Idmonster – Preloved EP {mtk185}

Artist: Idmonster
Title:
Preloved EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk185
Release Date:
2007/06/17

After a long absence from Monotonik (his last release for us was back in 2002!), we’re delighted to welcome back UK-based musician Pendle Poucher, aka Idmonster, with a 3-track compilation of rather wonderfully varied electronic music, ‘Preloved EP’.

Nowadays, Poucher works as a documentary and TV series musician for a number of UK and Japanese shows, including “new Japanese Discovery Channel idents that i’m very proud of”, he tells us, as well as providing all of the audio for the BBC’s interactive history game CDX – and also somewhat oddly cowrote a ‘club smash’ with high-profile U.S. DJ Robbie Rivera. Hey, eclecticism is the root of all wonder!

Anyhow, the three tracks in this release successfully show off that eclecticism, with ‘Close Harness’ showcasing an almost Underworld or Fluke-ish groove in an understated, serene track, before ‘Charlie’s Orbit’ spirals off into abstract groove, with some pretty interesting loping percussion, before we finish out with the all out freak-out of ‘The Dog Under The Skin’, which shows off a heavy, intense feeling of dread – and we love it. Welcome back, Mr. Idmonster!

Idmonster Vs. Stina Nordenstam – Wittle Star {mtk082}

Artist: Idmonster Vs. Stina Nordenstam
Title:
Wittle Star
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk082
Release Date:
2002/07/10

The return of Brighton, UK-based composer, Idmonster, to Monotonik is always an auspicious event. Former member of Butterfly Child and now a TV documentary composer, his side projects under the Pendle and Idmonster monikers are nothing short of gorgeous.

In this case, Idmonster takes a single vocal line from Stina Nordenstam’s contribution to, of all things, the “Romeo And Juliet” soundtrack, and re-orchestrates a sublime idm-house trip over the top, complete with what sounds like a theramin solo, and all the mellowest, smartest keyboard and string arrangements you could ever hope to hear.

So, relax in the summer sunshine whilst you hear “Wittle Star” build and build, all EBTG-esque passion and longing, til it peaks, you stare directly into the sun, and lose your sight permanently – set the controls for the heart of your retina.

Or, like Hunter Thompson, don’t electrocute your friend at the climax of the track, just throw an unplugged electrical appliance in the bath without his knowledge, and get all the pleasure without the permanent physical disfigurement. You dig?

Idmonster – Low Flying Planes {mtk072}

Artist: Idmonster
Title:
Low Flying Planes
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk072
Release Date:
2002/02/13

We’re delighted to present another release from the divine UK-er and ex-Butterfly Child dream-pop-ster, Pendle, in his cheeky Idmonster alias. With recent Idmonster material on real-world compilations from Neo-Ouija and Notype, people seem to really dig his smooth, truly serene style, which he puts to good use composing soundtracks for a diverse range of TV documentaries in the UK. And we treasure the ‘Monster too 🙂

His latest track, “Low Flying Planes”, is magisterially ethereal. It starts with what sounds like alien birdsong and percussive rain falling on distant worlds, and ends with faint, pure tones percolating through the mist and into our consciousness. Which is currently going ‘bip’, if you get our drift. And even if not, we’re sure you’ll appreciate Idmonster’s drift – this is almost reminiscent in tone of early pioneers like Talk Talk, but with a style all its own.

Idmonster – My Human Side {mtk059}

Artist: Idmonster
Title:
My Human Side
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk059
Release Date:
2001/07/29

The second mtk.release (third release over both mtk and m211!) for UK-based Pendle, aka Idmonster, and his output seems to just keep getting better. After his previous Idmonster track we put out, ‘The Force May Be With You’, attracted attention from the verycool Neo-Ouija (Lee Metamatics/Norken’s label!), we’re pleased to note that track’ll be on the “Cottage Industries 2” compilation with Funckarma, Novel23, EU and more, wheeee.

Anyhow, “My Human Side” is Idmonster’s new track for us, and it’s another dense, lush, humansided piece of electronic listening music, with a curiously pulsing bassdrum leading into all manner of gorgeously fluctuating accompaniment, and finally to a sorta indecipherably vocoded lead-line whichrocks the track like Mr.Roboto stuck in a clockwork toy factory making lush stuffed fluffy clouds for  hanging out in limbo with flying monkey sheep. Or are we just stating the obvious?

Idmonster – The Force May Be With You {mtk051}

Artist: Idmonster
Title:
 The Force May Be With You
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk051
Release Date:
2001/04/15

After his first release as Pendle on our sister label, Mono211, the UK-based former Butterfly Child bandmember and now TV/film/advert soundtracker returns on Monotonik via his Idmonster pseudonym (id? idm? definitely monstrous!) And it’s not just a slight return, either.

“The Force May Be With You” is a truly divine track, starting in a sea of disembodied voice fragments and cosmic chord co-location, before adding layer on layer of pastoral strings, theremin (?), and jittering that percussive speech over and over, like instant transportation between thousands of conversations every second.

And sometimes it sounds a little like the most laidback air-raid siren in the world ever, cranking up. We like that.
