3818919/w – Nachos Supreme EP {mtk008}

Artist: 3818919/w
Title:
Nachos Supreme EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk008
Release Date:
1999/08/15

The first EP release online from Monotonik, and that quirky English idm-ster, 3818919/w, comes up trumps with some beautiful tracks influenced by everything from Bola through Bochum Welt to Plone.

The lead track, “Nachos Supreme”, is full of wonderfully twisty riffs and nimble drums, and “Ages” and “Cheshire” float into melodic ambience of the slightly surreal, fevered kind, whilst the final tune, “Shift- Break”, uses clunks and robot voices to bring the noise, 1982-style. Good show, old chap.

3818919/w also did the cover for this mp3 to reflect some of his favourite nights down the pub with a plan, a beer, and a plate of tortilla+tomato. Mm, cheesy.

Hoffman – Rewired Electronics {mtk007}

Artist: Hoffman
Title:
Rewired Electronics
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk007
Release Date:
1999/07/30

This is something very different from Hoffman – very difficult to describe, it sorta brings a different perspective to Monotonik. Skittering but solid beats, a simplicity which belies its complexity, this is techno, but not as we know it, Jim. Like a softer version of the kind of hard techno favoured by Jeff Mills and The Advent, perhaps, it wanders and phases but keeps up the 4/4 beats, ticking over above all. Sparkling and rough all at once, categorise this at your peril.

Artist: Sushi Brother
Title:
Shadowfighter
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:

Release Date:
1999/07/18

This piece of trickjazztical funknology comes at you outta Staten Island.. uhh.. Sweden, and monkeys around with your peridontal atrium in a wondrous, Squarepusher meets Ninja Tune style. Gotta love that that cut-up style courtesy of Sushi Brother, who’s aka Balrog of m211-affiliated furry animals, TPOLM.

See, Spot, see the scratching, see the oldskool samples, see the twisty synth riffs and brass hits, run, Spot, be very fearful indeed..

Dharma – Dance To The Drummer’s Beat {mtw009}

Artist: Dharma
Title:
Dance To The Drummer’s Beat
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw009
Release Date:
1999/07/03

To say we were blown away when we heard this one is probably an understatement. Since we switched to mp3 only, most m211 tunes use many of the advantages of that format, and this is a beautiful example (yehyeh, you can stop bitching now, MOD traditionalists!).

In any case, “Dance..” is an absolutely spectacular funkjam straight outta the Dharma+Prob. studiobunker in Helsinki. Dharma plays live bass and guitar on this one, and would also like to thank Panu Syrjänen for the wicked live tenor sax playing. On with the music, on with the show..?

Also, a further plug – as you might have heard, Dharma and Prob. have a single out on the Audio Couture sublabel of Moving Shadow in just a few weeks – it’s called “Soulwarrior” and it’s by Dharma+Dice – we’ve heard the tracks and they’re the funkiest d+b you’ve EVER heard, and that’s official 🙂 So don’t forget to go buy the 12″ at your local record emporium.

Lackluster – Bothersome (Mother Mix) {mtk006}

Artist: Lackluster
Title:
Bothersome (Mother Mix)
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk006
Release Date:
1999/06/29

An mp3 single taken from the limited-edition CD by Lackluster (aka Distance), this track finds him in typically drifting, understated, beautifully pin-sharp ambient form. Chords steal quietly over the top of quietly pulsating drums and weirdly insistent bass, like the slow conquering tides.. perfectly balanced, electronics practically sound natural when they’re like this.

Compare and contrast to any other mellow ambient idm you like, in the end nobody sounds quite like Lackluster (but, of course, he doesn’t sound lacklustre at all – and there’s the paradox.)

[thanks to Hotwire@NinjaGirl for cover-image – m_end.jpg]

This is the end, my friend. mono211 and monotonik will continue to put out the best mp3s, CDs and so on, but MODs on mono211+tonik end here, right now. You wouldn’t want us fading away, would you? Better to burn out with this final compilation. It’s been over 3 years and getting on for 200 releases on both labels, so the title – pretty suitable, we guess?

h0l and the rest of the mono211/monotonik crew would like to extend their thanks to everyone who ever released MODs via mono or mono211 or monotonik, those who helped us with distribution and webspace, supported us with emails, kind words, and encouragement, and those who listened to and enjoyed our tunes. There’s plenty of MOD groups around, but we’d like to think we have a special place in your hearts as one of the groups who did things a little differently.

Enough. Keep on checking http://www.mono211.com, and keep it fresh. The best, we’ve been assured, is yet to come.

Disciples Of Ageema – All Times By Music {mtw008}

Artist: Disciples Of Ageema
Title:
All Times By Music
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw008
Release Date:
1999/06/02

The first release from a mp3-exclusive m211, and Mortimer Twang, in his Disciples Of Ageema guise, gives us an astounding piece of dense, rhythmical samba funk. It rocks, it rolls, and its intricacies go round and round in your head long after it’s looped, and the drums echo back from the tribal wastelands of Twang’s soul.

Exclusively reworked (and remastered from scratch) from an Ageema Blues mod release onto mp3 for m211, the practically South American moods and dense live rhythms bely the fact this has come out of deepest Sweden – Mr. Tee, long the lo-fi realist, shows he can do the mp3 thing with equal poise. It’s a must-download..

Kuu – Contours Of Infinity {mtk005}

Artist: Kuu
Title:
Contours Of Infinity
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk005
Release Date:
1999/05/19

kuu, aka substance, scores a majestic little piece of monotonik-ness from the depths of his pure sinewaved soul. beautifully drifting for most of it, the final couple of minutes change tack into a minor hailstorm of electronic noise. the sustain goes on forever.. just a really, serenely beautiful track. comparisons are needed but not really forthcoming – perhaps a little like Luke Slater when he’s being a little mellower? Who knows? Well, you do when you download it, we believe.

[apologies, btw, that it’s so big in k, but it’s a long tune and the pureness of it dictated we put it out at a slightly higher compression quality, 160kbps to be exact.]
