Dice, aka Prob. – Skyline Remix {mtw030}

Artist: Dice, aka Prob.
Title:
Skyline Remix
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw030
Release Date:
2003/01/21

We’re delighted to welcome back one of the former d+b kings of Mono back in the .MOD days, Jani ‘Dice/Prob.’ Niiranen, with this amazingly smooth remix of his 1998 .MOD release, ‘Skyline’ – a wickedly good re-tooling of a track from wayback.

Nowadays, Dice has released tracks on labels like Straight Up Breakbeat, Moving Shadow, and his own Mangofunk Records, with forthcoming releases – solo on Defunked, and alongside a long-awaited Peshay remix on Mangofunk. He also plays out regularly in Finland and Estonia – plus, watch out for his Soulfuel Sessions on net.radio station monofunk.net alongside DJ Pinball.

So, what is there to say about the “Skyline Remix” that can’t be cleaned from sailing through the warm, inviting seas of the track itself? For those who remember the original, this mix-up takes the essential melodies and layers vocals and some gorgeous new mixed-up breaks over the top of it, ending up with the sunny, intelligent melodic breaks sound that Mono211, when raised from dormancy like this, delights in providing you all. Enjoy the starshine.

Prob. – Emotion EP {mtk042}

Artist: Prob.
Title:
Emotion EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:

Release Date:
2000/11/24

After a longish period of hibernation, Dice, aka Prob., the Finnish breaks-guru who’s a longtime Dharma collaborator and has previous and forthcoming 12″ releases on Audio Couture, Straight Up Breakbeat and Formation, comes up with a gem of a mini-EP for Monotonik in his more laidback Prob. guise.

First up is the title track, “Emotion”, a wonderfully horizontally-inclined d+b-flecked track, reminiscent of some of the output on Certificate 18, perhaps – all insistent snares and pirouetting bass, but with an overlying melodic structure that’s simply creamy.

Twin that with the remix of Prob+Mirko’s “Body Rock” track, the original of which has already been requisitioned for a public-access interpretative dance TV show, “Praise You”-style, we kid you not, and we think you’ll find the perfect duo. The “Body Rock – Remix” is almost Kernkraft-catchy in a ‘only slightly less cheesy DMX Krew’ stylee, and overhauls the original into a more complete piece of electro madness, if that’s possible. And check the irresistable whitneyhoustonesque keychange for the last verse? Scoore..

Body Rock

Mono211
Catalog #:

Release Date:

Much more of a ‘fun’ release than anything else, this great piece of electro from Helsinki guys Prob+Mirko was meant to compete in the mp3 competition at Assembly 99, the hackerdemo party held a couple of weeks back. But in the end it was encoded at the wrong rate and got disqualified, so we get the benefit of the damn catchy vocoded lyrics and oldskool robotikvoices (yes, it’s all their own work, not samples..) for the first time on m211.

‘We are here to make you move, so come on people – rock the groove!’

[thanks to Hotwire@NinjaGirl for cover-image – m_end.jpg]

This is the end, my friend. mono211 and monotonik will continue to put out the best mp3s, CDs and so on, but MODs on mono211+tonik end here, right now. You wouldn’t want us fading away, would you? Better to burn out with this final compilation. It’s been over 3 years and getting on for 200 releases on both labels, so the title – pretty suitable, we guess?

h0l and the rest of the mono211/monotonik crew would like to extend their thanks to everyone who ever released MODs via mono or mono211 or monotonik, those who helped us with distribution and webspace, supported us with emails, kind words, and encouragement, and those who listened to and enjoyed our tunes. There’s plenty of MOD groups around, but we’d like to think we have a special place in your hearts as one of the groups who did things a little differently.

Enough. Keep on checking http://www.mono211.com, and keep it fresh. The best, we’ve been assured, is yet to come.

Whoaa. Prob. steps up to bat with this viciously chaotic slab of noise, kicking and punching its way to an early grave. But fortunately, it stops just short and reels furiously into the ambient abyss for the last part of the track, where it stays suspended in limbo, as ineffectual as a little kitty with filed-down claws.

Just feel real. Mono211 kicks back into the realm of the seriously chilled for this beguiling piece of ambient, with the faintest of triphop breaks in it, courtesy of Finnish junglist Prob.

Mm, the beautifully serene chords mixed with just the dreamiest acoustic break put this somewhere around the most ethereal end of Global Communication, with further nods to Pete Namlook and Dr.Motte on a less electronic tip. As Mixmaster Morris might ask, is it tomorrow already?

Release Date:

More rewording and reordering as Substance takes elements from two previous releases (Tek’s mp3 “Benedict” and Prob+Ebb’s “Stylez”) and merges and melds to come up with this mellifluous hybrid. It’s fun to play with sounds, isn’t it? Watch out for a simultaneous/near-simultaneous Malik remix of “Stylez” on Theralite (http://pigforce.warande.net/theralite), incidentally.. mmm, synchronicity can be so constructive, hm?

This one has been waiting in the wings for a very long time – apologies to Prob and Ebb for delaying it. But finally a release for the superlative “Stylez EP” by one of mono211’s foremost Finns and his studio partner, Ebb. There’s actually very little that can be said about this apart from the fact that damn, it’s a classy hiphopjam, and the bonustrack is original and smartstyled too. Oh, please note that real scratching and real sativa extract was used in the making of this track, and readers – don’t try it at home, bwoooyeee 😉 Honey, I got rhythm!
