Sense – Further EP {mtk138}

Artist: Sense
Title:
Further EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk138
Release Date:
2004/11/20

It’s been a while, but we’re delighted to welcome back Australia’s Sense, aka Adam Raisbeck, an artist on Monotonik since early 2000, and responsible for some of the label’s most beautiful, serene classic idm moments. Though Sense’s output has been borderline prodigous over the last couple of years, including releases on U-Cover, Neo-Ouija, and Merck, plus a tour with fellow mtk.artist Tim Koch and Ontayso, he’s still found time to dig around in some of his 2003-era material and present us with the ‘Further EP’, which goes, well, further.

So, from the starting-point of ‘Onel’, all deep, deep tones and straightahead depthcharge beats, we go through the surprisingly uptempo, groovy ‘Korma’ (previously released on Kahvi and on a Merck Records mix-tape), then the amazingly vibrant, textured deep ambience of ‘203p2’, the playfulness and clear tones of ‘Plink’, and finally, the almost Orb-like ‘Church Song’, building and rising and gliding inexorably out of the sea as the sun bakes, the waves lap, and great Cthulhu surveys his empire. And he is happy.

Hectopascal – Pixies And Pixels {CANDY001}

Artist: Hectopascal
Title:
Pixies And Pixels
Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY001
Release Date:
2004/11/20

As always, putting a label on the music of Hectopascal is really hard, and this release is not an exception. With the Pixies and Pixels EP, Hectopascal is going all the way from beautiful and playful nature scenarios to computer game ninja music and groovy hip hop textures.

This release should give you a clear vision of what we are about as a label; sounds that pushes the boundaries.
Dance, laugh or just chill out, this is music free from care! It will always find the way straight thru your flesh and bone, finding your soul.

1. ONE BIT WONDER
Gliding pads and thundering drum’n’bass beats fit together in this sparkling computer game psychosis.
Sentimental and furious at the same time, this track’s nothing but pure hardcore mind candy.

2. ELAKA DJUR
Stripping the music down to its barest of essentials, Hectopascal is teaming up with the mean street mob to create “Elaka Djur”, an instant groover with hip hop roots.
Sliding in with a fistful of twiddly tricks, this track is bound to get everyone’s attention with its heavy hitting beats, warm thick killer bass and epic addictive chorus.

3. BUMP SET SPIKE
Lush and epic, the bump set spike takes us to a land where pixies and trolls are marching on tiny bridges while small fairies are looking for magical berries and bits and pieces for their mushroom houses.
It’s a happy land, but don’t get lost… in the woods there is an evil witch lurking!

4. LAST COMPUTER GAME NINJA
Prepare for the computer game ninja’s last fight! A sonic war where the classical chip chords and c64-leads are desperately fighting against raging turbo-beats in a final battle for honour.
Watch out for 8-bit shurikens, resonant war cries and exploding fists…

5. KRÅNGEL O KNASTER
Infected by a low-tech virus, this track starts of in the scattered remnants of the battlefield, where both the ninja and every drop of the turbo fuel is long gone.
Broken shredded grooves and wrecked effects are accompanied by a melancholic anthem, slowly rising from the ashes.

6. BUMP SET SPIKE (PSILODUMP REMIX)
While the original bump set spike takes us to the land of the happy trolls, Psilodump is taking us to a far future (with traktor beams and laser hot dogs).
In this sci-fi saga you’ll find epic melodies, dance beats and true heroes with special powers.

Transient – Over the River and Through the Woods {[one016]}

Artist: Transient
Title:
Over the River and Through the Woods
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[one016]
Release Date:
2004/11/17

Transient has developed his own niche blend of downtempo mixed with, well, everything else. Often sample heavy, he skitters around in time conjuring images of worn vhs home videos, dark rooms and smoke filled lounges — yet manages to salvage a modern and personalized sound by refusing to surrender to the confines of the retrospective..

Each song is a unique experience, but the release remains coherent as a whole. Most likely this is through the use of scattered vocals on songs like “look” and “my last goodbye” — a welcome addition that seems to provide the motif for the rest of the record. A theme that sits well with the dirty breaks, jazz, ambience and even theatric moments that also appear throughout.

Tracklist:
01 – electronic data
02 – basks
03 – so fine
04 – railroad flying machine
05 – no friends, no enemies
06 – hoagie hound
07 – look
08 – everything dub
09 – macrame
10 – forest zone
11 – my last goodbye
12 – muse
13 – adk thunderstorm

Joko13 – Salami Tactics {COM10}

Artist: Joko13
Title:
Salami Tactics
Label:
 Comatronic
Catalog #:
COM10
Release Date:
2004/11/17

Joko13’s latest release takes you on a musical journey from 2004 back to 2001. Starting off with the brand new mech-warrior anthem ‘Salami Tactics’, the Austrian artist once again defines his trademark sound of dark stomping minimal where the specific sound aesthetic is based on the use of digital artifacts and tight repetitive beat structures supply the necessary framework. ‘Morphine’, a track created in 2002, refers to the same principle and the outcome is a uplifting tech-house tune with a casual swing. Going back another year, ‘Part Level Boredom’ with its extensive use of spoken word, delay effects and noise represents the somewhat more experimental side of Joko13’s musical work. Enjoy another fine Comatronic release!

Partikel – Strukturer (Omstrukturerad) {[one015]}

Artist: Partikel
Title:
Strukturer (Omstrukturerad)
Label:
 One
Catalog #:
[one015]
Release Date:
2004/11/09

Strukturer was the lone release from the short lived netlabel imprint, Arkitekton. We loved it so much that upon the news of Arkitekton folding we hounded Jimmy Svensson aka Partikel to rerelease it somewhere – somehow. Lo and behold, here it is given new life. Including 2 new tracks and 3 new remixes from some favorite members of the One camp.

This beat heavy excursion into minimal techno has a driving confidence and strong prescence with which it excells in theme and seperates itself from other techno releases. The mixes then take the original underlying qualities of Partikel’s style in different directions through the interpretation and exploitation by three unique remixers – crossing the spectrum of dub, techno and glitch.

Makunouchi Bento – Live at TM04BASE (Timisoara) {od068}

Artist: Makunouchi Bento
Title:
Live at TM04BASE (Timisoara)
Label:
 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od068
Release Date:
2004/11/06

Makunouchi Bento has created a very personal style over the years, working with melody, noise and rhythm and often leaving some space for more explosive sounds and beats; this live recording is a continuation and expansion of themes brought up on ‘Rokurokubi’ (the numia battle winner track) and ‘Kunitoki’ – at times it is playing with bits of somehow dark and intriguing japanese vocals and atmospheric textures, acoustic bleeps and noises that later develop a ground-breaking, urban/dub breakbeat, with familiar textures and mysterious basspads. The whole recording seems to be one wellcomposed track, and even the older tracks are handled to the point where they blend perfectly in this wonderful acoustic/electronics mix. This release is certainly the best liveset one could expect from this amazing duo, and is strongly recommended to anyone that has been appreciating Makunouchi Bento’s work over the years.

Bliss – Goodbye Brain, Hello Heart EP {mtk137}

Artist: Bliss
Title:
Goodbye Brain, Hello Heart EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk137
Release Date:
2004/10/17

We’re absolutely delighted to put out a third release from Swedish electronic artist Bliss, aka Henrik Jose, over a year after his well-received ‘It’s Not The Sweetness…‘ EP. Since then, he’s collaborated with music video directors Pleix (Basement Jaxx, Plaid, Futureshock) on an experimental video, while continuing to work on new material, but shines out his late 2003 vintage in ‘Goodbye Brain, Hello Heart EP’, a shimmering block of entirely instrumental sound produced in his Lund studio with a glorious melange of live instruments and synthesizers.

Thus, eschewing the vocals that sometimes characterize the Bliss-ful sound, ‘You Have Something In Your Scowl’ shows a more contemplative side, almost supernaturally languid in its sound submerging, before we slide into ‘Things Will Eventually Make Sense’ and the beautiful drums mix into the complex melodies, as things start to crystallize. And, indeed, they’re fully crystallized by ‘Time Time Time’, the final track, which builds up an almost robotic Spiritualized, only with the Church Of Robot Wisdom substituted for gospel influences, and Chapterhouse switched in for long-dead bluesmen.And we greet the heart, and the brain recedes, and the curtain falls. Amen.
