The long-awaited mixes from the number one scene luddite are finally HERE!
Yes, the first of Subi’s retro DJ sets is upon us. We hope you like.

The general idea is to do a few of these, grouping by type. This time around we’re concentrating on the proto-hardcore European brutalism sound that started when Joey Beltram came up with “Mentasm” and T99 turned its famous stab into an unholy racket on “Anastasia”.

So, not quite into the classic period yet, but certainly getting there.
Wait for the next one! 😉

Shades of Rhythm – Extacy
SL2 – DJs Take Control
2 Bad Mice – Bombscare
Prodigy – What Evil Lurks
Cubik 22 – Night in Motion
Bizarre Inc – Playing With Knives (Quadrant mix)
Digital Excitation – Pure Pleasure (Rave mix)
Altern 8 – Frequency
Human Resource – Dominator
Isotonik – Different Strokes

…bloody hell, what were we drinking last night? Agh. Er. Anyway. It was Subi’s birthday yesterday, he is now 365 days from Last Day, and we had a bit of bash over here in monoRAVEik city. Such a bacchanalian assemblage of best bitter and sexual deviancy has not been seen since the days of George IV. And in honour of this august occasion, and because we’re all to drunk to track, we’re finally releasing the tune Subi did at the Ars Electronica Electrolobby in 2000 (see here for more info). Only two years late. 😉

“Tryptuaars” is a magpie-induced D&B monster which Subi wrote over the week in Austria inbetween being interviewed by Kim Danders, the host of Electrolobby and very nice man who unwittingly supplied the vocals for this track (taken from the first interview). The “no” was originally supposed to have been a composite of all the people on #tpolm sampling themselves saying it and emailing it to Subi, but he forgot to ask them in time. The rest of the samples are culled from various free sample sites, and a few of Subi’s previous tracks. All this was to prove how the concept of open-source music (the point of Subi and Distance’s presence at Electrolobby) worked. In the interests of open-source music, we are also making the tune available in its original .XM format.

The title is not an excruciating pun on “A Trip to Mars”, but a reference to the Crystal-Silents-Anarchy party held in Aars about ten years ago, as the demoscene was also on display as an example of proto net-culture. “A Trip to Aars” was the subtitle of the post-party demo from Melon Dezign, so it’s their excruciating pun.

The cover shows one of the few bad points about Electrolobby, the chairs. Yep, you were actually supposed to sit for eight hours a day on a wheeled Spacehopper. According to h0l they were still being used in 2001 when he went. Backache all round. Mind you, they made good footballs.

Subi – Trying 2 B Hardcore {mrv005}

Artist: Subi
Title:
Trying 2 B Hardcore
Label:
 monoRAVEik
Catalog #:
mrv005
Release Date:
2001/12/19

Quite frankly, there is only one person who could possibly open the proceedings of monoRAVEik as a self-propelled entity, and that is the old fart himself. Subi brings it back after nearly a year (was it?) away from the tracker with the nearly understandable title “Trying 2 B Hardcore”.

If anyone thought that the cheesemix of “Serendipity City” was representative of Subi’s new direction, they are proved wrong by this jet-propelled slice of D&B&Rock&Roll. What new direction? 😉 Heavy on the distortion and the dynamics, and featuring vocals unwittingly provided by Christina Aguilera and Messrs Highpitch and Lowpitch, this one will have you whistling yet another of those irritating lead-lines for weeks. And quite possibly permanently damage your stereo.

He’s finally got total control of monoRAVEik. Do we hear the words “monkey” and “banana plantation” being uttered? Well… we _are_ talking about the man who used to do thrash metal covers of Kylie Minogue songs. No, really.

Release Date:

That irrepressibly, uhh, irrepressible Subi returns with a new release on his very own monoRAVEik sublabel, and this time it’s a 21st century remake of an almost decade-old track of his, “Serendipity City”.

Whilst the original stayed very .MOD-ish and staccato, this remix smooths out to funky oldskoolinflected drum-roll breaks and an almost progressive breakbeat feel. Could it be that, finally, Subi is coming back in fashion? This track wouldn’t feel out of place in a nu-skool breaks or trance set.

But let’s put that unlikely idea at the back of our mind, and concentrate on bobbing ones head along to the snare-rush heaven created, albeit temporarily, in our headphones.

(And, yes, someone other than Subi is planned to release on monoRAVEik soon.. crazy tho it may seem.)

Release Date:
2000/06/04

A long time in the making and finally here (thanks to the contributors for their patience!), this EP gathers together 8 different re-interpretations of one of the greatest videogame soundtracks ever, from arguably the greatest game ever, Shigeru Miyamoto’s 1991 SNES classic “Super Mario World”.

Koji Kondo’s sublime original score has been subverted by a number of idm-listers and Monotonik collaborators, and the results, we’re sure you’ll agree, are interesting, to say the least. From Veer Nales’ spookily subversive glitchy take on Mario’s underwater themes, to a beautifully widescreen Xllv remix, all the way to Subi’s typically, uhh, different remix of the theme itself, we hope the plumber thinks we did him proud. and that, umm, he won’t sue 🙂

As promised, and as most of you have been dreading/looking forward to, the Subi best-of retrospective has finally arrived.

Throughout his 11 years making music in the Amiga ‘demo-scene’ and outside, Sam Brown, aka Subi, and formerly known as Subculture, has always shown originality and a doggedness that’s characterised his excellent output. The typical Subi release blends cheeky samples, breakbeats, and rampant catchiness to produce something that’s pretty much unlike most of the other music out there – and that can only be good.

A veteran fan of the oldskool hardcore/ravescene, Subi, who works as a computer game developer in Manchester, England, has been producing his odes to classic rave/breakbeat with the help of his guitar and battered analog synths, but almost always working on his trusty 4-channel Amiga computer, which is what every single one of these tunes are composed on, amazingly.

So, rejoice in the classic oldskool breakbeat blends, and watch as “The Rave-O-Lution Has Been Terrorised” wends its way through twisted Spice Girls homages and student catastrophe-sampling hardcore tunes as Subi, well, does as only Subi can do 🙂

Subi – Mnotomo’Vo’Non {mrv001}

Artist: Subi
Title:
Mnotomo’Vo’Non
Label:
 monoRAVEik
Catalog #:
mrv001
Release Date:
2000/05/02

It may not surprise you to know that Mono and associated labels continues to cherish Subi. As mentioned before, if we were John Peel, he’d be The Fall, and now he even gets his own custom sublabel for this, his first all-new single in a year or two, preceding his forthcoming _blockbuster_ bestof mp3 album, “The Rave-O-Lution Will Be Terrorised – The Best Of Subi 1989-2000” 🙂

He’s English, he makes videogames for a living, he still honestly believes it’s 1990, and “Mnotmo’Vo’Non” (decode it at your peril) is a horribly addictive breakbeat call to all those who still think The Prodigy should stick to the matching green+white checked outfits and that Urban Hype should forever stay at No.1 with “A Trip To Trumpton”.

[thanks to Hotwire@NinjaGirl for cover-image – m_end.jpg]

This is the end, my friend. mono211 and monotonik will continue to put out the best mp3s, CDs and so on, but MODs on mono211+tonik end here, right now. You wouldn’t want us fading away, would you? Better to burn out with this final compilation. It’s been over 3 years and getting on for 200 releases on both labels, so the title – pretty suitable, we guess?

h0l and the rest of the mono211/monotonik crew would like to extend their thanks to everyone who ever released MODs via mono or mono211 or monotonik, those who helped us with distribution and webspace, supported us with emails, kind words, and encouragement, and those who listened to and enjoyed our tunes. There’s plenty of MOD groups around, but we’d like to think we have a special place in your hearts as one of the groups who did things a little differently.

Enough. Keep on checking http://www.mono211.com, and keep it fresh. The best, we’ve been assured, is yet to come.

If you listen closely, it just makes so much _sense_. castlemortonravekid Subi, fresh from sorting us the new version of da m211 screensaver, blasts us another of his telegrams from A500 space, and it’s so.. him. Where else could you get that authentic 1991 flava and the mechtinnytech snarerush that signifies the start of another blastin’ subi tune? nowhere else, that’s where. when i compared m211’s fascination with subi to john peel’s fascination with the fall, subi got a bit upset… but do you know where we’re coming from? 🙂 oh, watch the accompanying .jpg for some present and relevant art from subi too. good man, that.

Ohno, we’ll never stop releasing the Subi sound, purely because.. oh, heck, we’re much too fond of the old coot. He beavers away up in his attic creating weird sorta retro but appealing horribly lo-fi harsh little tunes, and we can’t help but put them out. There’s also an appealing half-manga little doodle from Subi himself we’ve included as some kind of album cover manque. Aww, isn’t he sweet? 🙂
