Emil Klotzsch – Sandkorn {[one017]}

Artist: Emil Klotzsch
Title:
Sandkorn
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[one017]
Release Date:
2005/01/14

Despite the glut of mangled beats and click/glitch sound emerging from Germany on a daily basis, few manage to reveal something soulful and engaging like this debut from Cologne’s Emil Klotzsch. He infuses electronics with recorded instruments that often seems to take an equally obscured touch by the computer. And somehow.. underneath all the schizophrenia of sound – a solidly melodic, mature, and flowing experience is delivered.

As much a collagist as he is a song writer – Sandkorn features guest musicians Malte Weuste (trumpet) + Dominik Böhringer (violin) on ‘fanfarel’ and lends his own vocals to the lush ‘everywhere is shut’. It doesnt stop there though, this release is anything but just another tricked out electronic self-indulgence fest.

Vitax – Micromania {BKTR003}

Artist: Vitax
Title:
Micromania
Label:
 Backtrack
Catalog #:
BKTR003
Release Date:
2005/01/10

in his backtrack debut, vitax presents us with 18 minutes of the excellence I’ve begun to expect from him. tangy mood is king in vitax’s house, and the king really likes his jazzy melodies and trippy house beats. somehow, one can’t help bouncing to “playback” and “unforgettable” with pensive joy. “the violet sphere” and “micromania backtrack mix)” sneak past body-motion and groove with heart’s feet. trust your uncle valzi: these sounds’ll grab ya and hold ya tight.

Artist Comments:
time buried the old chiptunes, but we still remember them; that’s why I decided to use some analog synthesizers to play with some simple sounds. each song also contains well-known instruments (pads,piano,bass and etc.), but the presence of lo-fi sounds is felt in each song. Such experiments have formed an original genre without a name, without rules – just emotional, easy listening. i hope my music will be interesting to you, even after a lapse of time. thanks to all people.

Planet Boelex – Sinking In The Soup EP {mtk141}

Artist: Planet Boelex
Title:
Sinking In The Soup EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk141
Release Date:
2005/01/08

We’ve known of Finnish idm artist Tweeter for several years, stemming from his association with former Monotonik artist Substance’s .MOD label Voodoo, and have previously been delighted to release his gloriously smooth electronic stylings on the label. Now, the notoriously painstaking artist formerly known as Tweeter is called Planet Boelex (actually the name of his last release on Monotonik), and he makes a triumphant return to us with the ‘Sinking In The Soup EP’.

So, we start this particular cauldron of delights with ‘Stuck Tight’, a gloriously direct letter of intent, showcasing the immensely smooth, pulsing groove that’s almost redolent of Luke Slater circa ‘Four- Cornered Room’. Moving on, ‘Paprikas From Deep’ commences with slinkily pulsing hi-hat, and cheekily breaks down, halfway through, before ending all together, all allied in rather beautiful complex idm. Ending up, we have, in quick succession, ‘Rear Entrance Technology’, a gloriously ambiguous title for a very funky idm gadabout, the long, sustained build of ‘Swamp Gas’, and finally, the credits screen roll of ‘Swamp Gas Pt.2 (Outro)’, all Blade Runner shimmer in the twilight, and a fitting finale.

Lullatone – Whispering Rhythmically / Ice Water {od070}

Artist: Lullatone
Title:
Whispering Rhythmically / Ice Water
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od070
Release Date:
2005/01/02

Here is a two-tracks EP from the japanese artist Lullatone, already known for his outstanding releases and appearances on Childisc, Audiodregs and Plop records. As on those publications, the artist (Shawn, often assisted by the vocalist Yoshimi Tomida) layers glitch/ambient mellow pulses over a somber minimal layer of electronic shading (a combination of notes, drones, toys), flowing like icy water in a warmy canal. While not maybe as moody or fluid as his up-to-date material, this incredible show-up of electronic joy still finds a mellow (but not lonely) and fairy groove, through the perspired beat-box and hi-pitched sounds, and stays there for the two songs. Like two little tales told in the palm of a hand.
