Philipp Weigl – Common Cause {COM14}

Artist: Philipp Weigl
Title:
Common Cause
Label:
 Comatronic
Catalog #:
COM14
Release Date:
2005/06/30

The introductory “The Waiting” features chirring pads, sparingly used dub elements and lets you get acquainted with your companion on this half-hour long journey through emotion, melancholia and passion: Philipp Weigl. “Strangers” comes up with a set of rich pads, a nicely delayed piano pattern and minimal, straight-line beats. Like in “While You’re Sleeping”, Weigl’s voice is skillfully incorporated into mix and arrangement, thus creating a calm but elusive atmosphere. In “Sometimes You Lose” an alienesque voice is accompanied by predominant pads and a deep, wobbling bassline, while the slow-motion title track “Common Cause” makes use of clearer drawn vocal lines and completes a thoroughly intense and thought-provoking listening experience.

Aereal – Moved Moment EP {mtk148}

Artist: Aereal
Title:
Moved Moment EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk148
Release Date:
2005/06/19

We last released something from UK idm-er Aereal all the way back in 2001, so we were delighted when he contacted us and asked us to release a short EP with some of the best tracks he’s worked on since then. Thus, we have the ‘Moved Moment EP’, a four-track set of delightfully looping electronic music.

So, where are we? We start off with ‘Move Moment’, a driving, driven piece of percussive melodic goodness, before moving on to the wonderfully smooth ‘Direct Medic’, and onward and upward to the almost vibrating melodic techno of ‘3D Situation’, a strange mix of the B12-ish Warp and even more Detroit-esque sounds, but with a touch of the new chill in there too. We finish off with the marginally more downtempo ‘Solitary Motions’, and a wonderfully considered end to a classy EP – a touch of the past, but a touch of the gleaming future, too.

Goto80 – Bravo {CANDY007}

Artist: Goto80
Title:
Bravo
Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY007
Release Date:
2005/06/11

Already a well-known name in the indie scene for his creative and chaotic meddling with old computers, Goto80 continues to bring us some of the most incredible 8-bit sonics of this world.

With the “Bravo E.P.” Goto80 is giving us a hearty and overdriven welcome in “Välkomstvisan”, an addictive “Semieasy” samba adventure and the dark, fuzzy madness of “Wombatman”.

To add some extra flavour to this release we’ve let Goto80 himself do a culinary rework on “Välkomstvisan” and our Liquid Stranger is let loose once again to take “Wombatman” to another dimension. We also give a warm welcome to mr. Hally from Japan who is doing a remarkable NES remix of “Semieasy”.

Cover design by Raul BB at http://www.entter.com

1. VÄLKOMSTVISAN
This release starts of with a warm welcoming message from Goto80 in “Välkomstvisan”, a mad and overdriven party tune with smurf vocals and an altogether happy vibe…and the typical Swedish out of control attitude.

2. SEMIEASY
Prepare for some 8-bit Semieasy samba action. Goto80 takes us to a sunny beach with Piña coladas, palm trees, booty shaking and more Piña coladas. A summer hit!

3. WOMBATMAN
After dark the Wombatman emerges from his dark and filthy cave, spreading his leathery wings before he sets of into the night. Welcome to Wombat land!

4. VÄLKOMSTVISAN (GOTO80 REWORK)
Where the original version of “Välkomstvisan” was all about wild, boozing, rhesus monkey-festivity and waking up in an unfamiliar stairwell with an immense hangover, this remix is welcoming you with a delicious 8-bit banquet. So go on and taste the electronic lobster.

5. SEMIEASY (HALLY REMIX)
Some additional Piña Coladas later Hally delivers his vivid version of “Semieasy”, full of fun and laughter. Krakel Spektakel and Simsalabim!

6. WOMBATMAN (LIQUID STRANGERS DUPLOMIX)
…and Wombatman continues to tour the world in Liquid Strangers cosy, purple duplo-mobile. Smiling as he races from country to country in this jet set journey full of twist and turns and blips and squeals.

02 – Semiasy

Trey Smith – No Lemons, No Melon {4four001}

Artist: Trey Smith
Title:
No Lemons, No Melon
Label:
 4four
Catalog #:

Release Date:
2005/06/02

After over a year in the wilderness Trey’s awesome tech-house stormers finally see the light of day. It’s been a real crime that these tracks have been buried for so long (although Trey freely admits he didn’t really try hard enough to get them signed). We now offer them to you in the hope that Trey finally gets the credit he deserves. For me the real stand out tracks are Slickboy and Backpeddling, the former a tech-house/electro crossover with a sublimely funky steppin’ b-line, the later being a lush prog-edged groover. That’s not to downplay the quality of the other tracks, I once dropped all five of these in a single set!
