These songs from mid 2003 to early 2004 were compiled for a recent live performance at Standard Deviation. The mix derived from an earlier demo cd with songs from 2003, but newer songs have been added and some updated. These limited (30) wood box sets were given away and sold in Louisville, KY., Chicago, IL., and on the Internet.

The performance and artwork of Adrian Leverkuhn and Lisa Sipe consisted of several large paintings, live action painting (sipe), video, and sound (leverkuhn). The Standard Deviation exhibit and performance was held at the Texas Ballroom, Chicago, IL.

This latest offering from Makunouchi Bento is a special one indeed – interpretation of and sound excursion into a few of their favorite classical compositions by such powerful and original composers as Erik Satie, Anton Arensky, Maurice Ravel., they hold nothing back while adapting them within the Mabento realm.

With its twists of melancholy, nostalgia, and even childlike amusement – Trcutu manages to hold onto a genuine historical and aesthetic interest found within some of the originals. At times picking up the melodies and running them through the spontaneity and textural styles of their own; while at others working not just from the originals but the influence and atmosphere felt by listening to them.

Simon Bennett aka Kwook makes his first mark at One by introducing this classy touch of ambience and sound exploration. Finding rhythms in washing machines, peeling tangerines, painting melancholy.. whatever they are, to try and pin down the sources and mentality behind a collection labeled as Immiscible stikes us as being counter productive to the process.

Bennett unravels a peek within his wide tapestry of style on this release, from the opening movement of cloudhopper to the familiar warming questions of psychopomp. As long time fans and after a month of waiting, we’re excited to release this solid work of eccentricity and exploration.

These bites of electro, techhouse, idm and ambience by Axel Bergk further dig into the minimalist corners of One. Often exploring disharmony made naturual by under-pinned hooks, subtle changes, atmospheric textures, and repetition.

Just shy of an hour, Ecru is a long player that with patient listening reveals a comfortable coherence. While being mostly minimal and beat driven it doesnt fail to recall the emotion or experience thats important to every release selected here. Tracks like Inphyne represent his techniques within a 12” beat-laden world, while Comolei and others explore the ambient side of things, bringing the atmospheres into the forefront. Mix in some elements of dub for good measure.

Vincent Fugère (aka Vizion) has effectively created an original soundtrack for the last man on earth, Koei. Composed from the haunting imagery of Aion, a graphic novel that itself may never fully exist on paper, which I can only imagine lurks in the creators mind as a continuously wandering and evolving existence.

This is both fitting and ironic… as in these times of war and unrest, many often weigh their subconscious with the end of the world compared against the current one we live in. While theme and soundscape oriented Koei:Aion is thoughtful enough to keep the listener engaged, absent of idle wander like so many similar works. Soft, subtle, and melodic, showing a great deal of patience and space… and an intriguing concept.

Through great control of melody, mood, and instrumentation, Colophon sounds out like he means it.

A soundtrack to daily life, love sick blues, or an attempt to understand what’s going on in the world.. whatever the underlying energy, it isn’t easily ignored. Almost deserving poetry rather than description, the sensibility and emotion thats intricately woven throughout this entire release makes one want to get out and conquer life, at least for the day.

The legend continues? The latest from Breitbannt of the Schleudertrauma camp features Ronny Pries (aka ronny priest, rp, rktic). Encouraging Ronny to deliver this first slice of minimal techno for One was done with deliberate action;

His work with Farbrausch, Forte Records, Thinner, Rohformat, the 101 comp (and many others) in our eyes slots him as one of the internets dominate forces of minimal techno. This is slightly more straightforward than Ronny’s usual work, but thats part of what makes Breitbannt special. Whether or not you’ve heard of him or Breitbannt yet is a problem you need to deal with, and you can do so now.

Mizati came along as a surprise treat, earlier managing to slip under many of our radars. like most of Mizati’s music, these tracks are part of a live recording session and the inspiration of the moment shines through. From the opening track ‘caballo’ to the closing ‘sediento’ Mizati explores a range of styles, but manages to keep it all together.

Conocer itself means ‘on the road’. A theme is presented of the old west and the desert, but by no means is the sound slaved to a single interpretation. Gentle and unassuming, this release at times reminds me of updated sounds previously laid by the likes of coil’s ‘the snow ep’ and cabaret voltaire’s ‘plasticity’… and I typically dont like to make comparisons.

A 45 minute continuous mix from Proswell, ft. b-sides, out takes, new material, and a few favorites from his sophomore release Carrot Dossier (columbo theme, tar and atari, rat news) on m3rck records. Even with this relation, Dryrot is easily a release with its own identity.

Finding time between releases at m3rck and running Inpuj, he explores the laid back and driving sound that’s heard between the cracks of Carrot Dossier and often strays from the sound that defined that album (as is heard within the opening minutes). While a welcome and surprise release from one of our favorites, the unique sensibility and style of this release also makes an exceptional introduction to those that have yet to hear his music and will most likely leave them searching for more.

The final track on the mix is titled ‘llipuru’ and was exclusively released on the excellent Intelligent Toys compilation from Sutemos (free). Also ft. tracks from Tim Koch, Stud, Khonnor, Sleepy Town Manufacture, Sense + more.

Leenak (kaneel) and Makunouchi Bento have once again put their minds together and created ‘Errata’, under their Miopedi collaboration. Often split releases come across with a fitting split persona, though Miopedi : Errata has strong personalities reminiscent of the ambience and sound that seemingly existed in memory long before you heard them.

As surreal and haunting as the accompanied artwork, it’s tempting to hunt down the relation and reason behind this caustic ambience.. only no deduction could bring it justice. This is the very essence of the Miopedi project that got us asking for more. Familiar and mysterious at the same time — while retaining the desire of enjoyable and repeated listening.
