Pretty Boy Crossover – Oranje Bloom {mtk024}

Artist: Pretty Boy Crossover
Title:
Oranje Bloom
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk024
Release Date:
2000/05/17

Due to our Thug-ish connections, Monotonik seems to be specialising in fragile idm from the cream of the new talent coming out of Australia right now.

So here’s another label debut, from Pretty Boy Crossover (PBXO for short, but they prefer it long and ambiguous, and don’t you forget it..) They’re a duo who’ve been around for a few years now, developing their gently individual sound all the while, and recently signed to Skam, home of.. well, a whole buncha famous people (Gescom, Bola, etc.)

PBXO have a 12″ and album due out on Skam this summer, apparently. But rest assured, you won’t be paying 300 bucks for this mp3 on Ebay, a la ‘Lego Feet’, cos, umm, it’s free. Thanks again to the PBXO guys for allowing Monotonik to put this out, and remember – buy their material when it comes out, support Monotonik artists doing the real-world thing.

Incidentally, try Pretty Boy Crossover’s webpage at: http://pleasurecraft.va.com.au/pbxo/index.html for more info and party favors.

Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:

Release Date:

The Monotonik mix-terror continues with German musician, DJ, and collaborator sys(2074), maintainer of the Corewatch Conspiracy, and boy, what a cute lil near-75-minute mix he’s concocted for us Earth aliens.

Not purely content with tricking around with Drexciya, Techno Animal and Alec Empire, sys(2074) throws his own little interludes and even Vektrex on a Monotonik tip into the whole caboodle. Highly recommended on the dark-ish intriguing-ish tip.

Hoffman – Dark Fool {mtw017}

Artist: Hoffman
Title:
Dark Fool
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw017
Release Date:
2000/05/07

Showing that he can still put out rolling breakbeats with the best of them, this Hoffman release showcases the kind of marvellous funky breaks that led De:Bug magazine in Germany to call us ‘the Ninja Tune of the Net’.

Mind you, this time round, ‘Dark Fool’ is somewhere between BT-esque progressive breakbeat, harder techno, and Incredible Bongo Band-style freestyling. Definitions are always on the tricky side, but rest assured you’ve got a treat in for you.

Subi – Mnotomo’Vo’Non {mrv001}

Artist: Subi
Title:
Mnotomo’Vo’Non
Label:
 monoRAVEik
Catalog #:
mrv001
Release Date:
2000/05/02

It may not surprise you to know that Mono and associated labels continues to cherish Subi. As mentioned before, if we were John Peel, he’d be The Fall, and now he even gets his own custom sublabel for this, his first all-new single in a year or two, preceding his forthcoming _blockbuster_ bestof mp3 album, “The Rave-O-Lution Will Be Terrorised – The Best Of Subi 1989-2000” 🙂

He’s English, he makes videogames for a living, he still honestly believes it’s 1990, and “Mnotmo’Vo’Non” (decode it at your peril) is a horribly addictive breakbeat call to all those who still think The Prodigy should stick to the matching green+white checked outfits and that Urban Hype should forever stay at No.1 with “A Trip To Trumpton”.

Super Science – We’re Like Air, Everywhere At Once {mtk023}

Artist: Super Science
Title:
We’re Like Air, Everywhere At Once
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk023
Release Date:
2000/05/02

Another debut on Monotonik, and this wonderful multi-layered idm-ish vocal-scattered track is by another of the new skool of Australian electronic talent, Super Science. Famous idm labels have been showing interest in this particular man, and I think we can see why from this busily static-flecked, almost robotically beautiful piece.

You can find out more info about Super Science, the artist himself, by surfing to his website at http://www.superscience.net – and watch out for his forthcoming album, ‘love like life in miniature’, on Surgery Records out of Oz. Hopefully we’ll be featuring some more of his tunes soon – stay tuned, Monofans.

Radix – Counting Stars {mtk022}

Artist: Radix
Title:
Counting Stars
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk022
Release Date:
2000/04/16

The first release on Monotonik for Radix, the Swedish artist who’s been making a lot of waves in the PC ‘demo-scene’ over the past couple of years with his perfectly crafted melodies and beautifully smooth stylings. “Counting Stars” is the sound of a man who’s clearly been listening to Boards Of Canada, but has seen fit to put his own spin on their innocent electronica.

What with the beautifully pitch-bent lead and the hypnotic voice drifting in and out of the background, Radix seems to have created a thing of beauty. Hopefully it’ll be a joy forever, and in digital binary form, too. Do remember to keep it for your virtual grandchildren..

Sleepy – Foob {mtk021}

Artist: Sleepy
Title:
Foob
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk021
Release Date:
2000/04/11

Alaskan ambient maestro (and artist behind the first ever Monotonik mp3 release) Jiva, returns for this gorgeous piece of ambient-drone-rock-idm under his Sleepy alter-ego. This track features sampled and processed guitars by the man himself, along with a healthy dose of background noise and beautifully shuffling percussion.

Perhaps a little reminiscent of Budd or Eno, but a little more contemporary than that, this is the kind of track you can put on permanent repeat play and not notice for hours, in a good way. Monotonik is now, more than ever, music to fall asleep to.

Thug – Sudafed x2 {mtk020}

Artist: Thug
Title:
Sudafed x2
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk020
Release Date:
2000/04/03

Australian idm wonderboy Thug lets us borrow some more of his latest and greatest tracks for exclusive mp3 release on Monotonik, and boy, are we glad he did. This particular tune weaves the dense idm melodies (that has him compared to early Black Dog) with complex rhythms and hues to create something rather original.

“Sudafed x2” continues to delight on multiple listens, not least because of the strange static impacted undertones, but in the main because it’s just beautiful techno music.

[Incidentally, dial up http://www.oninoz.com/thug for more info about the man himself and his lovely CD/LP/weirdmedia releases..]
