Tao – Grand Hotel EP {od039}

Artist: Tao
Title:
Grand Hotel EP
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od039
Release Date:
2002/02/20

i’ve been hearing goood voices around this french dude tao after his amazing EPs on ogredung, and have been being asked several times about other releases from him.
well as always we try to satisfy our audience so here is what u requested, in a new _even_ more intellectual beauty-face.
this ep recalls in a certain way some previous airs; it begins with ‘expand’, a short cemeterial ambientish piece, deep and profound in its simplicity, where we can figure out in the obscurity blue ‘fate-fires’. with lobby, undefined voices introduce our memoirs into a palyndromous path (as the release date should say heh), and we can clearly feel influences and returns to the first subtle tracks. whistleable melodies, dressed with sub-drums and mech-chords as a soundtrack for our passage of the waxed corridor. the final track is certainly the climax accomplished; between crakies and reverbs, a tingled melody shows its face and multiplies with distant melancholy, to express a lament we can’t help hearing and quiver with it.
sir tao makes us all guests of his thrilled hotel; we hope to enjoy our stay, his shudderness! :))

DJ Ninjamachine – Relentlessly Upfull {mrv007}

Artist: DJ Ninjamachine
Title:
Relentlessly Upfull
Label:
 monoRAVEik
Catalog #:
mrv007
Release Date:
2002/02/14

And this is where Monotonik and monoRAVEik really part company. Cosmopolitan he may be, but we just can’t see h0l seeing this one as the right style for the IDM-ness that our beloved parent specialises in these days. Ladies and gentlemen, leave your brain at the door and grab a bottle of water. It’s raving time!

“Relentlessly Upfull” is just that. One hundred percent happy happy happy. Piano-riffs and synth-stabs ago-go with a few helium vocals and a diva (Penny Ford in this case) belting out the meaningless powerballad speak in the background. Ninj is a man living on an almost permanent endorphin high.

This is the type of music you don’t need drugs for. In fact, if you find yourself taking drugs to enjoy music, may we suggest you at least consider the possibility of trying another type of music? 😉

Idmonster – Low Flying Planes {mtk072}

Artist: Idmonster
Title:
Low Flying Planes
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk072
Release Date:
2002/02/13

We’re delighted to present another release from the divine UK-er and ex-Butterfly Child dream-pop-ster, Pendle, in his cheeky Idmonster alias. With recent Idmonster material on real-world compilations from Neo-Ouija and Notype, people seem to really dig his smooth, truly serene style, which he puts to good use composing soundtracks for a diverse range of TV documentaries in the UK. And we treasure the ‘Monster too 🙂

His latest track, “Low Flying Planes”, is magisterially ethereal. It starts with what sounds like alien birdsong and percussive rain falling on distant worlds, and ends with faint, pure tones percolating through the mist and into our consciousness. Which is currently going ‘bip’, if you get our drift. And even if not, we’re sure you’ll appreciate Idmonster’s drift – this is almost reminiscent in tone of early pioneers like Talk Talk, but with a style all its own.

Oto – Time {od038}

Artist: Oto
Title:
 Time
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od038
Release Date:
2002/02/12

after a looong period of idleness our xperimental-ongakka oto brings some fresh house-ish experimentalism, for the first time on ogredung we guess.
maybe you could turn up your nose by hearing this but we are sure you’re gonna love this track as we already do. 😉
even if u’ll need more listenings (time, indeed) to fully enjoy this piece, you’ll be able to appreciate it as a grand chillin’ deep cocktail served with chords and tickings.
it doesn’t pretend to be extremely complex or whatelse, but we can’t look at this as a shortcoming; we’re just practisin our ears for subsonic melodies, and time needs its time. ;))

 Ogredung

the romanian chill duo astonishes our baka minds with a ray of crystal loveliness; portray of a reverie landscape, enfolding sunny spots of greenery, and giving the sensation of such a beautiful sound that u can never hear in earth.
crispy butterbeats and yea qrocant mellowness, all overgrowin with azure moss and flowers so sweet, and the senses faint picturing them; while far below water-blooms and melodic winds which wear the sapless foliage of this candid ocean, know the voice, and suddendly grow dusty-yellow with fear, and tremble and despoil themselves: oh, hear! 😎

Hotcakes – Eklektik House {‘011}

Artist: Hotcakes
Title:
Eklektik House
Label:
 Noiz Phaktah
Catalog #:
 ‘011
Release Date:
2002/02/04

Yes, those hardened, veteran, not oldschool but just plain old, listeners
among us will recognise this Ravebusters (www.ravebusters.de) remix of House Electric. It was a cool tune to begin with, all I did was make it louder ;]

Originally planned to be on my demo EP, it got cut for another piece that’s slightly lesser known as “The Best Tune in the World”, which will probably also feature on Noiz Phaktah later in the year…

Can’t hear it? Well try DeliTracker v2.32 or OctaMEDPlayer v7 on Amiga and WinAMP, DeliPlayer or the provided player (OctaMEDPlayer.exe) on Windows.

Luminfire – Bananadittydub {mtk071}

Artist: Luminfire
Title:
Bananadittydub
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk071
Release Date:
2002/02/04

Having previously churned up our oldskool .MOD treats into a swirly mix for us with his ‘Mono BPM’ set, and also ‘possibly’ behind some naughty bootleg Monotonik compilations floating around file-sharing servers worldwide, US-based Luminfire sent us this languidly individualistic original composition. It made us go ‘oo’. So we released it. Neat.

But more with the specifics, guv’nor? Well, “Bananadittydub” is a vibraphone-encrusted gem of a track which strangely recalls DJ Shadow in its deftly lyrical approach to sound layering. From the neato pitchbending plus echo of the intro, right through the piano lead cutting through the almost ethnic percussion and heavenly chords, it’s uncharacterisable in only the best way.

Darkhalo – Alloy {od036}

Artist: Darkhalo
Title:
Alloy
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
 od036
Release Date:
2002/01/26

continuing in that obscure mood we started with this cup of releases, this alloy definitely melts up in a mechanical environment emptiness and fullness at the same time.
big and blared kicks accompanied by distant piano loops together with full surrounding thunders leave space to more ethereal and airy pads; a broken, deep trip-hop piece is the result.
the artist seems to care about his well-known capability of mastering different music styles, and with this rel darkhalo builds a cathedral to abstractness.

Xlea – Rainy Afternoons {mtk070}

Artist: Xlea
Title:
Rainy Afternoons
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk070
Release Date:
2002/01/26

Calmness in the face of glitchversity is something that Monotonik prizes highly indeed. So when we had the opportunity to release this track from the UK’s Xela, who has an album forthcoming on the divine Neo-Ouija label, plus appearances on material from Musik Aus Strom and Merck.. well, we got straight on the case.

The reason “Rainy Afternoons” hits the spot for us is that Harold Budd-esque underlying serenity, but with a carefully cultivated veneer of layer upon layer of stuttering static, melody, speech and lovingly crafted detritus. It builds and peaks and troughs and never stops. And, like skipping radio frequencies over and over, the whole creation is much more than the sum of its carefully constructed parts. Hats off to the man who experienced that rainy afternoon.
