Please Annihilate Oulu – Please Annihilate Oulu {mtk043}

Artist: Please Annihilate Oulu
Title:
Please Annihilate Oulu
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk043
Release Date:
2000/12/07

A debut of sorts and a comeback in other ways, as a mysterious Finnish artist called (for the purposes of this release) Please Annihilate Oulu gives us two starkly contrasting tracks.

To start things off right, “Copyplate” is a truly virtuoso piece of freejazz vs. drill+bass vs. whoknows, and is quite unlike anything out there right now. Don’t worship the glitch, worship the crazy itch. On the other hand, “Lissabon”, from a couple of years back, is a calmly authoritative piece of tick-tock, stringflecked melancholia. Blissful.

Who is he? Those who remember the Amiga demo-scene will know him well. He’d prefer to be known for here+now, tho, so let’s just say – Rebels, Virtual Dreams, CNCD, we’d love to ‘meet+greet’ him – oh, you know the score.

Subi – Serendipity City (2K Remix) {mrv003}

Artist: Subi
Title:
Serendipity City (2K Remix)
Label:
 monoRAVEik
Catalog #:
mrv003
Release Date:
2000/12/01

That irrepressibly, uhh, irrepressible Subi returns with a new release on his very own monoRAVEik sublabel, and this time it’s a 21st century remake of an almost decade-old track of his, “Serendipity City”.

Whilst the original stayed very .MOD-ish and staccato, this remix smooths out to funky oldskoolinflected drum-roll breaks and an almost progressive breakbeat feel. Could it be that, finally, Subi is coming back in fashion? This track wouldn’t feel out of place in a nu-skool breaks or trance set.

But let’s put that unlikely idea at the back of our mind, and concentrate on bobbing ones head along to the snare-rush heaven created, albeit temporarily, in our headphones.

(And, yes, someone other than Subi is planned to release on monoRAVEik soon.. crazy tho it may seem.)

Fun-Tourist – Who Needs Alice Anyway? {release #92}

Artist: Fun-Tourist
Title:
Who Needs Alice Anyway?
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
release #92
Release Date:
2000/12/01

“Who needs alice anyway?” is a marvellous track that adds iem-flavors to something that’s a little like top-of-the-pops-trance basis. This is Fun-Tourist’s second milk-single following partly the same path as Face On/Take One (which has gained quite amounts of radio playing here in Finland by the way): both the melody and drums are on the same line competing to take over the tune. The first three minutes are totally built on playing with beats and loops. I think there’s even a loop sampled from Alice Deejay along the vocoder-lines and Kraftwerk-like sequences. Fun-Tourist is a magnificent composer even seeing from the musically traditional point of view. In this genre of music (though I feel awkward when I say the word “genre”) the rhythmitechnical side (the twisted beat experiments and tempo trickery explorations, you know what i’m talking about) often takes larger part of the tune leaving the melodic part more on the background. This isn’t the case on Fun-Tourist’s tunes despite the fact that the wicked beats and rhythmic effects are a major content in them – especially in the 3-minute intro of “Who needs alice anyway?”. This tune is definitely composed with a smile on the face as after the intro of crazy retriggering of drum loops with varying effects on them the tempo rises and a whole other tune merges from this: an ultimate rave track. Or that’s what i thought to myself when I first heard this tune at the Koneisto-festival last summer. I’ve never got myself that swetty raving to a tune. Anyway, after the rave part the tune gets all wicked and twisted again as the drums eat themself with the rhythmic trickery and some melodies stay to play fading the track away. A magnificent, hardly categorisable track both for party and listening.

put all your faith in us and be rewarded. one thing which bothers us here at the headquarters is that there are some damn individuals who have been following up voodoo all the way from it’s beginning and still are whining about our small amount of releases. to make it clear now i’m saying it for the last time. we concentrate on quality, not quantity and if it doesn’t fit into your ideal world then sod off. as a bit more positive note we got a new member to our forces. welcome s!nist3ra to the group!

this track had been lying on my harddisk for an week or so until i grabbed it to my next project. the track itself consists of analogic sounds and again is pretty simple one. that however is one of the interesting bits, to fiddle around analogic samples and put them in layers. you may notice that the two main instruments are working on two whole melodies on the same time.

Prob. – Emotion EP {mtk042}

Artist: Prob.
Title:
Emotion EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk042
Release Date:
2000/11/24

After a longish period of hibernation, Dice, aka Prob., the Finnish breaks-guru who’s a longtime Dharma collaborator and has previous and forthcoming 12″ releases on Audio Couture, Straight Up Breakbeat and Formation, comes up with a gem of a mini-EP for Monotonik in his more laidback Prob. guise.

First up is the title track, “Emotion”, a wonderfully horizontally-inclined d+b-flecked track, reminiscent of some of the output on Certificate 18, perhaps – all insistent snares and pirouetting bass, but with an overlying melodic structure that’s simply creamy.

Twin that with the remix of Prob+Mirko’s “Body Rock” track, the original of which has already been requisitioned for a public-access interpretative dance TV show, “Praise You”-style, we kid you not, and we think you’ll find the perfect duo. The “Body Rock – Remix” is almost Kernkraft-catchy in a ‘only slightly less cheesy DMX Krew’ stylee, and overhauls the original into a more complete piece of electro madness, if that’s possible. And check the irresistable whitneyhoustonesque keychange for the last verse? Scoore..

Spark – Fingers {release #91}

Artist: Spark
Title:
 Fingers
Label:

Catalog #:
release #91
Release Date:
2000/11/20

A nice catchy melody and sweeping pads on a synth sequence that starts from the very beginning of the tune build a catchy on-going iem track. The pads really add a nice edge to this tune. Almost from the beginning comes along also the drum line. The comp is fast and simple. The drum sounds are maybe a bit too thin though. A bit more bass and punchier drums would suit this track perfectly if you ask me. Though there’s not much happening in this tune it still doesn’t get boring – the clever usage of fading out drum or melody tracks keeps this tune going.

Artist: Spark
Title:
Fotoc
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
release #90
Release Date:
2000/11/20

“Fotoc” is a beautiful combination of chillout ambient melodies and harsh distorted drum line. The drums aren’t aggressive and don’t take over the tune as they often tend to do in this genre of music. The comp is rather a minimal brushing sound of some kind. The main thing in this track are the melodies. They are played with sine-like leads and a harsher lo-fi electronic sound. Fotoc is a nice ambient tune that will stay on my playlist for the rest of the winter. And there are plenty more Spark tunes available at mp3.com/spark.

Too Many Cookies EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk041
Release Date:
2000/11/13

Long-awaited and finally sorted, this 4-track EP is from US artist Proem, previously known for his excellent “Burn Plate No.1” album on Hydrant and supa compilation appearances on Toytronic and Kracfive.

EP opener, “Hyla1”, takes us deep into drone territory, echoing and subtly glitching like sonar waves, before “Romanian Fruit Bowl” cuts loose with spacey multi-layers of minimalist loop-free drill+drum action.

“Access Mike” switches up a gear into cicada-like percussion and politely sledgehammer bassdrum action with delicate melodies floating over the top, and “Romanian Vegetable Platter” finishes things, marvellously, on an octave-down, forceful approximation of a pleasant whirlwind floating through your immediate area.

The Art Of Falling Down EP

Monotonik

Release Date:

It’s always a pleasure to introduce someone new onto Monotonik, and in this case, it’s German composer and DJ, Crashkid, who brings a more organic, acoustic edge to our sound with this 2-track EP.

“Stair” is almost hiphop-like in its rhythmically shuffling beats, but with structured guitar overlays and subtle phrasing, you can see why Crashkid counts My Bloody Valentine alongside more conventional electronica as some of his main influences.

The second half of the EP, “Telerain”, brings more picked acoustic guitar loops over gorgeous sinewave chords – mm, forbidden tones of devilish attractiveness have seduced us.
