We gladly return to the gorgeously lush hunting-ground of ex-demo-sceners, with this sublime ambient release from the artist formerly known as Radix/TPOLM and additionally known as Rymdlego, Sinespree, and his pseudonym for this release, Mosaik. Originally from Sweden, but last heard of heading to Holland, his last two Monotonik releases (as Radix and Mosaik respectively) were sinetastic in the purest way.

So, having caused at least a minor buzz on the idmlist with his confusing multiple pseudonyms and refreshingly pure sound, and with much love from demo-scene denizens for his perfect ‘chiptunes’ (he’s currently voted 3rd best of all time at chiptune.com), we decided to crassly attempt to shove his subtlety in your face some more. if you don’t mind, of course. But it’s just too yummy to pass up.

Anyhoo, “Among Plants” starts off with haltingly swelling synths and an almost Eno-esque repeated piano riff, and kicks in bubbling bass and almost imperceptible heightening through gyrating arpeggios and sound swells and eddies. For us, it sounds swell, mighty swell, something like the most blissed out eddies of an Apu-impelled Squishee coma.

Release Date:

Long time since I fell in love with a track, indeed.
The more our minds get complex, the more we need pure semplicity, need to wake up and kill all vacant and pensive moods, and be able to be astonished by the smallest thing.
Minimal cute melancholy electroliberism, constant pure beats of joie du vivre and azurine illuminated landscapes of virginity make us open hands and wish kissing the world.
Life is experimentalism, and love. :~) sniff

Tim Koch – Thug:Remixed Sampler {mtk080}

Artist: Tim Koch
Title:
Thug:Remixed Sampler
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk080
Release Date:
2002/06/02

To coincide with the release of the long-awaited Aural Industries CD, “Thug:Remixed” (go to their page for info on how to order!), us here @ Monotonik are proud to release a 3-track sampler with a taste of the re-interpretations of Tim Koch/ Thug [Defocus, AI, Surgery] available on the disc itself.

Although the CD contains remixes by a whole bunch of other supercool idm types (Pimmon, Aspen, Superscience, Octopus Inc, Sense, and more!), we picked three of the most intriguing to put out there.

First up, Swedish duo Boulderdash, best known for their landmark 2000 release on RUC, “We Never Went to Koxut Island”, re-interpret Thug’s “123Heart” in heartbreaking style, all irregular drum gorgeousness and soulfelt layered shuffle.

Secondly, we find Sydney, Australia-based Quark Kent re-editing Tim’s “Let Us Chip” into an almost dub-sharp drum idm pot-pourri, with Orb-ish Pepperpot weird-ass vocal samples sneaked into the mix too. Eerie.

Finally, Finland’s Lackluster, not a stranger to Monotonik release-lists himself, contributes a typically pure-of-heart remix of “Quasipede”, starting out all coy and shy, before slipping in a marvellous sine-bass and allowing it to skip all around our head for the final part of the song. All in all, a satisfying conclusion.

Fancying this natural grace and nodding while smiling is something we can’t really help doing.
Repetitive, but celestial notes wear a tough hi-freq base interlacing with trembles and reverse hits and sweet caressable -yet hidden- movements, which we can only guess the existence of.
Very animesque and enjoyable this one, will be difficult to listen to this less than 5 times a day my friends.
For those of you who are a bit fed up of evil and dark moods.. superb. 🙂

Title:
Jump Math Cupboard EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk079
Release Date:
 2002/05/17

A Canadian/Polish duo who’ve been floating around the Monotonik nexus for a good while, and finally got sucked in, this deliciously playful EP mirrors the v-idm-eogame aesthetic of their recent, and very well received “Pistachio Island” album on Merck Records, and their two smart tracks for Neo-Ouija‘s “Cottage Industries 2”, in a deft touch and wonderful attention to detail.

The mini-journey starts with “Lagomorph Jump”, replete with layered chord jams, clever stops and starts, and intriguingly offbeat melodies, before “Let Irmine Do The Math” slides into view, pushing a quiet storm with initially proud ambience, then oddly proto-jazz groove. And to end it all, “New Cupboard From Ikea” is absolutely classic idm, with noble squeaks and proud stutters to the fore.

More electroxperimentalism from our fav dynamic duo; Wakax and Qewza take and wear their gusoku for some truly evil occasion.
Nipponic voices straight from inferno and totally crazy beats attack our mind and go directly into the brain; a continuous assault to our senses, which definitely explodes after 3mins of cyber intro.
A demon is being driven out from one of the numerous, countless hells underground, and with his beautiful smile makes us participants of his sumptuous feast; but, we can never leave.
A bakuhatsu of killa energy erupts, and we’re completely lost between quakes and blue flames. An undead samurai thrills and paws and calls the name.

Aleksi Eeben – Music Box {mtk078}

Artist: Aleksi Eeben
Title:
Music Box
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk078
Release Date:
2002/05/05

After releasing a pseudonymous EP from Finland’s Aleksi Eeben a few months ago, we kept an eye on his work further, only to discover the _amazing_ Commodore 64 work he’s been doing with his self-coded John Player, which brings a ‘tracker’-style interface to bear on the C64. And if you’re wondering who this Aleksi fellow is and where he came from – well, as Heatbeat of the infamous CNCD, he was regularly voted one of the best ever Amiga .MOD composers back in the early ’90s.

So, given a few years, and a platform move _backwards_ this time round, heh, Aleksi’s work just keeps getting better. This collection of .SIDs, 18 in all, plus a ‘best-of’ selection of 7 .MP3 conversions, were specially ripped for Monotonik from the Commodore 64 “Music Box” music-disc series which have been released over the past 3 or 4 months, and which would otherwise be far too obscure for anyone’s good.

In any case, grab the .SIDs for the full picture, but if you want to delve into the .MP3s as a start point, try the insane catchiness of “75% Sale”, the messed-up c64 d+b of “Flight Of The Bumblebee”, or the superclever- ness of “The All-Family Stomp”. But, believe us, it’s all good.

Release Date:

Oo some pure groovy mellowness at last, and right skilled as we like!
Crazy but well-constructed and constant beats interlace with a lullabye-ish carillon melody, all accompanied by a superb -again- groovy bassline and tempo hihats.
Hmm yea naive would be the right word but hey the real description comes with the song itself innit?
The whole track is really _full_ of itself, genuine and a bit ingenuous; “ignorance is bliss” says our guest and we nod with assent. :))

Artist: ‘MbROMO
Title:
Untitled EP

 Ogredung
Catalog #:
od043
Release Date:
2002/04/18

Our new head brings his first EP together with new moods in the ogre’s house.
The first track, right in your face, much drill’n’bass yeah, a bit dreamy, and the bass is played live. It presents a happy collection of music, even though the following ones are much more ‘blue’ than it. The whole work is a made with technique, nothing is casual, and thank god, this is something whistleable at last!
Nothing to do with obviousity though, we can advert some airs a la Tao in some pieces, and this should be pretty enough for you to make this release worth than a download! 😛
