Title: sirius ep
Label: Milk
Catalog #: ep/lp release #9
Release Date: 1999/11/19
The melody/harmony combinations gave me an image of Tiger’s Sirius Ep being very mystical. There are some tracks having a misty or sad feel in them “Galactic Collision” being a good example. Some tracks on the other side are better described as beautiful or hope giving like “Emme Ya” and “The Palace of the Ascending Order” which are probably the best tracks on this album. Actually every tune has some kind of special feel in it.
This may not be a great album musically (though the harmony/melody side is just great as on “Emme Ya”) but is it the point after all? I think the important part in ambient music is that the music has some kind of soul in it. There is too much ambient giving no feelings to the listener but this album doesn’t go in that category.
I could say that every track here is based on the harmony and melody without having enough variety in the sound scapes. I can hear the same vox pad or choir sample on every second tune on the album. There are the different effects and percussion/drum loops on some tracks making you not fall asleep though. Some tracks could have been a bit longer for my taste. Despite the minor sidebacks this is a very good ambient album and works great as an entity.

Title: oletko harmistunut?
Label: Voodoo
Catalog #: #040
Release Date: 1999/11/07
as we are currently quite short of members 🙂 sadly, we still manage to keep the quality and release this absolutely rare and fantastic material from our finnish headquarters. this one is again from our precious new attachment a/oc. a straight translation of the title would be quite likely “are you pissed?”. anyway, i don’ know what a/oc was thinking while composing this track but i wasn’t pissed when i was playing it the first time, and i suppose you won’t either. enjoy this quality track.it belongs to his autoseries from which his debut was a sneak preview.
new members can be recruited so if you think you handle the style so precious to this group you are welcomed to e-mail me with one example of your music. but to ease this project i’d hope you to have some experience on the previous tracks released to avoid from being disqualified. voodoo is strict of it’s style. e-mails must be directed to kuu@ion.sci.fi with subject ‘voodoo apply’.
this is technic.

Title: fairybic
Label: Milk
Catalog #: rel#69
Release Date: 1999/11/03
Fairybic is a nice little tune with quite a merry melody. The track consists of a jazz bass playing a simple riff with strings and an electric piano playing the main melody. The drums are quite weird for a happy track like this. They are some kind of distorted noises – they are not fast but actually quite relaxing. The funny speech samples give a nice edge to this track.

Title: la noche verde

Catalog #: rel#68
Release Date: 1999/11/03
the style of this track is something retroish trip-hop. the start is nice, with shifting chords and very crispy drum-beat. and of course, the nice vinyl crackling is included.
there’s even samples from “suomiviihteen legendat”: olavi virta and tapani kansa.
i liked this track, probably because the style reminds me of some melancholic jazz, which i respect greatly.
[yes, i know the review is not specific, but as always, listen yourself.]

A very nice mellow tune. The melody is very smooth and melancholic. The drums are nice and slow like the whole track. The nice pads and filtered synths give a special feeling to this tune. The piano gives a jazzy feel to the tune but are at times a bit too loud and could be a lot better with a little touch of reverb (in my opinion). A very nice track overall.

Title: Flimflam
Label: Mono211
Catalog #: mtw014
Release Date: 1999/10/24
Arizona’s majestic Micro.Spy collective, including Tek, who produced one of the classic early m211 mp3 tracks in “Benedict”, come right back at us with “Flimflam”, and boy, does this one kick up a storm? Tek also has a forthcoming DJ set which’ll be posted up on the m211 website, and as a set of influences (BT, Underworld, plenty of US breaks), it pretty much maps out the style that these guys have down sososo well.
Oh, there’s a swearword hidden in the track somewhere, but don’t let it bother you. 🙂 Just listen to the wicked breakbeat style – this is the kind of release mono211 would like to think would characterise its style, going forward – that and the natty Squarepusher-ish jazz-jam, which you’ll see a lot of in forthcoming releases.. cool!

Title: pendolino
Label: Voodoo
Catalog #: #039
Release Date: 1999/10/22
huh we are running up fast since i want to push a new release out per each musician for starters. actually i’ve had some problems in uploading the previous releases to aminet and that’s why these releases appear to be out at the same time. check the release dates for correct ones.
this debut from loke, after reformation of voodoo comes in form of really impressive material. it is obvious that loke has spent time working out this absolutely fabulous track. really hard, really dark and really loke. the title is called ‘pendolino’ and its the name of a finnish bullet train don’t overdose with this cos it might cause some bad trips.
for the activity after a/oc joined. also, new members can be recruited so if you think you handle the style so precious to this group you are welcomed to e-mail me with one example of your music. but to ease this project i’d hope you to have some experience on the previous tracks released to avoid from being disqualified. voodoo is strict of it’s style. e-mails must be directed to kuu@ion.sci.fi with subject ‘voodoo apply’.

Title: alternative auto
Label: Voodoo
Catalog #: #038
Release Date: 1999/10/18
somthing unexpectable has happened. i’ve been spreading the information of voodoo being closed down due to loss of interest. this of course is mostly my own fault, it’s me who had no time nor interest for this project but one of the reasons for the quiet phase sadly is that after a departure of various artists there simply was no much activity. we lost great guys like tweeter, dharma and linus just to name few. a new page has been turned and after losing a bunch of people we have got fresh blood to the group, this new guy is of course a/oc, a friend of loke whose debut we are releasing today. this also represents the rise of voodoo because i didget some kicks for the activity after a/oc joined. also, new members can be recruited so if you think you handle the style so precious to this group you are welcomed to e-mail me with one example of your music. but to ease this project i’d hope you to have some experience on the previous tracks released to avoid from being disqualified. voodoo is strict of it’s style. e-mails must be directed to kuu@ion.sci.fi with subject ‘voodoo apply’.
so i am finding out if it’s still worth to go on with voodoo and now it is all up to you. but rising our head still doesn’t mean a new release every week. either there will not be a homepage which has been asked many times. no mailing list for the productions. only way to get your releases is the old fashioned swapmail or aminet ftp. allthough if you have an ftp server and enough room and interest to build up an voodoo section, mail me also.
here’s this superb electronic piece from a/oc.

Title: Screwdriver
Label: Mono211
Catalog #: mtw013
Release Date: 1999/10/03
Thanks to old friend Simon V. and Santorin Recordings (http://www.santorin.de), we have a guestrelease extra-ordinaire in a wicked bdrum+snare stylee. This particular bass-b00mer is actually released as a real 12-inch single on Santorin – but they’ve actually given it to us to put out for free on m211 too. Youch, d+b with a real twisted analogue edge.
So nod your head hard to the menacing kool roc bass action, and go seek out the original vinyl in the shops so you can perform the essential reeeee-wind. 🙂 Booyaka booyaka?
