Project 5am – Quixotes Of Moons Fight The Windmills Of Brixton {mtk205}

Artist: Project 5am
Title:
Quixotes Of Moons Fight The Windmills Of Brixton
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk205
Release Date:
2008/08/24

This time round, a Monotonik debut for Project 5am, aka Jason Haye, with the distinctly trippy ‘Quixotes Of Moons Fight The Windmills Of Brixton’. Verging into deep house, electronic, and chillout, the fulllength album is a delightful mix of trancelike and straightforward.

Starting out, we’ve got ‘Angelou’, all thudding guitars and phasing synths, before we move into ‘Polar Stratospheric Clouds’, chunked up sounds to the fore. Some of the other highlights include the swooshing, almost soundtrack-ish ‘Crepuscular’, and the echoing ‘Ochanimizu’.

Overall, a delightful start, we fear – and something that will echo in our dreams for a good few months to come. Congratulations, Sir.

Risch – Missing monsters {pj004}

Artist: Risch
Title:
Missing monsters
Label:
 Petite&Jolie
Catalog #:
pj004
Release Date:
2008/07/29

“Your perfect soundtrack for this hot summer.”

That could be the perfect quote behind this release made of bouncy wild beats and warm adorable leads.

After a release on “nothing less” than the well-known Monotonik netlabel, Risch pays a visit at petite&jolie and we have to admit he definitly knows how to cook this very particular electronica up, evoking a lot of early year 2000 influences by mashing up breakbeats and pop-esque melodies.

Drills’n’pink, here’s what you ask? here’s what you get and we don’t have that bad habit to lie to yourself, do we?

No need to be a synesthete to see these monsters appearing in front of our eyes, jumping, hiding, pulling your legs and making grimaces.
Sometimes quiet, and then mad, they all have their own personnal stories to tell you when walking downtown and here, at the petite&jolie treehouse, we hope you’ll be listenning at them hopping down the streets, because we love when people are enjoying life this way… after all, isn’t all about enjoying the moment?

Of course, this release is best enjoyed burnt and dragged into its cute cover, designed with love by Emi whose first appearance on petite&jolie will be, for sure, remarked.

So now let’s go! Catch these missing monsters!

Coax – Wobo Jomodo {mtk204}

Artist: Coax
Title:
Wobo Jomodo
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk204
Release Date:
2008/07/29

Another, long in coming Monotonik release from Scandinavian artist Coax, and ‘Wobo Jomodo’ is a charming set of music in the classic sense of laidback electronica.

Starting out, we have the rolling, sharp ‘Balloon Funk 1’, with all kinds of sustain being built up as the bass burbles along happily in the background, before we roll into ‘Gion’, all sine beeps and happy camping.

Elsewhere in the EP, highlights include the glimmering, almost futuristic ‘Apple Beat’, with its frantic bleeps and breakbeats, before a second ‘Balloon Funk’ and a final, triumphant ‘Gecta’, all stately exit. Bravo.

Emmerichk – 4th {YKYK014}

Artist: Emmerichk
Title:
4th
Label:
 Yuki Yaki
Catalog #:
YKYK014
Release Date:
2008/07/25

Simply titled “4th” – Emmerichk is back on Yuki Yaki. The aesthetics of the single sound, its destinctiveness and presence are more present than on its predecessor. But nonetheless, the sounds do not seem to be forlorn. Every track is its own microcosm of noise, click and motion.
Always one leg on the dancefloor, the other in the lab, Emmerichk shows us his own definition of rhythm, groove and melody.

Risch – Synesthesia {mtk203}

Artist: Risch
Title:
Synesthesia
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk203
Release Date:
2008/06/22

A Monotonik debut from UK electronic music artist Risch, who brings an almost Ninja Tune-esque cut-up electronics aesthetic to us with his debut EP, ‘Synesthesia’ – a delightfully flippant mix of voice samples, funky beats, and beauteous melodies.

The whole caboodle starts out with ‘Doppelverstraker’, which grooves along to a relaxed beat while also popping in samples about the pressures of modern life, before ‘Observing Fractals In Clouds’ tries the spikier, glitchier beats with great results.

Meanwhile, it ends out with ‘Under A Starry Sky’, epic guitars vs synths, and ‘5.08AM’, a chilled closer drifting off into the distance. Another example that this style of electronic music is far from dead in 2008 – 12 years after we started – and reason for us to be happy to still be here. Yay.
