Binary – Binatone {mtk036}

Artist: Binary
Title:
Binatone
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk036
Release Date:
2000/09/28

Long-awaited, here’s the full (and final!) album from UK artist Binary. Following critical acclaim for his 12″ on UK label Planet Noisebox, “The Music Of Sound”, constructed entirely out of noises from household objects, and the subsequent CD “Brick Wall Music”, he elected to stop releasing music altogether, and donated this album to Monotonik for a freely spreadable release online…

As a result, you get quite a lot for your money – since you pay.. no money. From the lead-off “Vienna Gigolo”, which sets the tone by nimbly cutting up the sine-waved purity of synth trills with some intricately simple electro drum breaks, this lo-fi mofo of a release blends simple Kraftwerk-ian thrills with a SID chip-ish oldskool-videogame electro stylee, as evidenced by track-names such as “Ivor Commodore” and “Last Night Rob Hubbard Saved My Life”. Mm, Rob Hubbard.

So, whether it be the continuation of the “Ballad Of Pam And Tommy” saga from his last CD (replete with samples from the Anderson-Lee home-video extraganza, still?), or the lazy vs. sharp chordsnarechordsnare looping of “More Monday Then Usual”, Binary passes all sound exams with flying colors. And if you want to return to a time when dinosaurs (with 64k of RAM) ruled the globe, “Binatone” is the perfect way to do it.

Vom – Untitled000 {mtk035}

Artist: Vom
Title:
Untitled000
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk035
Release Date:
2000/09/18

A little more unexpectedness, perhaps, in the form of this rather immaculate release from Vom. And who, exactly, might he be? Well, Vom is the drone-rock-noise alter-ego of UK Monotonik artist Vim!.. So rest assured, we haven’t mis-spelt anything, it’s just the usual Monotonik noise, but from an unusual angle.. and with double helpings of static.

And how to describe this release? Well.. it’s a trip. We travel from the serene ambience of ages, through the pixelated crowd, straight on through the unearthly, all the way to the ridiculous (yes, there’s Billy Ray hanging about in the mix there, albeit hideously injured..) Be aware that some of the sonic booms at about 04.55 (and again a little later.. and a bit later.. and later still..) may permanently damage your ability to listen to Elton John. Oh, and watch out for those seagulls, won’t you?

Duann – Domestic Scilence {mtk034}

Artist: Duann
Title:
Domestic Scilence
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk034
Release Date:
2000/09/11

Yipes. Well, it’s been the lazy summer months, but maybe Monotonik really has been chilling out a bit _too_ much recently. If this is indeed the case, then it’s the case no more, and it’s thanks to Australian idm-er Duann, who also releases material as part of the duo called Modula.

His forthcoming compilation appearance and Modula’s album on the oft-mentioned-nowadays Surgery Records should be bonzer, and he broke his charismatic reticence to offer us this gutsy, hoppin’, percussively freaky solo track.

“Domestic Scilence” it may be, but with a wounded theremin-a-like calling plaintively and an almighty Jurassic groove crashing about our ears, quiet will be the last thing on your tiny little minds..

Aquaboogie – Woozy Dog {mtk033}

Artist: Aquaboogie
Title:
Woozy Dog
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk033
Release Date:
2000/08/27

The debut on Monotonik from New Zealand-based Aquaboogie, “Woozy Dog” is a ultra-spaced electrotinted stroll through fields of.. well, if we could just focus a little better, we could work out what they were fields of, but the Earth’s moving a bit fast.. we’d better have a sit down… *stares vacantly into space, grinning*..

[Such is the power of Aquaboogie’s narcotic atmospherics, our song-describing blokes appear to have taken a funny turn. Suffice to say, some neat dialog-rippling and wonderfully laconic loops of non-fury mean you’ll be lapping up the loping ambient groove from here to Venus, at least. Neptune, if we’re lucky.]

mtwdj03
Release Date:
2000/08/19

Mono mainstay and UK breakz+techno-terror Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish) gives us another absolute gem of a mix, and this time it’s a drum+bass extravanganza taken from the best of the junglistically influenced Mono/Mono211/Monotonik tunes to be released over the past 4 years.

This is also unique in that it’s Hoffman’s first virtual mix – whilst he’s a whiz with the ol’ Technics, this track was mixed using the Virtual Turntables PC software alongside a Numark mixer, plus an Alesis QuadraVerb for extra flange/chorus (which adds a whole new dimension the mix!) The mix was entirely done ‘live’, too (no re-edits or cheating to get the beats behaving themselves!)

So, whether it’s classy Dharma tracks, break-rich guest releases from Astradyne and Paniq, or even smart old rollers from Hoffman himself, sit back and let the beats flow, won’t you?

Tracklisting is as follows:
(archive-location mentioned if the original tune is a .MOD!)

1. Hoffman – “ZooWax” (99/m_end.zip)
2. Prob. – “Agent Blues” (99/m_end.zip)
3. Dharma – “Dance To The Drummer’s Beat” (mp3)
4. Prob+Ebb+Tek+Substance – “Benedict (Stylez Remix)” (99/m_bsm.zip)
5. Ramone – “Micfiend” (99/m_end.zip)
6. Distance (aka Lackluster) – “Untitled Bonus Track” (99/m_unt.zip)
7. Simon V – “Screwdriver” (mp3)
8. Hoffman (as Dreamfish) – “Unreal” (97/m_unre.zip)
9. Paniq – “Mind Eraser” (98/m_era.zip)
10. Relief+Skizo – “d.3.o” (98/m_d3o.zip)

12. Kuu – “Contours Of Infinity” (mp3)
13. Substance – “Beat For Me” (mp3)

4T Thieves – Dreamtime {mtk032}

Artist: 4T Thieves
Title:
Dreamtime
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk032
Release Date:
2000/08/07

Having last released a track on Mono almost exactly 4 years ago, it’s really been quite a long time away from the label for Isle Of Wight,UK/Finland based 4T Thieves, who’s an oldskool Amiga demo-scener of the highest grade, and also operates under the name Soundstate.

However, his return to the Monotonik fold is much welcomed, and this particular piece of casually expansive retro-activeness is strangely early-90s, in the best ‘Artifical Intelligence’-influenced ways. With soaring chords and layer upon layer of melodic electronics, you’re guaranteed a good flight in an almost B12-ish way – or your money back…

Binary – Fusion EP {mtk031}

Fusion EP

Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk031
Release Date:
2000/07/30

As a taster for the one-off and assuredly rather special forthcoming album, Monotonik is proud to present the final recordings of UK artist Binary.

Formerly signed to Planet Noisebox, and receptor of rave reviews in the NME for the ‘awkward gracefulness’ of the ‘Music Of Sound’ 10″ and ‘Brick Wall Music’ album, Binary has now decided to leave the music industry altogether. his final album, ‘Binatone’, will be released through Monotonik, so everyone can enjoy his pithy blend of electro-tinged techno for free.

This mini-EP gives a little hint of things to come, with one of the best tracks from the album, “9899”, plus a shuffling, sawtooth “Formel 2” remix by M.Gundlach (new Olympia, WA monotonik.cohort!)

Hoffman – Nu-Skool Rules {mtwdj02}

Artist: Hoffman
Title:
Nu-Skool Rules
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtwdj02
Release Date:
2000/07/22

He had a part in the first ever Mono release back in 1996, and he’s being hanging around with us ever since, poor guy. Now, UK composer/DJ Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish, fact-fans!) has been good enough to provide us with the first of two superior DJ mixes.

This one fits squarely into the Mono211 ‘breakbeats’ peg with some super-hot, cutely mixed nu-skool breaks action. So, we’re talking Waveform, Uptown Connection, Ils, BT/Hybrid (with superlative Kirsty Hawkshaw vocals), and even Luke Slater doing his super-duper super-luper action, and some interesting breakbeat/hiphop melanges in there too…

If you’re a little bored with the alternately jazz-wank or squonky-darkstep world of drum+bass, and prefer a cleaner electro sound, mark our words, this is the sound of the future. In 2023, BT will be world leader. And we’ll all be helpless drones. Hang on, is that good? Ahem. Well, anyway, great mix. Get it, and if you like the songs on it, support the artists and buy the vinyl/CDs 🙂

Tracklisting:

1. Waveform – “Breakers In Space” (TCR)
2. Breakneck – “V-Neck” (TCR)
3. Wayward Soul – “Sex, Drugs, And Computer Games” (white)
4. Waveform – “Proteus 4” (10 Kilo)
5. BT/Hybrid – “Running Down The Way” (Distinctive Breaks)
6. Waveform – “Deep Dubz” (TCR)
7. Terminalhead – “Weekend Warrior [Digweed+Muir Bedrock Dub]” (Distinctive Breaks)
8. Wayward Soul feat. Divine Styler – “PMT” (PIAS)
9. Ils – “Lights” (Fuel)
10. Breakneck – “Arse Ingear” (TCR)
11. Uptown Connection – “L.A” (TCR)
12. McMillan+Anderson – “Latino Breaks” (10 Kilo)
13. Waveform fear. EQ – “Landscapes” (TCR)

Sense – 220500 {mtk030}

Artist: Sense
Title:
220500
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk030
Release Date:
2000/07/16

We’re lucky enough to get another release from Australian quiet electronic.storm, Sense. Once languishing in slightly more obscurity than he deserved, his great remix of Lackluster for the DeFocus 12″ (“R U Oho?”) has put him squarely back on the idm radar, and there’s going to be more Sense out on vinyl/CD in the next few months – a man to watch.

In this case, we’re graced with a koto-laced ambient experience, “220500”, delicately twined with echo and its twin brother, reverb, along with cicada-like hihats and quiet bleeps, to create one of those dreamlike moments you never want to leave, over and over again, until you never want to leave the moment where you think that you never want to leave. and so on.

Vim! – Timecrunch EP {mtk029}

Artist: Vim!
Title:
Timecrunch EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk029
Release Date:
2000/07/12

Monotonik is delighted to welcome the return of the plastic inevitable, hewn from solid nostalgia, Vim! 🙂 As always, beavering away with his very own carefully skewed musical style, he serves up these 3 vignettes as the “Timecrunch EP”.

The lead-off track, “Thin Strips Of You”, hovers majestically in 3d.space before skittering around a retrig.forest, whereas “Jackie Batey” plays off the evocative arpegiating of classic Vim! with some subtle melodies – all too short, mind. Finally, “Angel Delight Saved Me” is a jaunty little trot through the vagaries of where milk-based desserts will take you in life.

He may have an upcoming Surgery compilation appearance but someone give this man a proper record deal, and quick 🙂 You can only say ‘undiscovered gem’ so many times, you know? 🙂
