Tatsu – August EP {mtk152}

Artist: Tatsu
Title:
August EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk152
Release Date:
2005/09/10

Having discovered Japanese techno artist Tatsu from his wonderful early work on his net.label Bumpfoot, we co-opted him to do an exclusive new EP on Monotonik, and the immensely lush 6-track ‘August EP’ is the result, showcasing the immensely pure, almost Detroit-tinged pastoral electronica – no tricks, no feints, just a trip back to the classics.

We start with ‘Stillness/Introspective Me’, which briefly showcases some gorgeous ambience, before moving straight into ‘Sky and Sea/Daytime Dream’, which sets the agenda – gently building, retropercussive techno, with claps and hi-hats that sound like they’re straight from 1985, but a purity of vision that make things shine. Going on, ‘Highland/Glass and Mountains’ is just amazing driving musicmechanical, straightahead and oddly almost Robert Miles-like, but avoiding trance cliches on the way to delirium. And so we continue on – ‘Evening/Setting Sun’ is if anything, even more bliss-like, with more trademark single-key melodies and an unplaceably backwards-looking tint, and ‘Deep and Calm/Falling Asleep’ works the goodness just a notch further, before ‘Memories Of Summer/Goodbye’ ends everything out with a gentle fade. More, please.

Penny And Ashtray – Automation {CANDY011}

Artist: Penny And Ashtray
Title:
Automation
Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY011
Release Date:
2005/09/09

Candy Mind is back from the stack with a nice new release from Japanese chip-techno star “Penny and ashtray”, who’s telling us, for example, which way that is the way up.

Minimalistic and naive, “Automation” is feeling like a fresh wind from the other side of the ocean (or many oceans perhaps), giving us a dancing experience we’ll never forget.

Ranging from electroish “This way up” to retro “Don’t push”, “Penny And Ashtray” is making us smile, always singing with his unmistakeble electro-voice.

1. THIS WAY UP
There are many ways heading all directions all the time. Penny (and the ashtray) is exploring the way up this time. He’s expecting to find heaven, but is just finding a lot of strange animals and a cart of plastic.

2. GETTING HIGH
Penny and his ashtray is playing a 2 player rave party Nintendo-game. You get 500 points for every dance move you make except if it’s really cool; then you’ll get 1000 points. There is also a lot of drugs flying around the place, and you don’t know if you should avoid them or not. Are they enemies or friend? It’s a strange game. But fun.

3. DON’T PUSH
In a small laboratory in Japan, there is a lot of strange controls and machines. The machines were originally made as toys for the professors, but nowadays there is only one simple rule: Don’t push!

4. AUTOMATION
Automation? Yes, indeed! We all need it.

Planet Boelex – Never change {od079}

Artist: Planet Boelex
Title:
Never change
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od079
Release Date:
2005/09/03

Planet Boelex is already known for his incredibly successful releases on Monotonik, and Ogredung already had the pleasant chance to host him with the monster hit ‘No Business Like’ (078), which met the favours of hundreds of fortunate electronic heads worldspread. “Never change” sounds kind and charming, yet intriguing, a voice who promises that would take care of you, and that little later for you would open up new worlds, unroll an endless succession of magnificent possibilities. The artist’s music is somewhat obscure, a connive, fascinating and complex in his ineffability; echoed notes like snowflakes falling against the deep, darkening sky make P.Boelex’s rhythms passional, without the obsession of the beat, magistrally constructed within an overall architecture of perfect blendings, atmospheres, lights. Writing about these three tracks is unfair, because nothing in the written form would exhaust the essence carried by them; but of course music is here where the words fail.

01 – Never change
02 – Beaver tactics
03 – Planet Bee

Killing Balls EP

Catalog #:
od076
Release Date:
2005/09/03

Karaoke Tundra handles brave sounds and he’s extremely good at it; these 4 tracks have the peculiarity to sound strong and deep, enjoyable and funny to listen to while leaving a spot of entertained interest in the listener’s head. Despite the extremely reduced choice of channels in each song, everything works so nice that it’s impossible to turn off the player after the first listen. One is simply induced to press play on tape again and get back to that “what did I just hear?”. All is moving around hip-hop and direct beats with blips and hi-pitched turntable/sampling enjoyment and one simply wonders what’s going on next; in fact, a point of strength in K.Tundra’s music is being capable of varying amidst a vast assortment of moods while keeping an invariable approach toward the beat.
Karaoke Tundra has released a full-lenght (from which these 4 tracks are extracted) on the CD label Mufonic recordinx and features the presence of skillfull hands like DJ Spinhandz, MM tm, Mastroianni, Bourek, Blue M, ok_01.

Erik Svensson’s EBM is amazingly crafted and catchy, structured with samples and minimal noise influences throughout the bass-driven tracks, all conveying into dancey, layered songs that you can easily become addicted to. All of this, together with fast-paced recalls to certain dark atmospheres and rhythms typical of early electro-body music, make “What total age?” a kicking and moving 3-tracker, a work you will play loud to enjoy it full and hard-hitting, sometimes saturated in its density but walking with firm steps in ten body-enticing minutes.

perhaps it’s ironic that ‘it only hurts when i think about it’ is hard to think about, even by our standards. it’s so innocuous that it practically begs to be ignored. if you manage to bring it to the forefront of your attention you’ll be pleased by the surprisingly evocative texture of the lone instrument — like a plucked oboe, or a reeded violin.
