Unreleased Works Part 2 – The Firehorse Sessions

Release Date:
2001/11/14

As you may know by now, Andi Horvath, aka Ramone/Mono, passed away very unexpectedly and prematurely in June of 2001. He was a source of the most amazing hiphop jungle tracks and ascii/graffiti art, as well as possessing an amazing spirit, and he’s fondly remembered by all of his online and offline friends.

So, we’re proud to be able to present the second part of our tribute to him, a full CD album he recorded back in 1998, originally for a release on German-based Firehorse Records, though this didn’t end up panning out. Thus, “The Firehorse Sessions” languished in the vaults until now, when his friends back in Germany were kind enough to pass us on a copy for release online as mp3s – they will also be releasing it on limited CD, as originally intended, in further tribute to Andi.

What to say about the music? Well, it’s the .MOD/.XM Ramone style writ large on a larger canvas, stripped down to the bone, and it sounds amazing for it. All the way from the terse loops of “Intro”, through the two-step funk of “Weapon Assassinator”, to the radio cut-up (featuring Mono .MOD releases in the radio mix, *sigh*), right up to the pure class of “Til We Come” and crazed multi-layering of “Number One”, this record oozes class, and epitomises the breaks-heavy sound Ramone and Mono was renowned for and Mono211 is still pushing in yr area. So burn this on a disc, put it in yr car CD player, and, well, shake yr booty, darnit.

Unreleased Works Part 1 – The Fistful Of Dojo And SuperSIDekick Sessions

Release Date:

After the unexpected and tragic loss of Andi Horvath, aka Ramone/Mono, of a sudden heart failure in June (tribute page here), we at Monotonik+friends were contacted by his friends at Fruitz Of Dojo (the Mac demo-scene group he was a member of) with a number of great unreleased Ramone .XM tracks which had been composed, in the months before he passed away, for both a demo (‘Fistful Of Dojo’) and a ‘chip’ music-disc (‘SuperSIDekick Sessions’).

So, we’re proud to present these 16 unreleased .XM tracks, totalling 1.3meg in .ZIP form, as the first part of Andi’s musical legacy (the second, upcoming installment is his unreleased 1998 full-length album, originally done for Germany’s Firehorse Records.)

The release is divided into two parts, with the 3 tracks for the ‘Fistful Of Dojo’ demo (preview screenshots here and here) encompassing intense funk through super-hard shaolin hiphopjungle action, and the remaining chip-tunes from the ‘SuperSIDekick Sessions’ (preview screenshots here, here and here) doing wonderful chipped-up funky action with electro-hiphop influences, all in under 30k per track. It’s spectacularly vibrant stuff, and makes us all happy and kinda melancholy at the same time – when all is said and done, your music rocks, and always will, Andi.

[thanks to Hotwire@NinjaGirl for cover-image – m_end.jpg]

This is the end, my friend. mono211 and monotonik will continue to put out the best mp3s, CDs and so on, but MODs on mono211+tonik end here, right now. You wouldn’t want us fading away, would you? Better to burn out with this final compilation. It’s been over 3 years and getting on for 200 releases on both labels, so the title – pretty suitable, we guess?

h0l and the rest of the mono211/monotonik crew would like to extend their thanks to everyone who ever released MODs via mono or mono211 or monotonik, those who helped us with distribution and webspace, supported us with emails, kind words, and encouragement, and those who listened to and enjoyed our tunes. There’s plenty of MOD groups around, but we’d like to think we have a special place in your hearts as one of the groups who did things a little differently.

Enough. Keep on checking http://www.mono211.com, and keep it fresh. The best, we’ve been assured, is yet to come.

Catalog #:

Release Date:

The ever horizontal Ramone provides us with a remix highlight thanks to his careful reconstruction of the Relief+Twilight track from a while back. He seems to have melded the track into a sorta tripped-out odyssey, complete with slowed-down drawling hiphop samples and funky acoustic bass and drums. You got it? You know I got soul! Mm, just sit down and appreciate the atmosphere, please, memsahib? This is top class entertainment, we fear…

We return with a beautifully produced track from Ramone and his German studio partner, Trigger (who has recently been responsible for remixing Jeru Tha Damaja’s “Ya Playing Yaself” for DMC Records, amongst other things.) This time it’s a chill-out track that was briefly considered for the credits music on the Playstation title Mono211 have done the soundtrack for.

But thankfully for you guys, it’s now a m211 mp3 release, and you get to hear the distinctive blunted Ramone style given a smooth makeover. What do you say, somewhere between Sun Electric and dubbed-up Orb with a distinctive mono211 breakbeat edge? Nice echo-mashed vocal touches, too.

It’s tricky. In some danger of becoming the Penn and Teller of the underground scene – now you see him, now you don’t? With the undercurrents of the macabre but the straightahead gobsmacking in there too, it’s a valid comparison, but, let’s face it, Bay Tremore just ain’t that.. sick. Although perhaps some of his basslines are a little.. evil 🙂 Anyhow, in the latest instalment he takes on some of the recent mono211 releases from ramone and substance, gives them a good seeing-to, and dumps them in the gutter, bloodied but somehow a whole lot tougher. c-c-call the c-c-ops. 🙂

Again, some deck-clearing, with some excellent instrumental hiphop given to us by Ramone earlier this year, and finally released now. The slight delay in releasing has, if anything, matured this year’s vintage, and it’s still a mighty fine double-tracker.

A return for Ramone, and it’s just as blunted as usual. Mm, in our opinions, rather wonderful – but then, what do we know, huh? 🙂 Perhaps original because it’s not afraid to be a bit more downtempo than your conventional hiphop-jungle-hybrid. Then again, it could be the schmokes that make us choke. We’ll just slope off then 🙂

Let’s go back, let’s go back to school, let’s go back to school, to the oldskool 😉 Ramone shows his mastery of the hiphop jam again, and there’s dancing on the streets – some serious electric boogaloo action goes down, hah heh hah. Can anyone spell ‘worryingly funky’? Mono iz three feet high.. and rising.
