Hoffman – Rewired Electronics {mtk007}

Artist: Hoffman
Title:
Rewired Electronics
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk007
Release Date:
1999/07/30

This is something very different from Hoffman – very difficult to describe, it sorta brings a different perspective to Monotonik. Skittering but solid beats, a simplicity which belies its complexity, this is techno, but not as we know it, Jim. Like a softer version of the kind of hard techno favoured by Jeff Mills and The Advent, perhaps, it wanders and phases but keeps up the 4/4 beats, ticking over above all. Sparkling and rough all at once, categorise this at your peril.

ylikulju & kyllönen – yllinkyllin EP {ep/lp release #5}

Artist: ylikulju & kyllönen
Title:
yllinkyllin EP
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
ep/lp release #5
Release Date:
1999/07/25

The EP starts with crazy “twotwo” with it’s complex beats and rhythmic effects. This track has no melody. And if it doesn’t have it then it doesn’t need it. This is probably the fastest and weirdest of Kyllönen’s tunes I’ve heard.
You can hear some jungle influences in Ylikulju’s “—“. The drums and percussions play the main role in this tune. Occasionally there come little pauses for some sine bleeps. A quite simple bass plays the melody. Not very much more instruments playing any tunes here. Some little effects and sounds are dropped in at times (without them this song could be a little boring).
“Karu” starts with spooky pads and occasional percussive hits. The beat is very much effected and distorted. A quite weird the beat is too. I know it isn’t stick to 4/4 and it’s changing all the time. There is so much happening all the time in this tune. Hear Kyllönen at his best in this crazy chaotic piece of art (though I still think that “no xivic – no pherm” and “bags 2 and 4” are his best works ever).
“lehtone” has probably the most understandable rhythm of the tracks on this EP along with “—” but that’s not a bad thing. I especially love the paranoid melodies.
The drums on “metsäserla” remind me of Autechre’s work. This tune again is mostly based on the drums and speeches and vocals of Ylikulju.
“durum” has a very bouncy beat with lots and lots (yllinkyllin in finish) of crazy tricks. I’d call it dark ambient with a vanilla twist on a hot icy day with a bikini goin afe+++78e some hot dogs we don’t know it do we?4w0.

This isn’t quite as good work as I would have expected from Kyösti and Henkka but defeneately worth a listen (or two) and it really isn’t a pain to download. And don’t you get me wrong, I like the album.

This piece of trickjazztical funknology comes at you outta Staten Island.. uhh.. Sweden, and monkeys around with your peridontal atrium in a wondrous, Squarepusher meets Ninja Tune style. Gotta love that that cut-up style courtesy of Sushi Brother, who’s aka Balrog of m211-affiliated furry animals, TPOLM.

See, Spot, see the scratching, see the oldskool samples, see the twisty synth riffs and brass hits, run, Spot, be very fearful indeed..

Dharma – Dance To The Drummer’s Beat {mtw009}

Artist: Dharma
Title:
Dance To The Drummer’s Beat
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw009
Release Date:
1999/07/03

To say we were blown away when we heard this one is probably an understatement. Since we switched to mp3 only, most m211 tunes use many of the advantages of that format, and this is a beautiful example (yehyeh, you can stop bitching now, MOD traditionalists!).

In any case, “Dance..” is an absolutely spectacular funkjam straight outta the Dharma+Prob. studiobunker in Helsinki. Dharma plays live bass and guitar on this one, and would also like to thank Panu Syrjänen for the wicked live tenor sax playing. On with the music, on with the show..?

Also, a further plug – as you might have heard, Dharma and Prob. have a single out on the Audio Couture sublabel of Moving Shadow in just a few weeks – it’s called “Soulwarrior” and it’s by Dharma+Dice – we’ve heard the tracks and they’re the funkiest d+b you’ve EVER heard, and that’s official 🙂 So don’t forget to go buy the 12″ at your local record emporium.

Lackluster – Bothersome (Mother Mix) {mtk006}

Artist: Lackluster
Title:
Bothersome (Mother Mix)
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk006
Release Date:
1999/06/29

An mp3 single taken from the limited-edition CD by Lackluster (aka Distance), this track finds him in typically drifting, understated, beautifully pin-sharp ambient form. Chords steal quietly over the top of quietly pulsating drums and weirdly insistent bass, like the slow conquering tides.. perfectly balanced, electronics practically sound natural when they’re like this.

Compare and contrast to any other mellow ambient idm you like, in the end nobody sounds quite like Lackluster (but, of course, he doesn’t sound lacklustre at all – and there’s the paradox.)
