A new jazzy tune by Substance (aka kuu). You might know him from his numerous release. Rumor has it, that he’s probably one of the best jungle musicians on the tracker scene in Finland, but this one is really gonna surprise you. Nice samples, funky drums, smoky piano all mixed into a nice relaxing track. Hemf…… very nice……. hoping to hear more from the jazzy side of Substance later on.

Pete E.

I got this mail from the CutOff productions where they asked me to track something for them diskmag, at least that’s what it was called at the time. anyway, i promised, as they said they loved my earlier stuff. no problem i thought, kind cool actually. and i started to plan something, but as usual i had several other projects running at the time. like composing music for our live performance, demotapes and also for massive amount of different productions in my own, favourite, amiga scene 🙂 it was tough job to make out and i had to choose from a couple of unfinished tracks, as the time was running too fast. after i planned on some triphop/bigbeat shit, and never got it finished, i started working on this jazzy track “towerhillstreet jam”, which i was quite pleased of. the origin of the track name comes from my street address, that’s a direct translation from my mom language. i sampled some more jazz records and sample cd’s to achieve the atmosphere i was looking for. by the way, those maximum cool vibraphone sounds are from my friends yamaha cs1x synth, some new synths really has the touch, even i persoanlly respect old analogic synths more. but anyway, then finally, i managed to compile a track, which got to be released on their prod, i hope you enjoy the groove. sincerely yours, substance

Release Date:

Another substantial release from the marvellous minimal-trancer, and this time a mellower track, twinned with a trademark phasing, hihat-smearing tune. 4 channels ain’t dead. 🙂 There’s more to come – watch out for a distinctly non-trademark triphop track from Substance in the coming releases. Whee, and what’s more, wheee.

Substance – Sladdfack {MOD#40}

Artist: Substance
Title:
Sladdfack
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#40
Release Date:
1996/10/02

Substance strikes back with a Mono release which isn’t minimalist trance. 🙂 In fact, Substance’s style extends way past tranceland (check out the melodic junglism of his Assembly96 tune, “The Hub”, or indeed “Drum+Bass Frenzie”), and this time he’s cooked up an intriguing tekno with metal breaks and frazzled synths piece, inspired by a certain Aphex Twin collaborator, Mike Paradinas. Nice, sorted, and damn original. Oh, and the title means something very silly in a non-English language.

When our brainwaves aren’t stimulated, we run the risk of becoming brain dead. Substance has negated this risk with his very own minimal response to the question “are we here?”. This is possibly the deepest Mono has got into the science of nothing meaning everything – keep listening, you’ll understand in the end. maybe.

Already out on ‘limited dub plate’ lha-archive release, but only available to the very luckiest of Amiga owners, this storming intelligent drum+bass track now comes out via official Mono methods. Turn those speakers _up_, sonny, before we come round and tell you to turn them up some more. And watch out for a “Minimal Response EP” from the utterly charming blonde Substance-abuser.

It’s difficult to find anything to say about this tune, because it’s just so…. mmmmm. The drums, the melodies, the style seem to mesh like Sabres of Paradise managed so well on “Smokebelch”, and Substance is truly the jewel in Mono’s crown. Just you wait til we start releasing his drum n bass tunes, then you’ll truly freek out. 🙂 Overstated, us? never. 😉

Zenith Aura EP

Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#010
Release Date:
1996/05/25

Well, the debut Mono release from Substance is an EP of some of the best trance-MODs I’ve ever heard. Yeah, yeah, I’m biased, but who can deny that these tunes kick considerable ass? “Zenith Aura” throws the percussion round like some serious mechanical maniacs got let loose in your computer, “Monotone” phases and hits like a pipe-toking robot bad-ass mofo, and “Trips Of Orange Capsules” is flowing, experimental, and relaxing all at once. There ain’t no doubt that this is one of the best Mono releases so far, so enjoy it while it lasts. 🙂
