooo ahh’ we first suspected we would turn to the family-like list of One musicians, but it turned out Mike was eager to recruit the remixers himself so we let him have at it. Not only are the results pleasing but they were in such numbers that it was decided to do a seperate release. Which is what you have here.

This collection of remixes for IUA’s ‘over the archway’ features talent familiar to many. Some (Proswell, Octopus Inc, Aghost) are contributors to the label Kracfive (a favorite of ours)- who Mike himself has battled in the past by participating in the ever on-going Iron Chef of Music. The others, Khonnor and Wankersunited, are no strangers either – particularly with the former’s well recieved release at Type Records.

Sabi – Unsui EP {mtk162}

Artist: Sabi
Title:
Unsui EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk162
Release Date:
2006/03/05

Japanese artist Sabi, aka Taro Peter Little, has been releasing on Monotonik since the late ’90s, when we were called Mono, and his .MODs under the name of Taro were, heh, almost controversial for being lo-fi and crunchy. Since then, he also released the ‘Four Thousand Years EP’, and has also had tracks and remixes on compilations from Merck, Saag Records, and Hydrogen Dukebox.

Anyhow, ‘Unsui EP’ is a beautifully ambient collection of 4 tracks that Sabi compiled specially for Monotonik release, starting with the street chat and oddly addictive real-life ambience of ‘Right After The Ending’. Next up, ‘Un’ actually strays remarkably close to microhouse, with pitter-pattering percussion and a remarkably addictive groove.

After another neat ambient interlude, things get finished off in style with the similarly robust ‘Sui’, which again, is surprisingly listenable for being so many sharp sounds, and showcases Sabi’s distinctly different style – we certainly hope to hear more of it in the future.

Catalog #:

Release Date:
2006/02/24

Bitflow is the search of digital processes in 4×4 on which seven projects located in diverse parts of the country lay their foundations, rescuing their strong Jamaican music influences and transferring them to the Mexican present where a concrete evolution of Dub music as a sort is already established inside diverse genres such as IDM or Dancefloor-related music.

Chromatic range of resources, artisan techniques and a vision and wish to reframe Digital Dub, is what appears in this compilation; producers like Fax with a soft way to interlace microsounds and traditional processes from Analogous Dub, Karras introducing extracts of feminine voices rescuing soul as well as jamaican syncopation, Sanchez Dub, a mexican bass player who explores the tendencies of Minimal Dub Tech as well as a remarkable use of delay in his breaks and Plug, who gives us an advance from his forthcoming album “Cesped” showing a balance between his syncopathed rythms and house, also, he does not hide his influence from big drums of Dub Roots. Bifidus shows us other schemes of production from those we know before, he takes us to atmosphere formed by sequences, glitches, strong bass lines and processes of dub.Emmerichk a new talent presented by Filtro who has also released an EP in this second stage of the label works here inside the digital minimal tecnho and dub; Antiguo Automata Mexicano presents voice samples at a low rate, watery and titillating sounds, of thick textures that melt across this sonorous stroll full of contrast.

Bitflow is exploration and intrigue; if all time black music influences penetrate diverse parts of the world this is our way to feel these vibrations: delays, reverbs and solid bases, accompanied by a meticulous skank with sonorous landscapes like a drop curtain.
