Daniel Andréasson – Nackmyalgi {CANDY018}

Artist: Daniel Andréasson
Title:
Nackmyalgi
Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY018
Release Date:
2006/01/24

Daniel andréasson enters the realms of Candy Mind with a suitcase full of mixtapes, a French phrase book and a bunch of other things that we are not allowed to mention here.

He has recently escaped his everyday life as a…ok, well we are not allowed to write about this either so…

Well, let´s just say that we found him wandering about our neighbourhood and then we…no, sorry, STOP – we´re in deep water again…this is too much to write about even for us…

Hmm, you know what? We had better let the music speak for itself.

1. TITTA
When night falls and the sky is clear, Daniel lies down on the lawn to watch the stars glistening far, far away. Is there anybody out there? Do they have green lawns and crimson sunsets just like us? Do they grow carrots and race around their worlds in metal cages? Do they work or are they also on the dole?

2. LOST
One day Daniel woke up to find that one of his favourite sombreros were missing. After eating his breakfast and reading the morning paper he went out looking for it, but got distracted by a butterfly and the beautiful hat was lost forever.

3. SYTTALÖR FEAT HZ
When nobody is watching, Daniel pulls out his traveller´s phrase book and starts to write naughty poems in French. It turns him on and he just can´t help it.

4. SUMMERSHY
Once during the summer in Sweden, Daniel felt very shy all of a sudden. He locked the door to his secret chamber and didn´t come out until four years later when he ran out of food.

5. SOY CONTROLADO POR LA IGLESIA
To honour his mexican ancestors, Daniel composed this solemn hymn about sombreros and habaneros.

6. I HAD A JOB FOR FIVE HOURS
Once Daniel had a job for five hours, and one time he had a job for thirteen hours and the other day Daniel had a job for seven hours and on another occasion he had a job for just three hours and fiftyseven minutes…

7. AIRBAGSONG
It is time for Daniel to tell us a exciting story about his working with airbags. Perhaps you are now thinking that you already know all you need about airbags, but we can assure you that this is not the case.

8. CITRONEN
Daniel is wellknown for his citrus lemonade and if you ever get the chance to meet him be sure to ask for the recipe. He might not be willing to share it at first, but he has got a thing for crazy hats so have one or two ready to trade. It is definately worth it!

8. CHRISTMASLIGHTS AND MIXTAPES
Every year Daniel travels to NYC to buy mixtapes (and some christmaslights for his garden). This is a song about what happened last time he came to the bustling city on the westcoast.

Marco Messina – Ubik EP {od069}

Artist: Marco Messina
Title:
Ubik EP
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od069
Release Date:
2006/01/20

Marco Messina has been active for more than 10 years with 99 Posse, a historic Italian band, and many other musical projects (Nous and Kyò among the others), of which Resina (the result of the meeting with Retina.it) is probably the most succesful act at the time being.
With this release, he confirms his steady presence in the vibrating scapes of minimal electronics, keeping an eye open on the analogic and its lively outcome, glowing like a physical manipulation on the musical matter. The 4 tracks move in the direction of pulsating, soft electronics, which at the same time mantain the rhythmic sketch which characterizes the artist’s contaminated orientation. Tracks like “tarde” and “12 stage phaser” well reflect Messina’s disposition towards beat-mangling and soft-acid drivethrus, while more relaxed and open-minded fluxes proceed in the breathing sounds of “giù” (this being a bass-driven, punctuated soundscape with spoken intrusions) and “esp 3”.
The EP comes with an outstandingly simple and inspirating artwork by Felix Petrescu of the romanian IDM/chill duo Makunouchi Bento, who more than once gifted us with amazing releases and the 1st place in the Numia Netlabel Battle.

Zofa – Private {YKYK003}

Artist: Zofa
Title:
Private
Label:
 Yuki Yaki
Catalog #:
YKYK003
Release Date:
2006/01/15

Is it the abrasive sensation of the megalopolis Mexico City or is it more the shivering awe in the shadows of an ancient Aztec temple that keep the tunes of this Mexican Electronica craftsman confidently on the edge between beauty and bit reduction.
Just envision an immaculate House tune being fragmented into a thousand shiny dazzling splinters and then being recomposed by the artist showing an unconcealed indulgence for tiny little flaws and scratches.
Zofa keeps a moderate pace on his 5-tracker for Yuki Yaki which appears to underline the comfy furniture reference of the name itself. Zofa seems to be more after the slightly abstract dim-lit glamour of an artisan bar than after floor-breaking excitement.
This minimalist cocktail has to be served chilled!

Yuppster – Ambition EP {mtk159}

Artist: Yuppster
Title:
Ambition EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk159
Release Date:
2006/01/14

After his previous bleepish releases on the wondrous 8BitPeoples, as well as remixes on real-life labels like Zod and Carpark, we’re delighted to welcome Matt Kuebrich, aka Yuppster, onto Monotonik with the 7-track ‘Ambition EP’.

Things start with the eloquent ‘Alaska’, all plink and plonk and deft melodics, before ‘Retry Me’ radiates an almost mellow Aphex vibe, with shuffling drums and a keen sense of wonder. The rest of the EP is just as good, with some of the higlights being ‘The Draft’, which is practically jogging on the spot with irrepressible squoinks, and the humming ‘Ends’, which is practically glowing with contentment.

Overall, seems like ‘Ambition EP’ is a tight, intense, neat piece of electronic music, and we thank Yuppster for allowing us here at Monotonik to release it – such dreaminess on his part has led to much dreaminess on our parts while listening.

Loscil – Stases (drones 2001 – 2005) {[one023]}

Artist: Loscil
Title:
Stases (drones 2001 – 2005)
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[one023]
Release Date:
2006/01/07

Revealing the somber underpinnings of his Loscil recordings, Scott Morgan has given us Stases – A collection of drones based upon the backgrounds of his work for Kranky Records, from 2001 to now.

As with his previous output, Stases follows theme and concept with further reference and meaning given through the title’s definition: “..a condition of balance among various forces; motionlessness”. Textured, aqueous, warm and pleasingly rich in (often bright) tonality giving us a deeper focus and alternate view into the corners of Morgan’s music. Seemingly so surrounding, submersive, and natural – that it becomes easy to forget the complex overtones and flowing mixtures involved in the creation of them.

New Delhi FM – Daylight Confusion {mtk158}

Artist: New Delhi FM
Title:
Daylight Confusion
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk158
Release Date:
2006/01/01

You may have heard of German idm stars New Delhi FM from their excellent album release on Soulseek Records back in 2003, ‘Far From Yesterday’. Though the group originally started as a three-piece collective consisting of Sandro Boege, Paul Krege and Marc Hofling, nowadays, just Sandro is at the helm, and Monotonik is proud to present ‘Daylight Confusion’, a dense 55-minute ‘EP’ that’s the first major release from New Delhi FM in over 2 years.

‘Daylight Confusion’ is particularly interesting because of its oblique denseness, showcasing an oddly resonant brand of complex electronics that starts out with ‘Under Major Influence’, all prickly but lovable. Skewing far more minimal and alternative than other recent Monotonik fare, the title track, ‘Daylight Confusion’ itself, is a carefully building, languid pool of understated beauty.

Some other highlights include ‘Across The Floor’, which warps its way around the sonic map in an almost Tangerine Dream flavor, and ‘Faster Variation Of Straw’, a dark, drone-ish piece which is just difficult enough to please, but just accessible enough to leave you wanting more. Not, perhaps, your average Monotonik release, but rather a major, significant work from New Delhi FM which doesn’t ape, just differentiates.

Tracklist:
01 – Under Major Influence
02 – Tomorrow Doesn’t Matter
03 – Daylight Confusion

06 – Continuing What Is Yet To Come
