The long-awaited return of the brothers stim, who recently soundtracked the Danish entry to the UK Breakdancing Championships at the Brixton Academy, and hit us pretty damn hard with this “We Have Explosive”-style exploration of the gap between jungle and bigbeat. Is it just us, or is it positively dangerously good? 🙂

Surprisingly intelligent spinning techno from the ringleader of the excellent milk (http://milk.sgic.fi) – check them out at your peril, and check this out at your penelope pitstop. wish it were longer, but for the length it is, it wanders about and pulses and altogether sounds like one of aphex’s better moments. but more original than that implies. put it on repeat, our brains liked that as well. you mustn’t make your brain angry. hope you all enjoy.

Mono211
Catalog #:

Release Date:
1998/09/29

A little more guest star action, and this time it’s the rare and precious croaker frog of the genus tpolm+halcyon giving us some wickedly technotrickstical drum+bass noises. the digital edge on this track really kicks – it’s got bite, and originality in a global communication sorta way, and damn, we wish we were all finnish 😉 thanks to croaker for this one, and distance for arranging it. huplaaa! oh, it’s release 150 for mono211, too, we’ve just spotted.. a great tune to have an anniversary on, natch.

Artist: Vim!
Title:
Visual Research
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
rel#149
Release Date:
1998/09/23

Long-awaited and finally here+now, one of Vim’s best tracks from earlier this year gets a full release. one of the man himself’s favourite tracks, it seems almost too elegant to be digital, don’t you think? playing with the idiom, he twists it round our finger and spits out the drums again, all filtered, spinning round and round.. hmm, sometimes we feel guilty we don’t make people pay for this kinda thing 😉

Substance – Smart Identity Control {rel#27}

Artist: Substance
Title:
Smart Identity Control
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
rel#27
Release Date:
1998/09/22

A return, at last, for the rather versatile Substance, and here he is demonstrating succinct knowledge of the beep and tuck. Almost mechanoid, this is somewhere between Kraftwerk and Mu-Ziq, and has those gorgeously kiddie melodies so beloved of Warp-ish characters all the way from Sir Aphex to the recently recognised Plone. Back into the fold then, and good to go. Wheeeee.

Title:
bt.do.d+b.remix EP
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:

Release Date:
1998/09/15

It’s tricky. In some danger of becoming the Penn and Teller of the underground scene – now you see him, now you don’t? With the undercurrents of the macabre but the straightahead gobsmacking in there too, it’s a valid comparison, but, let’s face it, Bay Tremore just ain’t that.. sick. Although perhaps some of his basslines are a little.. evil 🙂 Anyhow, in the latest instalment he takes on some of the recent mono211 releases from ramone and substance, gives them a good seeing-to, and dumps them in the gutter, bloodied but somehow a whole lot tougher. c-c-call the c-c-ops. 🙂

Tracklist:
01 – Ramone+BayTremore – Bango (bt d+b remix) [XM] [FLAC] [MP3]

Serkul – Boybie Socks {rel#26}

Artist: Serkul
Title:
Boybie Socks
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
rel#26
Release Date:
1998/09/09

Sent to us here at monohq a while back, this track starts off little and just grows.. strange, perhaps, but strikingly original and somewhat off the beaten track. The percussion-based timechange half-way through is a real killer, too.. watch your brain go for barrel rolls as it actually actuates. Impressive with that steeldrumchiptuneambience thing, and loopily melodic, aussi. thanks again, Serkul – mucho appreciato.

Artist: Prob.
Title:
Restless
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
rel#147
Release Date:
1998/09/02

Prob. returns, this time on Mono211, with a track originally left off his debut Monotonik release because it was a little more Mono211-inclined. So we waited, and watched.. and put it out on Mono211. This is both tempestuous and practically horizontal at the same time, and sorta fun with it. Oh, congratulations to Prob. for making 7th (as far as we remember!) in the Assembly’98 music competition at the end of July. We completely forgot to mention it before now.. but now we recall. Total recall 😉

Back from a break with another guest track, this time from the rather smart French musician WillBe, courtesy of Theralite. A real headnodder, this one, something to put on repeat play whilst you chill out and do some work or read the paper or just have a snooze. Background chant courtesy of.. damn.. who is it again.. Jeru? Nah, some rap kid.. Shyheim? it’ll come back to us 🙂
