Detektiv 6 is minimal but intelligent drum&bass. Various layers of interesting sounds and melodies are built on a simple but effective d&b beat. Brass stabs, female singing and different kinds of filtered arpeggios won’t leave you cold. I especially like the chopped talking samples in the middle part. Some kind of pad samples play along the beat and sounds but the melody really isn’t the main thing in this tune. Maybe this track could do with more direction like a main melody of somekind but anyhow this track is quaranteed quality that you can expect from Illusion.

ShamusCase’s (also known as illusion) “vinyl goddess” would be described as a mixture of melodic hiphop and drum&bass. This tune is very lazy with a dragging hip hop beat going out of tempo at times giving the nice effect to the track. There’s also some filtered and faster d&b beat here and there which in my opinion doesn’t fit in this track that well – but that’s only my opinion. The melodies are nice, sounding a bit Plone. The overall sound is great and this would well go as a commercial release.

H.Kyllönen – on the buses ep {ep/lp release #11}

Artist: H.Kyllönen
Title:
on the buses ep
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
ep/lp release #11
Release Date:
1999/12/16

“On The Buses” is a happy tune with lots of different instruments playing in harmony. The drums are very fast and tricky: there’s some retriggering and variations in the beat used here and there. The melodies are at times a bit confusing and even a little daft. This is actually quite a funny track but I still think the rest of this album is better.

“On The Buses (blakeymix)” is more of a serious track. The melody and the sound is nice and warm. Some kind of a choir pad and speech samples on the background and a nice slightly filtered instrument. There’s not much similarities in blakeymix and the original edit except for some samples.

“On The Buses (beauty)” takes more ambient side. The track starts with weird samples forming a rhythmic loop with some filtered noises joining in later. The moody melody is played mostly on strings. Later some kind of sine bells join in with the strings – result is a beautiful combination and a very good ambient track.

“On The Buses (calm pherm)” is the best ambient track I’ve heard for long time. The melody is very good, even sad, and has a very nice sound in it. This track has very much the same feel as Samuel Barber’s “Adagio”, which is one of my favorite pieces of classical music. The first half of this song is played only with the beautiful strings and pads with some effects. Then the minimal percussions and drumloop give some more edge to the tune without breaking the over all harmony. This one goes to the list of “my favorites of Henkka Kyllönen” for sure. It’s just a shame about those little looping problems.

ceniq – Gaylab CD {ep/lp release #10}

Title:
Gaylab CD

Catalog #:
ep/lp release #10
Release Date:
1999/12/05

01 ceniq – gaylab
the opening track begins with powerful, shifting pad, perfectly blended with reverbed, effected ‘snare’. later on, echoed bleep comes with tight beat. the only bad side is that the track is a bit too repetitive, for my taste, at least. but, to put it short: what an amazing electro-ambient track. this even would go as a warp -release.
(93%)

02 ceniq/amon – gaylab (tilt goddess)
again, harsh “fractal-generator -noise”, [that’s my term for it.] as one track in vetac cd. the track seems a bit chaotic, and i didn’t find any underlying structure or logic from it. and again this reminds me some of autechre’s more extreme tracks [and yes, this track would fit on some autechre -album, imho.]
(87%)

03 ceniq/lackluster – gaylab (lackluster reconstruct)
this is an different perspective to the first track by lackluster. i liked this edit more than the original one. this edit is a bit heavier, with more aggressive beat. personally i like lackluster’s style very much, and it shows also on this track. good job.
(95%)

04 ceniq/salice – gaylab backmix
this track starts with a semi-complex beat, which nearly goes through the whole track, excluding the few pauses. the are a few ambient strings/ chords, and especially the one which is dropped in through the whole track, in times, sounds nice. a great track, imho, but not the best one, though.
(87%)

05 ceniq – coan5
the start is perfect: a smooth blend of strings, bouncing on. beautiful, minimal ambient sound, without any irrelevant parts disturbing the harmony. when voq-ep came out, i thought that coan3 was the best ambient i’ve ever heard. but then comes coan5, which is, in my opinion, better than coan3.
(97%)

overall, gaylab cd is finished, perhaps a bit more professional than vetac, but if you ask me, i put them both on a same line. again, ceniq is proving his amazing talents composing wonderful ambient or electronic tracks. this cd would really go as a warp-release. but it’s better when it’s free. and the last word from the cover artwork: it’s superb! it really shows that gaylab cd is a finished product.

A few words from ceniq:

Amon’s tilt goddes mix: I asked amon, a good friend of mine, to do a mix of Gaylab for me as I like his personal touch in his music. Amon hadn’t had the time to do any mix for me and I was going to release Gaylab soon as I heard his latest tune “Tilt Goddes” which originally was a part of Droids Killed My Audio series (part 4 in fact) and I insisted him to give it for this Gaylab CD. I’m happy he did give it.

Lackluster’s reconstruct: I gave mr lackluster Esa Ruoho an unfinished version of Gaylab to remix (it was only about one and a half minute long) and he did a marvellous job mixing the original patterns and riffs with new drums and ideas. I actually got some ideas from his mix for my final “original” Gaylab – that’s why you might hear some similarities in his mix and my edit.

Salice’s backmix: I liked salice’s flud mix (which appeared on Vetac CD1) very much so I had to get him to remix Gaylab too. Salice did a very nice ambient remix with some fast beats leading the first half of the song. Nice stereo flanges and hipass filter sweeps give a nice sound to the drums and the end part’s ambient pads and reverbed speech samples make just a beautiful combination. And thank you Antti for totally awesome Gaylab cover art. I just love your work.

ep/lp release #9
Release Date:
1999/11/19

The melody/harmony combinations gave me an image of Tiger’s Sirius Ep being very mystical. There are some tracks having a misty or sad feel in them “Galactic Collision” being a good example. Some tracks on the other side are better described as beautiful or hope giving like “Emme Ya” and “The Palace of the Ascending Order” which are probably the best tracks on this album. Actually every tune has some kind of special feel in it.

This may not be a great album musically (though the harmony/melody side is just great as on “Emme Ya”) but is it the point after all? I think the important part in ambient music is that the music has some kind of soul in it. There is too much ambient giving no feelings to the listener but this album doesn’t go in that category.

I could say that every track here is based on the harmony and melody without having enough variety in the sound scapes. I can hear the same vox pad or choir sample on every second tune on the album. There are the different effects and percussion/drum loops on some tracks making you not fall asleep though. Some tracks could have been a bit longer for my taste. Despite the minor sidebacks this is a very good ambient album and works great as an entity.

Fairybic is a nice little tune with quite a merry melody. The track consists of a jazz bass playing a simple riff with strings and an electric piano playing the main melody. The drums are quite weird for a happy track like this. They are some kind of distorted noises – they are not fast but actually quite relaxing. The funny speech samples give a nice edge to this track.

the style of this track is something retroish trip-hop. the start is nice, with shifting chords and very crispy drum-beat. and of course, the nice vinyl crackling is included.
there’s even samples from “suomiviihteen legendat”: olavi virta and tapani kansa.
i liked this track, probably because the style reminds me of some melancholic jazz, which i respect greatly.
[yes, i know the review is not specific, but as always, listen yourself.]

A very nice mellow tune. The melody is very smooth and melancholic. The drums are nice and slow like the whole track. The nice pads and filtered synths give a special feeling to this tune. The piano gives a jazzy feel to the tune but are at times a bit too loud and could be a lot better with a little touch of reverb (in my opinion). A very nice track overall.

This long play shows both the technical and musical knowledge of Kyösti Ylikulju. There are hard and fast beats and great melodies combined in these tracks. Some are more based on the beat and the others on melody or both. This album is very good both in musical and technical sense. There are very nice melodies and harmony in many tracks (“garth&monkey” and “fat paavo (the chorus girl)” being good examples). Many tracks on this album are also mostly based on the drum beats and little rhythmical tricks or effects (Best of these are probably “tak-ap”, “eerikson” and the three mixes). “Lappi-inzoo” and “garth&monkey” are good examples of having both a great melody/harmony and well done drum programming. There are also some nice ambient tunes here: “vaimen/1 (intro abstract)” is the best ambient tune I’ve heard for a while and the untitled track at the end is pure ambient too.

“Vaimen/1 (intro abstract)” is the opening track of this album. It mainly consists of different sound effects (like speach or trains passing by) there’s also a nice little melancholy melody. This track is ambient music at it’s best.

“Fat paavo (the chorus girl)” has a very nice electric piano backing with some flute-like instruments playing melodies. The drums are something near to drum&bass beat with some filters at times giving the kick to the track. A very nice easy-listening tune.

“Garth&monkey” is certainly one of the best tracks on this album (it is very much to my taste at least). Mostly it’s melodies and it’s progression stand out. Most of Milk’s releases are very well done technically but the musical side is at times forgotten (which isn’t neccessarily a bad thing I think) – this tune is very good both musically and technically. The melodies and the harmony are great and the solo parts are just wonderful. The drums are fast and go very well along the tune. I just love this track. It has a heavy 70’s jazz/funk feel in it.

“äänen valtias (orig. it-edit)” starts with reversed bell loop (actually the loop goes on for the whole tune). This track is more based on the drums. There are very fast retriggering and fx tricks at times here. The speech samples dropped in at times give more edge to this track. I didn’t like this one as much as the first three tracks but this is also worth a listen.

“Lappi-inzoo” starts with 808-drum loops with nice timestretching and tempo changes. When the drums end there come the crazy story with the speech effected a bit (this part lasts for a minute or so). Then the tune’s formula goes upside down when the string melody comes. The strings (and other instruments) play a catchy melody (that you’ll be humming for the next couple of weeks). The drums here are very much compressed and distorted but fit in with the melodies very nicely.

“Garth&agony” is a very sad tune. The melody is the same as on “garth&monkey” but played on some kind of chromatic percussion and nice mellow pads. This is a nice tune that fits in the middle of this great album just perfectly.

“Tak-ap” is again one of the best tracks on the album. I liked this one so much that I even remixed it. This track is also known as “Numerical 6”. “Tak-ap” is mainly based on the drums and the beat tricks with heavy retriggering and pitch bends on the drums. The beats are the main reason for this being one of the best tracks on the album. There are also some melodies with strings and some sequences. But the beats are the main thing here.

“Lippone” consists of weird filtered beat loops and a filtered saw wave sample. The drums are hard resampled loops and are nicely effected (with hard compression and flange) at times. There’s not much really new in this track. Still worth a download.

“Eerikson” is a very fast mind fucking track. A mellow hunting melody makes you wait for some nasty beats. And the beats are very nice. Actually the beats consist of some filtered/distorted noise. The melodies are really depressing. I especially love the warmly distorted instrument that plays alone the end of the track. This is a great tune I think.

H.Kyllönen’s “äänen valtias (fuckcheese mix)” starts with effected speech samples and then the same melody starts as on the original edit. Then the same drum beat starts to play as on the original version. I begin to think is there anything new in this mix and then the distorted drum loops fade in. The track gets really nasty somewhere in the middle (I love the part where my head nearly exploded because of the noise terror).

Another mix by H.Kyllönen is of “lappi-inzoo”. “Lappi-inzoo (ayle001 mix)” has more new beats and melodies in it than the other mix. This one is more original I think. The beats are quite crazy at times and you really have to tune your mind when the original string melody and beats come somewhere at the 4 min mark. The new melody with it’s portamento and slight reverb is quite nice. This track reminds me of “circuit cat’s comfort”, an earlier milk tune by H.Kyllönen.

Er… I can’t say much about my own mix here. I took tak-ap’s original drum loops and built a new melody around them. Then I fucked up the original string loops with little scratching. I’m more pleased with the middle section with the beats changing again and again. “Tak-ap (ferguson mix)” ended sounding a little Aphex Twin’ish.

An untitled chill-out tune fits in at the end of this album just fine. Some kind of a pad plays this quite simple melody for the whole tune. Only the rhythmic effects and effects on the background change though at some point you realize that there are quite a few instruments along the pads playing as well. The reverbed and delayed drums are really nice (they come somewhere at 5 minutes) but the hihat like instrument might get a little annoying.

The whole album is download worth. But if you have a slow connection and don’t want to download for the whole day (and raise your phonebill) here’s my top 5:

1. Garth&monkey
2. Tak-ap
3. Vaimen/1
4. Lappi-inzoo (or the mix)
5. Fat paavo

You can also get Clayderman on CD. Just contact K.Ylikulju (below).

A nice idm tune with a nice melody with old chip-tune like pitch bender instrument. There are various different instruments and melodies playing along the main melody. The drums consist of retrigged idm bleeps and different drum loops which are effected with a nice flange at times. This track continues our happy-tunes-for-the-fall series.

pretty “happy” idm tune from rain, which is quite unkown artist to me. the track starts with strings, which are a bit echoed, and spiced up with a bit repetitive beat. at ~1:20 sine/sq-wave join in, which is the only part in this song i disliked. it sounds so, well, a bit stupid. nota bene – this is only my opinion.

not mind-blowing, but good, i’d say.

This track is a nice mixture of technopop and intelligent electronic flavour. The melody reminds me of eighties technopop (some Pet Shop Boys’ tune first comes to my mind). The melody is played with nice sequences and juno leads. I found the drums to be a mixture of Plaid like idm beats with heavy retriggering and 909 hihats/crashes.
