Monotonik is delighted to present a new EP from Russian idm stars Sleepy Town Manufacture, some six years after they released their first tracks for the label.

The result is the evocative ‘Hello And Goodbye EP’, four tracks of wonderfully laidback electronic, starting out with the looping, languid ‘Trem’. Next up is ‘Oopon’, showcasing all kinds of beautiful, pitchperfect chord and percussion action.

Finally, we have the slightly harder, more angular ‘Zzujd’, before we finish out with the title track, all kinds of phasing, pastoral sounds. We’re very happy to have you back in Sleepy Town with us.

Sliding lithely out of Russia, we’re delighted to present a split EP by Stanislav “Slam” Vdovin and Eugene Martynov, also known as Unit21, with whom we’ve been talking to for some time after we met them through their friends, multiple Monotonik-releasers Sleepy Town Manufacture. Unit21’s blend of beautifully understated, melody rich electronics is something to behold indeed, and we ended up settling on this small, but perfectly formed 2-track EP.

So, basically, we have ‘Lain: I Care’ by Unit21, leading off with a gorgeous ambient track, all floating and pirouetting and flexing its radiance at us, and STM bringing up the rear with ‘Lain: Say You Care’, a spattering, beat-flecked reply, again, marvellously melodic. This is the kind of EP we wish could go on for ever, but we’ll settle for the infinite loop option – it actually makes sense, in a supportive, ‘there for you’ type way, we promise.

In the form of a Valentine’s Day gift to all from Russian idm maestro Sleepy Town Manufacture, which Monotonik has sneakily re-packaged and re-gifted to the entire world, we’re proud to present ‘For You & For Me’, an entire double album picking some of the best from STM’s unreleased output from 1999 to 2002, with a number of tracks specially updated and remastered for this compilation.

Sleepy Town, formerly a duo/trio, and now down to a single member, are particularly known for their association with Lee ‘Metamatics’ Norris, having released a track both on his NeoOuija’s ‘Cottage Industries 3’ compilation and on the excellent Metamatics ‘Rewired In My Manor’ remix CD on Hydrogen Dukebox. They’ve also released several times on Monotonik, most recently the borderline gorgeous ‘Latatoo EP’ in late 2002.

So, it’s a pleasure to be putting out such a glacially dreamy double album for free – there’s so much great material on here that it’s difficult to pick out highlights, but let’s start with ‘Lea Chind’, all ethereal synths and looping melodies and soaring into the future, before picking up on the ultra-dense ‘Noil’ and its rolling waves of sound, before moving on to the almost mechanical, tragically catchy ‘Polygon’, and the closing drift of the truly serene ‘Ambient Forms N4’. All in all, a wonderful experience, and a beautiful thing to just give away just like that – for that, we thank Sleepy Town and their beguiling ways.

Sleepy Town Manufacture – Latatoo EP {mtk094}

Latatoo EP

Release Date:

It’s a pleasure to be able to put out the second Monotonik release from the Russian duo, Sleepy Town Manufacture (who are newly expanded to three with the addition of a new German-based Russian member.)

They ended up tapping their friends, both ‘famous’ and up-and-coming, to remix their dreamily ambient ‘Latatoo’ track, which is featured on the forthcoming “Cottage Industries 3” compilation on the ever excellent Neo-Ouija.

And, as the icing on the cake, Sleepy Town have complemented the original track with two original reinterpretations of it by themselves, to put the finishing touches to this perfectly chilled 7-track minialbum. Horizontality is our new mentality, thanks to STM.

To run through the tracks quickly, the original of “Latatoo” is a spectacularly ambient angel-song, with the guest vocals from Anna Yuhanova almost subliminally mixed in – sublime.

Then comes the first remix section, from some of STM’s rising-star friends, with France’s up and coming Tao (from net.labels like Ogredung and Camomille) retooling the track into his more uptempo but still chilled, xylophone and squelch-bass infused ‘Calm Mix’. Next up, it’s fellow Russian Lost_Bit (net.labels such as Enough Records), whose ‘Tatart Mix2’ is curiously orchestral, with almost subliminal pops and scratches and a celestial string section oozing serene ambience over the top.

And, with the immaculately programmed ‘K.A.B.Y.N’ courtesy of Sleepy Town themselves, with guest Alex Kozmidi on guitar and pin-sharp percussion underpinned by improvisation-heavy, gorgeous lead meanderings, we get to the second part of the remixes, from artists already known to those of you who patronise Monotonik regularly.

Firstly, the Australian wunderkind Sense (Neo-Ouija, Aural Industries) imbues his remix with a gradually rising, swelling ambient tone which peaks near the end of the track with a triumphant introduction of shuffling beats – gorgeous stuff. And secondly, Dutch idmtist Secede (Merck) gives us his ‘Another Day Wasted Mix’, which is a real grower – listen to it over and over and you’ll see what we mean.

With the final ambient lead-out of Sleepy Town’s own “Latterly” interpretation, we reach the end of the mini-album, and, if you’re sensible like us, set it immediately to repeat. We’ve already dozed off into sublime semi-consciousness once whilst listening to “Latatoo EP” – how many times can you manage it? 🙂

Oh, and finally, there may be additional remixes posted on Sleepy Town’s site in the next few weeks, but Lackluster’s great remix of “Latatoo” is one you won’t be seeing anywhere, except.. the forthcoming Monotonik mix CD? You heard it here first, more details to follow soon.

Miss EP

Release Date:

It seems like there’s plenty of great electronic music coming out of Russia recently, with critical acclaim for artists such as EU and Novel23. So we’re pleased to put out this EP from Russian duo Sleepy Town Manufacture, fresh from a compilation appearance on Russian label Cheburec Records, and looking to be new millenial messiahs for idm east of Berlin and west of Tokyo.

So, “Miss EP” shines up a real treat, with opener “Don’t You Miss Me?” hitting up wonderfully pure tones and ice-encrusted production, all classy, all the way. Then there’s shifting of gears through “Ena”, with slide-style percussives and angelic sines, and the rhythm-heavy “Nuut”, almost click-house bipbop action. And it all ends up with the seruphimally orchestral “Ostavshis”. Just so you know – the steppes of change start right here, right now.
