emotional layers of happier atmosphere.
interesting the retro-electronica tracks
its straight four to the dance-musical
but he never bleak.

showing us the joy of their tiny
hot nights on the present draws
good times as the 80’s is
nostalgia-flash and techno, fascination

the shape and a way to a flat plateau.
the gameboy music is a wilful twisted groove.
but aftermath feelings…

Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY028
Release Date:
2006/08/30

Now it’s time for yet another virtual 12″ vinyl, don’t you think? Well, irrespective of what you think, it IS time for another virtual 12″ vinyl. And this time it’s time for Psilodump, a very experienced musician who’ve been releasing his music on vinyl, CD and many other mediums, to do his debut in the virtual 12″-community.

“I think this is a big step for me and my musical carrier.” Psilodump says. “I like the virtual 12″- community a lot, many of my friends are virtutwelveinchers themselves, even my girlfriend is, so I’ve been feeling very frozen out not having any virtual 12″ on my discography. So this is a really important landmark for me.”

And it’s a landmark indeed!

A1. ROOM WITH NO EXIT (PART 476)
Psilodump is trapped in a room from which he cannot escape. But, how did he get in here, when there are no doors to the room?

A2. DO NOT WANT (KATZEKATZEKATZE-REMIX)
Katzekatzekatze is visiting the world of Psilodumps virtual 12″ vinyl. But he doesn’t want to, and is screaming loud and bad “Do not want!”

B1. NINJASNAKES (DISKMEDEL MIX)
We’ve all heard the story about a princess kissing a frog, turning the frog into a prince. But have you heard the story about the ninja kissing the snake and the snake is turning into a frog and the ninja’s turning into a ninjasnake? Psilodump has, and he won’t be shy to tell you that story…

B2. OK, SO THE NINJAS WENT TO SPACE
This is the continuation of the previous song. The ninjasnake and the frog are, together as friends, travelling into outer space. Just to find you there…

Kuu – Ioplus EP {mtk170}

Artist: Kuu
Title:
Ioplus EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk170
Release Date:
2006/08/27

This is, believe it or not, the first Monotonik release for Kuu (formerly known as Substance, and definitively known as Finland’s very own Joonas Vahamaki) since 1999 (!). But after a 7 year absence, we’re delighted to welcome him back to the fold with the awesome ‘Ioplus EP’, 4 tracks of beautifully crunchy IDM.

Since we last released music from him, he’s done a bunch of neat work for various labels, most recently returning to the breakbeat hardcore massif with fellow Finn Niko Virta and their duo Nervous & Anxious, which has releases on UK oldskool breakbeat labels like Enormous Mouse Records, Mert Wax and Hardcore Projectz. But this material is definitely Monotonik-ish, led off by the looping, almost cosmic ‘Io’.

There’s plenty more goodness in here too, though – ‘Rosa’ is all crunching beats and carefully rising and falling moods, much like the .MODs Joonas used to compose for us as Substance in the early days of Mono. Things finish out with ‘Pine’ and then ‘Bonus Track’, which is low profile and loopy and finally transcendental. Plenty of kicks, right?

V.A. – Región 4 {[FILTRO.019]}

Artist: V.A.
Title:
Región 4
Label:
 Filtro
Catalog #:
[FILTRO.019]
Release Date:
2006/08/25

Consumption of new technology has again divided the world into zones; Filtro takes advantage of this phenomenon and uses it as a pretext to release Region 4; a new compilation which generates a dialogue between Jamaican dancehall music, reggaeton, dubstep, its applications dance music trends suchs as UK’s Grime as well as the own minimal and idm sounds from our label’s musicians.

Región Cuatro incluyes Filtro’s most recent affiliates: Rivel (California) and The Copy Violators (Jalisco, Mex) as well as members and friends of the label, such as: Destreza, Kampión, Karras, Lao, Mhv and Plug. From dark, heavy basses, soca’s deconstructions and minimal reinterpretations of dancehall music to fragmented regaetton and digital “cut and paste” turned dancehall, Región 4 is the soundtrack for an age where the popular culture has taken a lot from the constant flow of Caribbean music and it different approaches.

The blurry geographic frontiers produced by digital globality materialize in the shape of Filtro’s new search: Región 4. The cultural exchange produced through the digital medium has generated a cultural malleability. Much like a migration that traces a center less, rhizomatic path without a defined starting point, the trajectory of Dub and all of its derivations, filtered through phenomena like grime or British dubstep, and finding itself again with specific local elements, is present today more than ever in a great spectrum of pop culture: from the reggaeton boom in worldwide radio, to the image of music channels. The recognition of these various rhythms and sounds as part of its roots rotates in the orbit of anything but few Mexican independent electronic music producers.

Región 4 creates a dialogue between Jamaican dancehall, reggaeton, and the sounds and tendencies of the label’s own artists, who usually group themselves in the realm of minimal dancefloor and IDM. This way, sonorities pertaining to the region 4 (which includes Australia, New Zealand, the pacific islands, central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean islands) flow through the same point to be transformed into a hybrid that not only gives enough to reflect on the technology/culture circuit, but also puts into a manifesto the influences, evolution, and the label’s renovated musical identity. It results paradoxical that arbitrarily generated regional codes created to control the access to digital content depending on the geographical zone work in an opposite fashion at a conceptual level to produce a new interpretation of the sounds of region 4.

The newest addition to Filtro’s catalogue, Rivel, a California native producer, exposes his vision Ruff Bizzness from dancehall through obscure lows fused with island rooted vocals. Through his track “Rio Bamba”, Karras in dub contributes his distinctive dubby resonance and metallic textured echoes to offer tribute to dub’s most classic roots, while Lao decides to engage the genre from the perspective of minimal techno, creating a peculiar track called “Zooka”, a clear fusion of analogous and digital dub. With “Bitskit”, Plug reduces dancehall to mere cold and digital frequencies that manage in someway to keep dub’s singular warmth. In the line of sounds designed for the dance floor, Destreza executes his vision of soca, changing the soul spirit of this genre and using glassy textures to amplify the rhythm of calypso, creating a sonorous equilibrium between organic rhythms and digital variations with “Like tigers in the back of your car seat”.

Amplifying the sonorous temperature of reggaeton and set to take it to the technical limit of laptop music, MHV alters the frequencies of this massively acclaimed genre and fuses drills in “38 grados”. The overlaps of digital cut and paste take the shape of dancehall in the track of the copy Violators, a duet from Guadalajara next to present an ep with Filtro. Kampion engages the electronic possibilities of Caribbean music with the track “Popotla Sound Machine”, a complete deconstruction of reggaeton that offers a danceable sound of various fragmentations. The track counts with the visual support of Filtro’s first netvideo created by Arturo Gil from Xnografikz using the same technique of audio microsampling for visual production. With the online release of this video, we enter a new stage where we assume a great dedication to the aspects of graphics, visuals, and design and a search for the deconstruction of our own schemes, leaving in evidence our own multi-disciplinarian origins.

Rivel – What’s the dub of it all EP {[FILTRO.018]}

Artist: Rivel
Title: What’s the dub of it all EP
Label: Filtro
Catalog #: [FILTRO.018]
Release Date: 2006/08/25

Straight form California, USA, Rivel delivers his first release on Filtro: What’s de dub of it all, five tracks that seem to come from a THC-exposed CPU. Heavy, smoked IDM beats wrapped with post-reggae chords and strong basses generating what someone may call electroreggae; this, along with more gentle soundscapes, a lot of influences from the Jamaican music and an experimental twist make Rivel’s music depart from most of the known electronic dub. The EP includes 3 remixes of Rivel’s music produced by Bifidus, Plug and Subnor.

As if this rhythmical puzzle had finished its assembly on the streets, the music of Rivel maintains an urban spirit that gives it a very personal flavor, one that pays attention to the street soundtrack of some lost district along the border.

The EP includes 3 remixes of Rivel’s music produced by Bifidus, Plug and Subnor; whereas Bifidus gives us a translation of Can’t keep that turns the piece into a discreet and deep mood that takes dub into realms of diaphanous daydreams, Plug, with the same piece, follows the outlines of dancehall to create a sub-acuatic landscape of delays and degraded textures. Finally Subnor confronts his slight knowledge of the IDM with the rythmical foundations of Rivel, turning them into some kind of artificial, frenetic jungle.

Aleksi Eeben – Spaceman Far Away From Home {mtk169}

Artist: Aleksi Eeben
Title:
Spaceman Far Away From Home
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk169
Release Date:
2006/08/06

Seriously, what else is there to say about Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat? Way back in 1990 or so, when he was in his early teens, he produced some of the best music the Amiga has ever heard. As his talent grew throughout the ’90s and into the new century, his jazz influences and unique retro electronic background (he also codes music composition software for the Commodore 64, Game Boy and even VIC-20) have produced an unbelievably unique style.

The spectacularly tonally different stylings of Eeben, who works at a ‘famous cellphone company’ in his native Finland on sound-related products, are showcased in this album for Monotonik, ‘Avaruusmies kaukana kotoa’, aka ‘Spaceman Far Away from Home’. An early highlight is the wonderfully busy skank of ‘Spaceman’s Small Step’, or ‘Avaruusmiehen pieni askela’, but everything just glows, with ‘Avaruusmiehen alakulo’, aka ‘Spaceman’s Low’, another beautiful example of Aleksi’s differences. We end with a couple of bonus tracks, with ‘Traveller’ a particular highlight, all sinuous melodies that just range in the oddest, wonderfullest ways.

So, we’re not saying it isn’t an acquired taste, but when you acquire it, you’re likely to never forget it. And while you’re listening, you can read the accompanying story behind the album: ‘Adventures of Spaceman John’, by Kristoffer Lawson, as follows:

“Far away, John and his robot were sailing on the backs of star-beams. Fifty light-years or so in their cylindrical spaceship. Robot said he liked the way the star’s light bounced off the red planet, a giant one, on the port side. Like shimmery little fairy dances circling around their travels through the void. John smiled and lifted his glass of space-juice in an ancient gesture of comradeship. Aye, that’s life at it’s best, he reckoned.

After three more days of travel John and his robot arrived at Destination 34. A large moon around the fourth planet of the system. A jolly wee bouncy kind of rock with scampering little bacteria and small fish-like creatures swimming in the deep dark lakes. Some of them had fluorescent colours and shone brightly and merrily. Some of them were mating, some of them were jiggling, some of them were just having a party. Robot blinked his lights in response and several of the lifeforms twirled round him, curious. He did not seem like a proto-fish. He was all hard and jagged. Like a rock of some kind. John patted him. They’ll understand one day, he reassured.

Inside one of the caves was a dark slithery plant, waving slightly with the drifts, as if to a distant melody. She beckoned to the travellers and they floated to investigate, transfixed. Her many hands swayed erotically. Her deep colours changed with every move. She gently touched John’s cheek as he looked closely, with robot soon behind. He kissed her leaf-wrist and bid her good bye, for their journeys must go on.

Back in their spaceship John sighed. Robot was a good companion but still his life missed something. A home to come to. An arm to stroke. Lips to kiss. Hair to feel. Of all the wonders in the universe he had seen, no wonder would replace that simple existence. Robot shut down for the night. The computers rattled on. John looked out into the deep, deep darkness and its millions of sparkling lights. Lives. He fell asleep holding their hands as the spaceship zoomed on and on into the empty unknown.”

Liquid Stranger vs Dorothy´s Magic Bag – Banana(Electro)Split {CANDY027}

Artist: Liquid Stranger vs Dorothy´s Magic Bag
Title:
Banana(Electro)Split
Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY027
Release Date:
2006/08/05

Behold the new virtual, unlimited, transparent red split-electro-12” with Liquid Stranger and Dorothy’s Magic Bag, ready to shake your virtual dance floor!

“A virtual 12”?” you may ask, with a corny scepticism glued to your voice. In fact a virtual 12” is much more convenient than a physical one: it takes up less space, it has got less of the bad smell and is much easier to hide away when thieves are coming at night.
If you choose to print it on paper you’ll see even more advantages, like the possibility to store hundreds of printed virtual 12” vinyls in 1 (one!) vinyl cover… And if they get damaged; no problemosadas: just print out another one!

We will continue with this winning concept, and will hopefully be able to, some day, release our own collection binder (virtual of course)… just like Aphex Twin (the master of collection binders).

A1. LIQUID STRANGER – PRESS PLAY ON TAPE
The exciting story about a c64 showdown in outer space. Classic electro from 1995.

A2. LIQUID STRANGER – SMEARTEST
It is important to do regular smeartests every now and then. If the track doesn´t play as smooth as you would prefer, then you´ll know it is time for another lubrication.

B1. FEMALE VOICE
Always wanted to have a more feminine voice? Then this is the stuff for you.

B2. TRANSYLVANIA
In Transylvania, the land of vampires, you’ll find much more than you’ll expect. Ice cream for example…

Catalog #:
YKYK006
Release Date:
2006/07/29

Emmerichk’s second EP finally made it over the big pond and is a definite proof that Mexico’s rising scene for electronic music is easily able to compete with Europe’s artistic sprawl.
Nebadon offers Minimal House tunes with an edge. Crispy clicks and cuts garnish warm floating chords at cosy minor over a well composed layer of hypnotically pounding rhythms – never to fast to spoil the relaxed scenery.
And it is a real pity that all delightful listening has to end after only six tracks. Frequent use of the Repeat button is highly recommended.
