Disciples Of Ageema – All Times By Music {mtw008}

Artist: Disciples Of Ageema
Title:
All Times By Music
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw008
Release Date:
1999/06/02

The first release from a mp3-exclusive m211, and Mortimer Twang, in his Disciples Of Ageema guise, gives us an astounding piece of dense, rhythmical samba funk. It rocks, it rolls, and its intricacies go round and round in your head long after it’s looped, and the drums echo back from the tribal wastelands of Twang’s soul.

Exclusively reworked (and remastered from scratch) from an Ageema Blues mod release onto mp3 for m211, the practically South American moods and dense live rhythms bely the fact this has come out of deepest Sweden – Mr. Tee, long the lo-fi realist, shows he can do the mp3 thing with equal poise. It’s a must-download..

Darkhalo – Nexus/Drones {REL#166}

Artist: Darkhalo
Title:
Nexus/Drones
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#166
Release Date:
1999/05/11

A guest release from that rarity on m211, someone from a continent outside Europe. This time Darkhalo steps in to show us what an interesting reading the Americans are taking on the whole d+b thing, encompassing Californian breakbeat, acid b-lines, and even some Transeau shaken up in there – just the right side of catchy, we fear, and fully compatible with the breaks and beats that m211 insists on releasing in such a hipflask lackadaisical fashion..

Artist: Vim!
Title:
Whirlwind Snooker
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw007
Release Date:
1999/05/02

Time for Vim!’s second mp3 release, and it’s a stand-out piece of totally original ‘electronic music’, poised anywhere between breakbeat, idm, and triphop. Definitions really don’t make sense in this case – let’s just say this wouldn’t be out of place on Rephlex or Skam. Watch the trademark Follin-esque oblique Vim! chords too.. mm, retrocreamygoodness..

Artist: Distance
Title:
Untitled Bonus Track
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#165
Release Date:
1999/04/27

Wowee, a first release for Distance on the breakbeat-ish Mono211, and this time it’s a real interesting blend between his conventional unconventionality and a new sub-bass and sharp breaks style. Original, I warrant, and pretty clever with it. And the name is.. well, it makes sense to you, doesn’t it?

Prob. – Iflai {mtw006}

Artist: Prob.
Title:
Iflai
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw006
Release Date:
1999/04/07

Just feel real. Mono211 kicks back into the realm of the seriously chilled for this beguiling piece of ambient, with the faintest of triphop breaks in it, courtesy of Finnish junglist Prob.

Mm, the beautifully serene chords mixed with just the dreamiest acoustic break put this somewhere around the most ethereal end of Global Communication, with further nods to Pete Namlook and Dr.Motte on a less electronic tip. As Mixmaster Morris might ask, is it tomorrow already?

Prob+Ebb+Tek+Substance – Benedict (Stylez Remix) {REL#164}

Artist: Prob+Ebb+Tek+Substance
Title:
Benedict (Stylez Remix)
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#164
Release Date:
1999/04/02

More rewording and reordering as Substance takes elements from two previous releases (Tek’s mp3 “Benedict” and Prob+Ebb’s “Stylez”) and merges and melds to come up with this mellifluous hybrid. It’s fun to play with sounds, isn’t it? Watch out for a simultaneous/near-simultaneous Malik remix of “Stylez” on Theralite (http://pigforce.warande.net/theralite), incidentally.. mmm, synchronicity can be so constructive, hm?

Bay Tremore – Four77 {mtw005}

Artist: Bay Tremore
Title:
 Four77
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw005
Release Date:
1999/03/15

Another day, another m211 mp3 release, and this time it’s the mp3 debut of that funk soul brother Bay Tremore. He hits us with one of his intriguingly original drum and bass tracks – sorta somewhere towards the techstep that so dominates d+b nowadays but then shying away towards the melodic underratedness of artists such as Arcon2 or even Springheel Jack.

In fact, it’s different again, and, much like the Tek tune we’ve previously put out on mp3, it offers a different perspective to a well-worn formula. Different perspectives, we’re sure you’ll agree, are good. And the ticktock-zooming-to-bass effect partway through the track is damn original to boot…

Relief+Twilight+Ramone – Pulse Of Life (Rewind) {REL#163}

Artist: Relief+Twilight+Ramone
Title:
Pulse Of Life (Rewind)
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#163
Release Date:
1999/03/08

The ever horizontal Ramone provides us with a remix highlight thanks to his careful reconstruction of the Relief+Twilight track from a while back. He seems to have melded the track into a sorta tripped-out odyssey, complete with slowed-down drawling hiphop samples and funky acoustic bass and drums. You got it? You know I got soul! Mm, just sit down and appreciate the atmosphere, please, memsahib? This is top class entertainment, we fear…

Artist: Subi
Title:
21212121211
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#162
Release Date:
1999/03/04

If you listen closely, it just makes so much _sense_. castlemortonravekid Subi, fresh from sorting us the new version of da m211 screensaver, blasts us another of his telegrams from A500 space, and it’s so.. him. Where else could you get that authentic 1991 flava and the mechtinnytech snarerush that signifies the start of another blastin’ subi tune? nowhere else, that’s where. when i compared m211’s fascination with subi to john peel’s fascination with the fall, subi got a bit upset… but do you know where we’re coming from? 🙂 oh, watch the accompanying .jpg for some present and relevant art from subi too. good man, that.

Ramone+Trigger – Alpha Wezen {mtw004}

Artist: Ramone+Trigger
Title:
Alpha Wezen
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw004
Release Date:
1999/02/22

We return with a beautifully produced track from Ramone and his German studio partner, Trigger (who has recently been responsible for remixing Jeru Tha Damaja’s “Ya Playing Yaself” for DMC Records,amongst other things.) This time it’s a chill-out track that was briefly considered for the credits music on the Playstation title Mono211 have done the soundtrack for.

But thankfully for you guys, it’s now a m211 mp3 release, and you get to hear the distinctive blunted Ramone style given a smooth makeover. What do you say, somewhere between Sun Electric and dubbed-up Orb with a distinctive mono211 breakbeat edge? Nice echo-mashed vocal touches, too.
