Jonatan Bäckelie’s “Bulentoi” (under alias Lime) goes by the same paths as his earlier Milk-single “The Bulentoi” he made as Bulentoi (confused huh?). This is again minimal intelligent electronica. The tracks is built up by a nice rhodes/electric piano melody with lots of different background instruments to fill the audio spectrum. The drum loop is again quite minimal with not much happening but enough to keep the listener interested. This is good and melodic easy-listening iem.

Face On/Take One
Label:

Catalog #:

Release Date:
2000/06/17

This is a funky fusion of wicked electronic jungle beats and 70’s disco. This tune has both a great melody and tricky playing with drum beats. “Face On/Take One” starts with a nice filtered bass line. Then a Squarepusher influenced drum beat with lots of variation joins with different layers of melodic parts made with strings, electric guitar and background vocals. This is a good quality tune that will be loved by fans of earlier music of Mr. Tom Jenkinson.

Release Date:

Daggia is a preview track of Texas’ Arabai EP to be released at Roger That fan site. It is a strange mix of noises and random melodies. A heavy arabic influence can be heard on this crazy tune (as on the whole EP) in the form of random melodies not played on the 12-note scale. Also the wicked tabla rhythm gives a nice edge to this tune.

** Released earlier as “Gaylab (Tilt Goddess)” on Gaylab CD
*** Released earlier as 1/4 on ep1 by [unknown artist]

Amon’s Droids Killed My Audio is an over 40 minutes long ep. Droids Killed My Audio’s music switches between genres of dark ambient and noise terror. Most of the tracks are mainly dark ambient with occasional noise bursts and short minimal melodies. The r ich sound world of synthetic effects, sub bass lines or flute melodies form an interesting collage of sounds. That’s the best word to describe this ep: a sound collage.
The first three parts (Droids Killed My Audio, Revive and Kiro) and the 8th part (Divinator) are maybe the most easy to listen to tracks though the occasional clipping bursts really can make you wonder what the hell is going on. The rest of th e ep is something most of people won’t understand but will be a heaven to those who like noisy stuff and especially noise made by intelligent usage of the technology available.
The 4th, 5th and 6th part (Tilt Goddes, Evil and Shaquan) are probably the weirdest tunes here with fast altering of effect parameters and heavy filtering combined with heavy distortion. The 7th part (Droid-Comm) links the noise of Shaquan (dk maudio6) to the smooth floating ambient of Divinator (dkmaudio8).
The best bits on this ep are the 1st, 3rd and 9th tracks. They all have a certain identity that differs them from the rest of this ep. They all are crafted very well and the layers are combined so that they can be thought as whole entities. I would say these three tracks give you the best image of this ep.

the first 20 seconds made me think that this is again some random-generated bleeps, without any logic, for me, atleast. but this is something different. pin-point -sharp bleeps and eerie background. fastlychanging rhythm and high frequencies. something very different from the usual style of s.louhela, i’d say. hope that vetac cd2 is going to be the same quality as this is.

H.Kyllönen – Personal Gain Vol.1 (Promo) {ep/lp release #14}

Personal Gain Vol.1 (Promo)

Catalog #:
ep/lp release #14
Release Date:
2000/04/20

H.Kyllönen’s milk-promo for Personal Gain Vol.1 contains 2 tracks from the original 7 track ep. Henkka goes back to the noisy and distorted sound world of no Xivic CD1 with tracks Lika and Little Sister 2. Althought these tracks sound very much like the nxCD1 tracks they have a cleaner, crispier and a bit punchier sound.
Both Lika and Little Sister 2 are fast tunes with the distorted hard core idm beat playing the main role. The drum beats are effected with filtering and heavy altering of EQ settings. Lika has probably a bit more variation in the sound selection with telephone speech samples (distorted, of course) and different kinds of effects (the reverbed machine ambience at the end completes the track perfectly). Little Sister 2 has a more recognizeable melody (as Lika’s melody is in the background as a distorted bass line) but the sound world is a bit poor and there’s not much of happening.
If you like fast intelligent hard core then you should get this.

1. 1/4 [4:16]

“pretty much the same random-generated crap”, would some conservative fellow say. i agree partially; this sounds a bit like random-generated noise. but there’s somekind of melody near the start. later on there’s those head-fucking noises, which will make you sick, if you are high-strung. maybe this track is a bit of change to those old binary-noise -tracks. this track is quite difficult to review, listen it by yourself, and decide.

[80%]

2. 2/4 [0:58]

wow, there’s even notable melodies now. the first three seconds at start sound like they’re taken from some pseudo-ambient collection. this tracks sounds a bit eerie at times, funnily enough i don’t know why. nice hi-frequency clips are dropped in in the start. but the end is a bit weaker than the start, because it’s a bit too much to the random-generated music. pretty nice, although short.

[82%]

3. 3/4 [1:08]

incredible head-fucking noise starts this track. then a bit distorted bassdrum joins the game, sounding like some binary-gabber/hardcore a while.:) but the end is even more incredible, it’s like from some c64- tape played in normal cassette-deck. maybe even a bit more fucked up. whoever created this knows how to distort and alter the sound into new random-sounding -cacophony.

[81%]

4. 4/4 [10:27]

ultraviolet ambient, i thought when i heard this track the first time. nice hi-freq strings and bizarre sound effects are present the whole running time. this is not the normal chill-out, harmonical ambient, with soothing strings, etc. perhaps i would call this autechre-ish ambient (no offense). the soundscape is filled with effects, which sound like an edited beat, can’t be sure. but the one thing is for sure, if you like raw, modern ambient, get this.

Bulentoi – The Bulentoi {rel#77}

Artist: Bulentoi
Title:
 The Bulentoi
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
rel#77
Release Date:
2000/03/14

“The Bulentoi” is a minimal electric/ambient tune consisting mainly of a minimal drum beat and a simple but beautiful melody played with a slightly filtered and reverbed sine-like sound. Even a nice pad sound is present at one point. The drums aren’t very complicated – just a simple repetitive bass/snare combination with occasional hihats and zaps. I think the drums couldn’t be much better. The melody couldn’t be much better either. This track is a professionally crafted tune and has a very nice overall sound. This is a welcome change for people who are bored with fast idm beats and prefer more melodic music and a little less of everything for a change.

Artist: H.Kyllönen
Title:
fourfour
Label:

Release Date:
2000/02/16

The track starts with a sound of someone walking along with speech samples of K.Ylikulju. Then a depressing feedback noise which lasts for the rest of the tune joins in to the background making you expect something… something hard maybe? Well, you get it. A very aggressive bassline/bassdrum sequence with hard compression and modulation/filter combination gets rolling on. The rest of the track is based on this sequence which never repeats the same, the occasional pauses are filled with more speech. This is a very aggressive and depressing tune which could do with more instruments and variation though (like some additional drum sequences or another more melodic bassline?) but you get a hiquality hard iem tune that won’t leave you cold. You might need some ear protection though.

01 – nalok (introductal) [4:43]

pretty nice intro, string, speech & the usual stuff, you could say. in some parts the strings are too ‘heavy’, i mean they are too high volume. the middle part is echoed voices and sweeped strings, going all the way to the end. for my taste, this track is a little bit too monotonous, i mean it uses all the effects & tricks introduced on millions of other ambient tracks. but don’t get me wrong, this track is not bad.

[80%]

02 – uiku natural [7:05]

strings and pretty bizarre-sounding effects start this track. sweeping strings sound nice, but they are too much in background and the effects are too much in foreground, in my opinion. the theme is same, through the whole track, there are just small variations, as far as i can notice. without the bizarre effects this track would be the best in the ep.

[84%]

03 – phlow [5:03]

nice, uptone strings start this track with a bit fuzzy -sounding effect in background. pretty good, perhaps too monotonous comp comes in, merged with nice strings. the track continues with bassline and a bit too sharp melody. nice track, the comp, although it’s repetitive, gives a nice edge to this track.

[84%]

04 – phlow (end) [7:35]

this track starts with reverbing sound, which soon transforms into semi-majestetic strings. the melody is nice, except some looping problems disturb the harmony. the melody changes it’s mood for a while; it sound quite sad. but not for long; the original melody, with loud strings comes back, with beat this time. the beat is quite simple, but it still fits into the track. this is quite good track, except for too loud strings and few bad sounding loops.
