And the band played on. With the band, in this case, being made up of the rather smart Finnish-type Vae, formerly known as Strala, and boss of the smart Net.label Kahvi (recently resurrected from purgatory, and looking all the better for it!)

In any case, “Harry Slazenger” (no relation to Jake, Vae assures us..) is an initially distant, suddenly pendulum-like swing through sweetly toned electronic pop music – like Kraftwerk without the Teutonic bent, or a massively slowed-down electro-machine of the kind Drexciya or Anthony Rother wield. Muha, it’s subsonic speed robot boogie time again..

Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtkdj07
Release Date:
2000/07/03

A little more of the mixed-up-ness for your tired brain, and perhaps the best mix Monotonik’s released so far, Slovenia’s DJ Nova presents us with a mix of classic older Monotonik tracks from Lackluster/Distance, Prob, Jiva, and others..

In the style of his previous mix for Mono211, but much more laidback, “Oldskoolmonotonikantiks” uses soundscapes, cut-ups, and ethereal voice-overs to really mix things up intelligently, and the selection of tracks is pin-point sharp. In conclusion – this is your brain [&]. This is your brain on Monotonik [!!&!!]. See what we mean?

Tracklisting:

1. Distance (aka Lackluster) – “Grind”
2. Dharma – “Otsuki”
3. Distance – “Only”
4. Distance – “Tourists”
5. Dune – “7”
6. Jazz+Fndr – “Antigotchi”
7. Mellow-d (aka md) – “b”
8. Distance – “Thor’s Magic Bathtub”
9. Prob – “Chinwokh”
10. Prob – “Naks Raks”
11. Distance – “Mabo”
12. Prob – “Skyline”
13. Jiva – “Unicorn”

[NB – A number of these Distance/Lackluster tracks, previously released on Monotonik, are available in souped-up LP/CD form via Focus/DeFocus, please consider supporting Monotonik artists and buying them.. check out the Lackluster discography for more information/online stockists..]

gd – Space Bar – Session 1 {mtkdj06}

Title:
Space Bar – Session 1
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtkdj06
Release Date:
2000/06/25

Monotonik hasn’t had much chance to showcase less dark chill-out mixes up to now, but with so many of our artists being fans of the dreamiest ambient techno, as showcased by the FAX label and bands like Global Communication, it was only a matter of time.

Fortunately, San Francisco’s gd, an oldskool demo-fan and friend of Mono, has stepped up to the plate, so to speak, and delivered an excellent mix that blends Deep Space Network, Pete Namlook, and even Monolake in a sparsely electronic but refreshing mix-up. Also interesting to note that this mix solely uses Pioneer CDJ CD-mixers, and to very good effect.. with virtual turntables, pitch-variable CD players and vinyl all becoming parts of the DJ’s repertoire, blending sounds has never been such fun, or sounded so good.. 🙂

Track listing:

1. Deep Space Network – “The Beyond Within”
2. Monolake – “Abundance”
3. Global Communication – “9.25”
4. Move D + Namlook – “The Retro Rocket”
5. Spacetime Continuum – “Transient Generator”
6. Move D + Jonah Sharp – “U”
7. LTJ Bukem – “Feel What You Feel”
8. John Martyn – “Sunshine’s Better (Talvin Singh Remix)”
9. Galaxy – “Aquarian Deep Sea Diving (Part 1)”

Sense – Bubble Blower {mtk027}

Artist: Sense
Title:
Bubble Blower
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk027
Release Date:
2000/06/20

Fresh from his appearance remixing Lackluster for the DeFocus-released “R U Oho?” 12″ (FOC354), the Australian artist Sense, who’s been around the music-scene a long time, and is finally getting more welldeserved recognition (he’s played supporting Aphex Twin on his live Oz jaunts, and even now is being courted by Jeff Mills for his new label..)

“Bubble Blower” is a wonderfully serene piece of ambient techno, calmly rippling through your speakers (or, indeed, headphones) with gently drifting synths, bass drum pirouettes, and snatches of.. well.. a certain Mr. Wonka and his guests, right? This is, honestly, one of the most beautiful pieces of music Monotonik’s ever released – in our opinions, a future classic. But then, we’re horribly biased, right?

Various Artists – Supermariountwirled EP {mtk026}

Artist: Various Artists
Title:
Supermariountwirled EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk026
Release Date:
2000/06/04

A long time in the making and finally here (thanks to the contributors for their patience!), this EP gathers together 8 different re-interpretations of one of the greatest videogame soundtracks ever, from arguably the greatest game ever, Shigeru Miyamoto’s 1991 SNES classic “Super Mario World”.

Koji Kondo’s sublime original score has been subverted by a number of idm-listers and Monotonik collaborators, and the results, we’re sure you’ll agree, are interesting, to say the least. From Veer Nales’ spookily subversive glitchy take on Mario’s underwater themes, to a beautifully widescreen Xllv remix, all the way to Subi’s typically, uhh, different remix of the theme itself, we hope the plumber thinks we did him proud. and that, umm, he won’t sue 🙂

Subi – The Rave-O-Lution Has Been Terrorised – Best Of Subi 1989-2000 {mrv002}

The Rave-O-Lution Has Been Terrorised – Best Of Subi 1989-2000

Release Date:
2000/05/28

As promised, and as most of you have been dreading/looking forward to, the Subi best-of retrospective has finally arrived.

Throughout his 11 years making music in the Amiga ‘demo-scene’ and outside, Sam Brown, aka Subi, and formerly known as Subculture, has always shown originality and a doggedness that’s characterised his excellent output. The typical Subi release blends cheeky samples, breakbeats, and rampant catchiness to produce something that’s pretty much unlike most of the other music out there – and that can only be good.

A veteran fan of the oldskool hardcore/ravescene, Subi, who works as a computer game developer in Manchester, England, has been producing his odes to classic rave/breakbeat with the help of his guitar and battered analog synths, but almost always working on his trusty 4-channel Amiga computer, which is what every single one of these tunes are composed on, amazingly.

So, rejoice in the classic oldskool breakbeat blends, and watch as “The Rave-O-Lution Has Been Terrorised” wends its way through twisted Spice Girls homages and student catastrophe-sampling hardcore tunes as Subi, well, does as only Subi can do 🙂

What’s with the title? Well, it’s ‘Chip Van Winkle’ in the sense that Vim!’s output is still roundly slept on. When, oh when, is someone going to sign him up for his major record label debut, Esther?

In the meantime, we don’t have any funny-looking vegetables for you, but we do have this compilation of the Vim! .MOD ‘chiptune’ (that’s .MODs using very small instrument samples, fact fans!) output from the past few years. Highlights include any number of messed-up ‘Ghost And Goblins’-influenced drill+bass weirdness and strange-ass arpeggiating wonderfulness stylings, and, yes, the “That’s Life” theme too..

Another welcome release from Australia’s Tim Koch, and this particular track, once composed under the Tsunami Brothers moniker, mixes weirdly compelling rolling beats with quick changes of pace and high falutin’, radio-tuning-spattered synths.

As mentioned previously, Thug’s “Isolated Rhythm Chock” album on Aural Industries is a big hit with melodic idm fans all over the place, and his previous releases on Monotonik as Thug and Serkul have been pretty popular, too. More of his work soon, we promise..

Elektroblef – Md Showcase {mtkdj04}

Artist: Elektroblef
Title:
Md Showcase
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtkdj04
Release Date:
2000/05/17

Another dj-set from our Slovenian friends at Elektroblef, this hour-long mix mainly showcases Monotonik friend and affiliate md (once mellow-d), who was due to release his “Between Gaps” album on Monotonik as our first CD release.

It now looks like we’ll be sticking to the Internet-only thang, so we may release that album as mp3-only, or md may do something else spooky with it. In the meantime, the first released track from it, “Fres Core”, is available on the Merck records compilation “Squadron” (try http://www.m3rck.net/squadron for info/realaudio – the compilation also features many other Monotonik-related people such as Lackluster, Frank Bolero, and Bauri.)

Md will also be CD-re-releasing his classic FM/Monotonik mp3 album “Appelsap” on Merck Records soon. But in the meantime try this great mix of his older material, both from that album and elsewhere..

[Interestingly, the whole mix is bookended by fellow Five Musicians member Hunz, who collaborated with h0l right back in 1991 on synth-pop atrocities but now has a proper record deal for his NIN-ish semi-electronica.. ah, the hindsight!]

the tracklisting for “Md Showcase” is as follows:

. on me > hunz
. cxib > md
. headroom > md
. laivurinkatu 6 > md
. te.2r > md
. xilo > md
. ibo:ng > md
. trem muls > md
