after some short period of silence, we are up to release new material from a/oc. the track achieves some funky bigbeat atmosphere by using only small beats though. the bass loop is pretty catchy and it’s hard to describe the feelings this song gives, but personally i’m turning more into the ‘silly’ level 🙂 aki has played the guitar by himself and inserted some skit bits into this track.

The Rave-O-Lution Has Been Terrorised – Best Of Subi 1989-2000

Catalog #:

Release Date:
2000/05/28

As promised, and as most of you have been dreading/looking forward to, the Subi best-of retrospective has finally arrived.

Throughout his 11 years making music in the Amiga ‘demo-scene’ and outside, Sam Brown, aka Subi, and formerly known as Subculture, has always shown originality and a doggedness that’s characterised his excellent output. The typical Subi release blends cheeky samples, breakbeats, and rampant catchiness to produce something that’s pretty much unlike most of the other music out there – and that can only be good.

A veteran fan of the oldskool hardcore/ravescene, Subi, who works as a computer game developer in Manchester, England, has been producing his odes to classic rave/breakbeat with the help of his guitar and battered analog synths, but almost always working on his trusty 4-channel Amiga computer, which is what every single one of these tunes are composed on, amazingly.

So, rejoice in the classic oldskool breakbeat blends, and watch as “The Rave-O-Lution Has Been Terrorised” wends its way through twisted Spice Girls homages and student catastrophe-sampling hardcore tunes as Subi, well, does as only Subi can do 🙂

Label:

Release Date:

What’s with the title? Well, it’s ‘Chip Van Winkle’ in the sense that Vim!’s output is still roundly slept on. When, oh when, is someone going to sign him up for his major record label debut, Esther?

In the meantime, we don’t have any funny-looking vegetables for you, but we do have this compilation of the Vim! .MOD ‘chiptune’ (that’s .MODs using very small instrument samples, fact fans!) output from the past few years. Highlights include any number of messed-up ‘Ghost And Goblins’-influenced drill+bass weirdness and strange-ass arpeggiating wonderfulness stylings, and, yes, the “That’s Life” theme too..

Thug – Werdan {mtk025}

Artist: Thug
Title:
Werdan
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk025
Release Date:
2000/05/23

Another welcome release from Australia’s Tim Koch, and this particular track, once composed under the Tsunami Brothers moniker, mixes weirdly compelling rolling beats with quick changes of pace and high falutin’, radio-tuning-spattered synths.

As mentioned previously, Thug’s “Isolated Rhythm Chock” album on Aural Industries is a big hit with melodic idm fans all over the place, and his previous releases on Monotonik as Thug and Serkul have been pretty popular, too. More of his work soon, we promise..

Elektroblef – Md Showcase {mtkdj04}

Artist: Elektroblef
Title:
Md Showcase
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtkdj04
Release Date:
2000/05/17

Another dj-set from our Slovenian friends at Elektroblef, this hour-long mix mainly showcases Monotonik friend and affiliate md (once mellow-d), who was due to release his “Between Gaps” album on Monotonik as our first CD release.

It now looks like we’ll be sticking to the Internet-only thang, so we may release that album as mp3-only, or md may do something else spooky with it. In the meantime, the first released track from it, “Fres Core”, is available on the Merck records compilation “Squadron” (try http://www.m3rck.net/squadron for info/realaudio – the compilation also features many other Monotonik-related people such as Lackluster, Frank Bolero, and Bauri.)

Md will also be CD-re-releasing his classic FM/Monotonik mp3 album “Appelsap” on Merck Records soon. But in the meantime try this great mix of his older material, both from that album and elsewhere..

[Interestingly, the whole mix is bookended by fellow Five Musicians member Hunz, who collaborated with h0l right back in 1991 on synth-pop atrocities but now has a proper record deal for his NIN-ish semi-electronica.. ah, the hindsight!]

the tracklisting for “Md Showcase” is as follows:

. on me > hunz
. cxib > md
. headroom > md
. laivurinkatu 6 > md
. te.2r > md
. xilo > md
. ibo:ng > md
. trem muls > md

Pretty Boy Crossover – Oranje Bloom {mtk024}

Artist: Pretty Boy Crossover
Title:
Oranje Bloom
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk024
Release Date:
2000/05/17

Due to our Thug-ish connections, Monotonik seems to be specialising in fragile idm from the cream of the new talent coming out of Australia right now.

So here’s another label debut, from Pretty Boy Crossover (PBXO for short, but they prefer it long and ambiguous, and don’t you forget it..) They’re a duo who’ve been around for a few years now, developing their gently individual sound all the while, and recently signed to Skam, home of.. well, a whole buncha famous people (Gescom, Bola, etc.)

PBXO have a 12″ and album due out on Skam this summer, apparently. But rest assured, you won’t be paying 300 bucks for this mp3 on Ebay, a la ‘Lego Feet’, cos, umm, it’s free. Thanks again to the PBXO guys for allowing Monotonik to put this out, and remember – buy their material when it comes out, support Monotonik artists doing the real-world thing.

Incidentally, try Pretty Boy Crossover’s webpage at: http://pleasurecraft.va.com.au/pbxo/index.html for more info and party favors.

The Monotonik mix-terror continues with German musician, DJ, and collaborator sys(2074), maintainer of the Corewatch Conspiracy, and boy, what a cute lil near-75-minute mix he’s concocted for us Earth aliens.

Not purely content with tricking around with Drexciya, Techno Animal and Alec Empire, sys(2074) throws his own little interludes and even Vektrex on a Monotonik tip into the whole caboodle. Highly recommended on the dark-ish intriguing-ish tip.

Hoffman – Dark Fool {mtw017}

Artist: Hoffman
Title:
Dark Fool
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw017
Release Date:
2000/05/07

Showing that he can still put out rolling breakbeats with the best of them, this Hoffman release showcases the kind of marvellous funky breaks that led De:Bug magazine in Germany to call us ‘the Ninja Tune of the Net’.

Mind you, this time round, ‘Dark Fool’ is somewhere between BT-esque progressive breakbeat, harder techno, and Incredible Bongo Band-style freestyling. Definitions are always on the tricky side, but rest assured you’ve got a treat in for you.

Subi – Mnotomo’Vo’Non {mrv001}

Artist: Subi
Title:
Mnotomo’Vo’Non
Label:
 monoRAVEik
Catalog #:
mrv001
Release Date:
2000/05/02

It may not surprise you to know that Mono and associated labels continues to cherish Subi. As mentioned before, if we were John Peel, he’d be The Fall, and now he even gets his own custom sublabel for this, his first all-new single in a year or two, preceding his forthcoming _blockbuster_ bestof mp3 album, “The Rave-O-Lution Will Be Terrorised – The Best Of Subi 1989-2000” 🙂

He’s English, he makes videogames for a living, he still honestly believes it’s 1990, and “Mnotmo’Vo’Non” (decode it at your peril) is a horribly addictive breakbeat call to all those who still think The Prodigy should stick to the matching green+white checked outfits and that Urban Hype should forever stay at No.1 with “A Trip To Trumpton”.

Super Science – We’re Like Air, Everywhere At Once {mtk023}

Artist: Super Science
Title:
We’re Like Air, Everywhere At Once
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk023
Release Date:
2000/05/02

Another debut on Monotonik, and this wonderful multi-layered idm-ish vocal-scattered track is by another of the new skool of Australian electronic talent, Super Science. Famous idm labels have been showing interest in this particular man, and I think we can see why from this busily static-flecked, almost robotically beautiful piece.

You can find out more info about Super Science, the artist himself, by surfing to his website at http://www.superscience.net – and watch out for his forthcoming album, ‘love like life in miniature’, on Surgery Records out of Oz. Hopefully we’ll be featuring some more of his tunes soon – stay tuned, Monofans.
