Release Date:

substance is back in the tracker scene after quite some break. this can be explained by the lack of time and also because of other more serious music projects. however, a new track is announced here and it was composed the good old times in mind. the attempt was to create same kind of atmospheres that were for example in richard d. james’ or boards of canada’s former material before the digital revolution.

the track is very melodic and simple, but what counts is the feeling that overcomes by flow. i hope you all like it.

Bulentoi – The Bulentoi {rel#77}

Artist: Bulentoi
Title:
 The Bulentoi
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
rel#77
Release Date:
2000/03/14

“The Bulentoi” is a minimal electric/ambient tune consisting mainly of a minimal drum beat and a simple but beautiful melody played with a slightly filtered and reverbed sine-like sound. Even a nice pad sound is present at one point. The drums aren’t very complicated – just a simple repetitive bass/snare combination with occasional hihats and zaps. I think the drums couldn’t be much better. The melody couldn’t be much better either. This track is a professionally crafted tune and has a very nice overall sound. This is a welcome change for people who are bored with fast idm beats and prefer more melodic music and a little less of everything for a change.

we bring you again, mysterious world of electronics by the master of weird sound textures, a/oc. it’s actually funny how he combines those industrial sounds with modern drum machines. we have heard same sort of atmosphere already before in his debute release. a/oc has found his style, which is definately something to look up for. this time we’re presenting ‘philips’ which comes from our northern finland headquarter, oulu.

news flash: http://www.ion.sci.fi/~kuu/voodoo/ is online now. it is still at beta level but so far it’s been tested to be working on various browsers. you can get all the voodoo releases from there archived with zip and also read some information about the group.

new members can still be recruited so if you think you handle the style so precious to us, you are welcomed to e-mail me with one example of your music. but to ease this project, you are required to also have some experience on the previous tracks released to avoid from being disqualified. voodoo is strict of it’s style. e-mails must be directed to kuu@ion.sci.fi with subject ‘voodoo apply’.

Release Date:
2000/03/03

at first i’d like to apologise the break i’ve had from releasing tracks. it’s got nothing to do with bad support from our members, not even close since i’ve got many songs lying on my harddisk. i’ve simple had no time to concentrate on group business lately and i hope you accept that. however we are back again and even bigger after roz re-joined the group. he’s the master of 4 channel mods today and that’s why we are representing his new material today.

this song,’games of sphere’is very well built drum’n’bass track in the intense theme. roz has succeeded well and for making all this into 4 chans it makes it even more interesting. really fab song and if there was some minor point to complain, it would probably be the oldschool sound of it. that is not important on tracker release and that’s why we won’t complain. please welcome roz and his weinberg 7.

new members can still be recruited so if you think you handle the style so precious to us, you are welcomed to e-mail me with one example of your music. but to ease this project, you are required to also have some experience on the previous tracks released to avoid from being disqualified. voodoo is strict of it’s style. e-mails must be directed to kuu@ion.sci.fi with subject ‘voodoo apply’.

very gentle piece, and this time kritix even experimented with some biting acid baselines. the mix between static sinebasses and some shuffeled chords make stukk a really worthy successor of tonik funkture.

H.Kyllönen – fourfour {rel#76}

Artist: H.Kyllönen
Title:
fourfour
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
rel#76
Release Date:
2000/02/16

The track starts with a sound of someone walking along with speech samples of K.Ylikulju. Then a depressing feedback noise which lasts for the rest of the tune joins in to the background making you expect something… something hard maybe? Well, you get it. A very aggressive bassline/bassdrum sequence with hard compression and modulation/filter combination gets rolling on. The rest of the track is based on this sequence which never repeats the same, the occasional pauses are filled with more speech. This is a very aggressive and depressing tune which could do with more instruments and variation though (like some additional drum sequences or another more melodic bassline?) but you get a hiquality hard iem tune that won’t leave you cold. You might need some ear protection though.

01 – nalok (introductal) [4:43]

pretty nice intro, string, speech & the usual stuff, you could say. in some parts the strings are too ‘heavy’, i mean they are too high volume. the middle part is echoed voices and sweeped strings, going all the way to the end. for my taste, this track is a little bit too monotonous, i mean it uses all the effects & tricks introduced on millions of other ambient tracks. but don’t get me wrong, this track is not bad.

[80%]

02 – uiku natural [7:05]

strings and pretty bizarre-sounding effects start this track. sweeping strings sound nice, but they are too much in background and the effects are too much in foreground, in my opinion. the theme is same, through the whole track, there are just small variations, as far as i can notice. without the bizarre effects this track would be the best in the ep.

[84%]

03 – phlow [5:03]

nice, uptone strings start this track with a bit fuzzy -sounding effect in background. pretty good, perhaps too monotonous comp comes in, merged with nice strings. the track continues with bassline and a bit too sharp melody. nice track, the comp, although it’s repetitive, gives a nice edge to this track.

[84%]

04 – phlow (end) [7:35]

this track starts with reverbing sound, which soon transforms into semi-majestetic strings. the melody is nice, except some looping problems disturb the harmony. the melody changes it’s mood for a while; it sound quite sad. but not for long; the original melody, with loud strings comes back, with beat this time. the beat is quite simple, but it still fits into the track. this is quite good track, except for too loud strings and few bad sounding loops.

Eksajoule

Catalog #:
mtk014
Release Date:
2000/01/27

There’s still time to introduce new artists we think are rather spiffing here, and Finland’s Lindon would be one of those. “Eksajoule” is a driftingly backed rhythmic idm treat, with mini-drum-fireworks lit every few seconds and a backing lilt which is truly beautiful. Some more of that more melodic idm that we like so much chez monotonik? We fear so.
