Transient – Whole Symesta EP {od064}

Artist: Transient
Title:
Whole Symesta EP
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od064
Release Date:
2004/02/04

After his remarkable appearance on the Cucina Vagabonda compilation, Transient gently steps again into the lovable world of sweeping synths and melodious rhythms ‘n arpeggios. Tough at parts, yet mellow and expansed, always fading in beauty; an exemplar taste of melodic idm, synth-pop flavoured and so much poetic. As if in a tale where little fairies cure ill mini-robots. One of the best releases of 2004 already.

Various Artists – Sound Of Subnatura EP {mtk125}

Artist: Various Artists
Title:
Sound Of Subnatura EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk125
Release Date:
2004/02/04

Since we’ve previously released sparkling retro bleeps from Sweden’s Goto80, it was a natural progression, much like 50 Cent and G-Unit, to expand our focus to encompass his whole posse, the Subnatura collective. Thus, we get ‘The Sound Of Subnatura’, a 5-artist, 5-track EP which shows off the varying style of the Subnatura artists and their ‘good vibrations’.

So, we start with the quirky electronic breaks of Dorothy’s Magic Bag, all contrite but strident on ‘Syltpuss’, before breaking into the odd, striking triphop uneasiness of Liquid Stranger’s ‘Onda Ogat’, and then hitting up some pure, sinewave-inflected calm with Goto80’s alter ego Extraboy, and ‘Botch Tuck’. Then we hit the difficult but rewarding obtuseness of Slem’s ‘Tansa Disko’, before the beautifully poised finale of Inkinen, and the truly awesome cosmic drift of ‘Sensual’. All in all, the EP has an odd sense of whole which shows why the Subnatura boys came together in the first place, and why Monotonik is proud to be showcasing their talents. Let’s join together and wish them a good trip sub natura ad infinitum.

Relative Q – Beauty and Her Broken Things {[one02]}

Artist: Relative Q
Title:
Beauty and Her Broken Things
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[one02]
Release Date:
2004/02/03

A familiar face from the staple Chill productions release group and our 101 compilation, we’re proud to have relative q drop his latest on us.

All the elements are here and well presented. The overall harmony strikes one with a rise in reflection and memory, pain and triumph, failure and success. A good example of electronic music’s instrumental replacement of the vocalist where melody and accentuations seemly influence memory and emotion more than mere words can… Creating a world and telling the story of the individual all at the same time.

Blasterhead – Killbots EP {mtk124}

Artist: Blasterhead
Title:
Killbots EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk124
Release Date:
2004/01/18

Having been beguiled by the retro bleep sensibilities of Japanese videogame composer Akihiro Ito, aka Blasterhead, ever since hearing some of his Nintendo GameBoy tracks via Osaka-based ‘chiptune’ meta-site Vorc.org, we hunted him down, and the results of this predatory action come in the form of the wonderful GameBoy-based rave bleep release you see before you, ‘Killbots EP’.

When he’s not sneaking off for some GameBoy rave action, Blasterhead is sometimes sneaking GB sounds into the soundtracks of the PC hentai dating games he provides music for, and is now providing music for (non-adult!) Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 versions of the (distinctly risque!) Kero-Q PC dating title Moekko Company (Moekan), about ‘an enigmatic man served unquestioningly by five beautiful maids with equally mysterious pasts.’

But we get the fruits of his Killbot spree, non-mysteriously and immediately, and the EP, originally released as a 500-copy limited-edition CD with the addition of a (non-included) live track, and largely composed with the homebrew Nintendo GameBoy music composition tool LittleSound DJ, starts with the almost robotic, percussively smart GameBoy romp of ‘Skyblue Monday’, before seguing into the sirens and pitch bends of the rave-like ‘Killbots’. The rest of the EP is similarly sparkling, with ‘We Are Here’ a particular highlight, all intelligent repetition and danceable retro beats.

01 – Skyblue Monday
02 – Killbots
03 – Harakiri Nation
04 – Route909
05 – We Are Here

Paranerd – Little Shames {[dot9.02]}

Title:
Little Shames
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[dot9.02]
Release Date:
2003/03/20
Re-Release Date:
2004/01/15

Paranerd (Pinkj) came out with ‘little shames’ in March 2003, a month after the demise of dot9, so to most of you already familiar with his music this re-release should be a treat.

Like the previous dot9 re-release, this is a continuous .ogg mix running just over 22 minutes. Although coming from a very familiar digital sound Paul brings a very organic feel to his music, which makes it feel unjustified or unfair to label it as low-fi, bit or chip-tune music. Constantly and quickly evolving from the simple elements it’s constructed with, ‘little shames’ rewards itself with multiple listens – each time revealing something pleasant and new.

Catalog #:

Release Date:
2004/01/15

Vizion’s attractive trademark is that he always got something lovely to talk about. The Ai EP follows his recent contribution on the Cucina Vagabonda compilation as an authentic whispered progress in the microcosmos of naive beauties, all immersed in a dense romantic noisy air and randomly touching, still pulsating softly and begging for a smile.

we’re re-releasing the first backtrack release, a chipdisk, with mp3s so that anyone can hear it, even if they don’t have windows OS or know what a module is! we hope that you will, however, investigate module and chipmusic, once you have a taste of this charming bleepy music. oh, don’t forget: if a song ends abruptly, it is probably meant to loop continuously until you get tired of it, so set your mp3 player accordingly.

backtrack’s first release was a chipdisk for a few reasons. mostly, we thought a huge chipdisk would be a cool way to start with a bang (or at least a few blips.) now, we wonder if we will ever even do another chipdisk. it was great fun, and there was a lot of talent on it.

nineteen artists were involved in the making of this thing, not counting the poor souls whose not-quite-fitting tunes were rejected. all this work adds up to 29 tunes and approximately 70.5 minutes of music for us.

please realize, though, we are not a chipgroup. a few of us enjoy making chiptunes, but some do not even know how.

many thanks to our wonderful guest-releasers! beautiful music, i must say. really, most of you guys and even the actual members (!) totally amaze me. i would never have imagined, i would be working with such talent so soon. thanks for letting me.

-valzi

respect to our friends and many thanks to those who have helped us get off the ground! metapathy, zinger, and vizion have been essential in making this, our grand opening, possible.

_KhlER3L – Gratis {[dot9.01]}

Artist: _KhlER3L
Title:
Gratis
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[dot9.01]
Release Date:
2002/12/02
Re-Release Date:
2004/01/04

Our first re-release from the dot9 backcatalogue. In traditional dot9 fashion its presented as a longplayer / mix (26 min). Gratis pulls you into a unique but familiar world.

Filled with hectic and sombre moments, you’ll easily get lost. It’d be shameful not to point out the excellent programming, but its enviroment also deserves first mention. Put your headphones on and spend the next 30 minutes with _KhlER3L.

This Gratis, my first mini-album, was originally released about December 10th, 2002. I’m happy to be one of the first releases on mutes ressurection of the dot9 vibe with his new offshoot, One.
The idea behind Gratis was to put together something different from the usual Buzz release. I had spent a couple weeks listening to full albums, from beginning to end, and figured the extended format might be something new to try. The Buzz scene is mostly about releasing individual tracks, or sequences of individual tracks. Gratis was created from tracks, old and new, spliced together to form a whole. It isn’t perfect, but I hope it’s interesting enough for you to check out.

All tracks were created in Buzz without outside postproduction, except a bit of arrangement and wave editing via Cool Edit. Some of the samples were heavily edited in external programs. If you haven’t tried Buzz yet, you should. It is an amazing peice of software that gets better every day.

I have compressed the audio using Ogg Vorbis because it is way better than MP3. The file you are about to download is less than 10 megs, for 26 minutes of music. That’s an incredible ratio. What’s more, the quality is decent at those rates. Audiophiles will disagree, but so what? I think it’s a breakthrough for the scene. Now we can release albums and afford to host them ourselves. So, get to it!

Jason aka _KhlER3L

I can’t believe I forgot to greet. Greetz: boymeranq, pinkj, cyan, mute, nool, setz, boo, Devs: Jeskola (+++), SurfSmurf (matilde!), Geonik (++), Zephod (voidbass+), cyanphase (++), Whitenoize (a ring mod in every pot), Joachim (Limit), Hal Dreamer (monsterkick), ld (jacinth), ninereeds, asedev (+), FSM (tunaman), PSI_Corp (kraft2), Zwar (ox! the most unknown gen) Rymix (stereobox), Automaton (2pole), Zu (parametric EQ), Rout (vibrato), YnZn (the remotes), Arguru (pro2), #buzz: clatter, bawk, apo, Hym, [jester], New Atom, Fire Cat, MORBIUS!, Roman B, WizKid, ichi, and the rest.

Title:
 101
Label:

Catalog #:
[one01]
Release Date:
2004/01/02

For this first release it was set to unite some of the best musicians we know in different genres. Gathered here, they smoothly mind the gap between their respective styles; idm, guitar, one channel, low-fi, ambient, techno, etc., What better way to represent One and protest the shortsighted slant that ‘genres’ create, than to join it all under one roof? With contributions from Makunouchi Bento, Lackluster, Ronny Pries, randomajestiq, relative q, colophon, plosive, Sense, _KhlEr3L, pinkj, and Whitenoiz — You’d be hard pressed to find such a diverse album with this level of talent anywhere on the store shelves.
