Substance – Learning To Rock {mtw016}

Artist: Substance
Title:
Learning To Rock
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw016
Release Date:
2000/03/28

After being vaguely dormant for some time, Mono211, the sister, much more hiphop-influenced breakz+beats label to Monotonik, returns, with this rather cute tune from Helsinki, Finland native Substance.

Substance (who also releases on Monotonik as Kuu), has crafted a smartly oldskool track from an acid bassline, loping drums, and some lovely scratchy hits and vocal samples. Put the needle on the record and check it, s’il vous plait..

Title:

Label:
 No’Mo’
Catalog #:

Release Date:

*EXCLUSIVE* – tragic news, my non-magical friends. I have word from the dastardly wretches at no’mo’ that they’ve kidnapped Monotonik’s friendly and docile Vim! and subjected him to Chas ‘n Dave records until he remixes a popular cheesy garage record. The result, regurgitated at me? Vim vs. Awful Dodgy – ‘Rehash’ (1380k). Hear the original ici. Poor old Vim!, eh? No’Mo’ release #13 shows they continue to be harsh taskmasters.. damn them!

Hoffman – Assault System {mtk019}

Artist: Hoffman
Title:
Assault System
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk019
Release Date:
2000/03/23

The first Hoffman release in 6 months finds our English beatfreak in fine fettle, with a corker of an electro-ish techno track, at least partially inspired by the likes of Luke Slater (hence the title, echo-ing Planetary Assault Systems!)

As per usual, the vital Hoffman phase and form and function get together and blast a beautiful swathe through the canyons between your ears. It’s the strings and the booming bassdrum kickdrum and the trippy melodies that really make us go boom. Dubnobasswithourheads, mon?

1. 1/4 [4:16]

“pretty much the same random-generated crap”, would some conservative fellow say. i agree partially; this sounds a bit like random-generated noise. but there’s somekind of melody near the start. later on there’s those head-fucking noises, which will make you sick, if you are high-strung. maybe this track is a bit of change to those old binary-noise -tracks. this track is quite difficult to review, listen it by yourself, and decide.

[80%]

2. 2/4 [0:58]

wow, there’s even notable melodies now. the first three seconds at start sound like they’re taken from some pseudo-ambient collection. this tracks sounds a bit eerie at times,funnily enough i don’t know why. nice hi-frequency clips are dropped in in the start. but the end is a bit weaker than the start, because it’s a bit too much to the random-generated music. pretty nice, although short.

[82%]

3. 3/4 [1:08]

incredible head-fucking noise starts this track. then a bit distorted bassdrum joins the game, sounding like some binary-gabber/hardcore a while.:) but the end is even more incredible, it’s like from some c64- tape played in normal cassette-deck. maybe even a bit more fucked up. whoever created this knows how to distort and alter the sound into new random-sounding -cacophony.

[81%]

4. 4/4 [10:27]

ultraviolet ambient, i thought when i heard this track the first time. nice hi-freq strings and bizarre sound effects are present the whole running time. this is not the normal chill-out, harmonical ambient, with soothing strings, etc. perhaps i would call this autechre-ish ambient (no offense). the soundscape is filled with effects, which sound like an edited beat, can’t be sure. but the one thing is for sure, if you like raw, modern ambient, get this.

Vim! – Fit At The Front {mtk018}

Artist: Vim!
Title:
Fit At The Front
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk018
Release Date:
2000/03/16

And the Monotonik experience couldn’t be complete without a new release from the English madprofessor, and, we contend, one of the true individuals behind Monotonik’s ‘quality’, Vim!.

“Fit At The Front” reminds us a tiny bit of the AFX remix of Baby Ford’s “Normal” in the way it keeps the braindance going, but ducks and dives, spins and parries, in that uniquely screwed Vim!-style way. The melodies are weird as hell, the drums are boom bap boom in unexpected flurries, and it all adds up to a damn good time for your mp3 player.

Colongib – Scopedog, Mechanical Man {mtk017}

Artist: Colongib
Title:
Scopedog, Mechanical Man
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk017
Release Date:
2000/03/16

Oddly-monikered enigma and force behind distinctly weirdass (mais cool) vinyl and CDs on the Kracfive and Underscore labels in the US, amongst others, Colongib has kindly deigned to release this exclusive track on Monotonik.

Full of truly crunchy sounds, but with some of the twistedbreak flava that Monotonik so lusts after, this particular mp3 is full of unexpected turns and stutters. Listen, by all means, but we’re not responsible for what happens if you try to dance..

Artist: Sushi Brother
Title:
Lionfish
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk016
Release Date:
2000/03/16

From the weirdly melodic but skewed Swede, Sushi Brother, comes this piece of jaunty, twisty, jazzfunkbreak-ish music that’s almost completely uncategorisable..

If you start to mention Squarepusher meeting the fellow Swedes from the Dot label in an underpass somewhere, maybe.. well maybe that’s a laughable comparison 🙂 But it’s the only one we’ve got, so check out the feisty, squirmy lead and the spaz-out interludes and nod in disagreement..

Lackluster – 13/10/99 {mtk015}

Artist: Lackluster
Title:
13/10/99
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk015
Release Date:
2000/03/16

The first sign of a Monotonik return would be Lackluster, aka Distance, purveyor of beautifully serene ambient idm, and newly signed to Focus Records in the UK, with a 12” out already and an album due soon.

But Monotonik is still lucky enough to feature some of his work, and this exclusive mp3 delves deeply into classic Lackluster territory, with shuffling percussion, layers and layers of pure sinewaves drifting over the top, and echo after echo symbolising the wind drifting icily over the ships in Helsinki harbour, perhaps? Pretty much a must-download.
