Beak – Hard Nights {mtk207}

Artist: Beak
Title:
Hard Nights
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk207
Release Date:
2008/11/29

Things have been slowing down a little at Monotonik HQ recently. We think it’s something to do with just how crowded the netlabel scene has got – with literally thousands of labels, how is anyone going to find just one?

Fortunately, we’ve got a good idea of how to do it – just release stellar tracks from awesome Monotonik stalwarts. And this method is getting kicked off via Beak’s ‘Hard Nights’, the fourth release from the awesome guitar-electronics spaz on Monotonik since his epochal 2003 debut, ‘Amoral Mayor Earwig’.

We start off with ‘Sea Pen Meets Anglerfish’, the story of a subaqua coming-together which shows off Beak’s gorgeous melodic stylings, before we segue into the super-funky ‘Limozeen’, all low vocoder yelps and staccato splats.

Of course, there’s more – particularly ‘Forlon’s Diminish’, which is evocative, far-off jams in Beak’ssignature electro-acoustic doublestep, and we end with ‘Red H’, as Beak-y as you can get, with his  Squarepusher through an echo chamber beats pushed to the beautiful limit. Now, that’s a way to get your confidence back.

Ilkae – Lighter Industry EP {mtk206}

Artist: Ilkae
Title:
Lighter Industry EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk206
Release Date:
2008/10/05

You may know Ilkae from previous releases on Monotonik and also on awesome, now dormant Miamibased physical label Merck. Well, four years after 2004’s beautiful Stained Glass Confetti, backing up a self-released full-length, Ilkae returns with a similar deal – an awesome EP extracting from a new album.

This time, ‘Lighter Industry’ is a companion piece to the new, limited-edition Ilkae album ‘Light Industry’, which those interested in the beautifully scattershot, chiptune-ish idm that the veteran artist deals in can check out at – http://www.inpuj.net/ilkae/ to buy the full-length.

As for this EP, it starts out with the deliciously semi-random ‘LSK’, before lapsing into the more relaxed with the fizzy ‘Magnesium’. Other highlights include ‘Espirit De Corps’, which is almost Aleksi Eebenesque in its pure indirectness, and the grin-inducingly named ‘Endless Bark’, all phasing ambient yum. Fanks, Ilkae!

Title:
Quixotes Of Moons Fight The Windmills Of Brixton
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:

Release Date:
2008/08/24

This time round, a Monotonik debut for Project 5am, aka Jason Haye, with the distinctly trippy ‘Quixotes Of Moons Fight The Windmills Of Brixton’. Verging into deep house, electronic, and chillout, the fulllength album is a delightful mix of trancelike and straightforward.

Starting out, we’ve got ‘Angelou’, all thudding guitars and phasing synths, before we move into ‘Polar Stratospheric Clouds’, chunked up sounds to the fore. Some of the other highlights include the swooshing, almost soundtrack-ish ‘Crepuscular’, and the echoing ‘Ochanimizu’.

Overall, a delightful start, we fear – and something that will echo in our dreams for a good few months to come. Congratulations, Sir.

Coax – Wobo Jomodo {mtk204}

Artist: Coax
Title:
Wobo Jomodo
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk204
Release Date:
2008/07/29

Another, long in coming Monotonik release from Scandinavian artist Coax, and ‘Wobo Jomodo’ is a charming set of music in the classic sense of laidback electronica.

Starting out, we have the rolling, sharp ‘Balloon Funk 1’, with all kinds of sustain being built up as the bass burbles along happily in the background, before we roll into ‘Gion’, all sine beeps and happy camping.

Elsewhere in the EP, highlights include the glimmering, almost futuristic ‘Apple Beat’, with its frantic bleeps and breakbeats, before a second ‘Balloon Funk’ and a final, triumphant ‘Gecta’, all stately exit. Bravo.

Risch – Synesthesia {mtk203}

Artist: Risch
Title:
Synesthesia
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk203
Release Date:
2008/06/22

A Monotonik debut from UK electronic music artist Risch, who brings an almost Ninja Tune-esque cut-up electronics aesthetic to us with his debut EP, ‘Synesthesia’ – a delightfully flippant mix of voice samples, funky beats, and beauteous melodies.

The whole caboodle starts out with ‘Doppelverstraker’, which grooves along to a relaxed beat while also popping in samples about the pressures of modern life, before ‘Observing Fractals In Clouds’ tries the spikier, glitchier beats with great results.

Meanwhile, it ends out with ‘Under A Starry Sky’, epic guitars vs synths, and ‘5.08AM’, a chilled closer drifting off into the distance. Another example that this style of electronic music is far from dead in 2008 – 12 years after we started – and reason for us to be happy to still be here. Yay.

Northcape – Some Bright Valley {mtk202}

Artist: Northcape
Title:
Some Bright Valley
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk202
Release Date:
2008/05/26

A Monotonik debut for Brighton, UK-based electronic artist Northcape, then, with the sublimely mellow ‘Some Bright Valley’, all chilled-out strings and gently departing sunsets.

Previously having debuted a couple of self-released albums, this first netlabel release starts out with the cutely meandering ‘Red Panda’, before moving on to the even more gorgeously pastoral, almost triphopflecked ‘A Part Of The Forest’.

Also in there – ‘Low Lying Mist’ and EP closer ‘On The Hill’, which uses smart and beautiful repetition to make a chilled-out, signature Monotonik sound, awkward percussion making things all the better. Viva la Northcape!

Aleksi Eeben – The Four Tales {mtk201}

Artist: Aleksi Eeben
Title:
The Four Tales
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk201
Release Date:
2008/04/27

We’re delighted to welcome back Finnish artist Aleksi Eeben, with the latest in his beguilingly offbeat electronic ‘numbers’ series for Monotonik, ‘The Four Tales’ – all soaring leads and strange tonal interplay.

Now, it’s possible that Eeben – who has been composing electronic music for nearly the past 20 years, initially as Amiga demo-scene legend ‘Heatbeat’, is a distinctly acquired taste, thanks to his borderline avant jazz influences.

But if first track ‘Minor Tale’ – all sweetly sliding lead and pitter-patter bass – doesn’t convert you to his way of thinking, then there’s clearly something wrong here. Later on, ‘Grand Tale’ rocks the majestic rock synth crossover, all paradiddles and strange incidentals.

Finally, there’s ‘Aspen, Maple & Pine Leaves’, which ends thing on the oddest of blooping cuteness, with some almost classicl phrasings teamed with analog synth and bells. Honestly, there’s absolutely nothing else like this out there – which is why we love Aleksi.

Chromatic Flights – Heavy Stars Will Fall {mtk200}

Artist: Chromatic Flights
Title:
Heavy Stars Will Fall
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk200
Release Date:
2008/04/06

Monotonik has made it to its 200th MP3-based release (and probably somewhere over its 400th overall release, counting sublabels and .MODs), and this milestone comes in the form of Chromatic Flights’ second release for the label, ‘Heavy Stars Will Fall’.

Florida-based Kyle Wyss follows up his ‘Memories From The Audible Color Wheel’ Monotonik debut with more vaguely psychedelic, beautifully phrased idm, strangely strung out but wonderfully put together. It starts with ‘Found Glow’, all spaced out groove and smiling pauses.

Other standout tracks include ‘Fish Follow Shine’, with pulsating top notes and a strangely offkilter groove, and the echoing strange beauty of ‘Blue Supergiant’, although any of the 8 tracks can be sampled on its own for much enjoyment. A fitting release for the milestone!
