Artist: Vim!
Title:
Norman
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#119
Release Date:
1997/12/21

Mono’s final release of 1997, most likely, and an appropriately.. nice one. 🙂 Vim! really kicks the technique unlike anyone else, and here’s another example of that fact. I mean, _what_ is going on here? Can anyone tell us? It’s Aphex Twin meeting Tim Follin on a deserted road and beating the crap outta each other, we guess. Stand well clear and watch for the pyrotechnics. 🙂

Ice Climber – Teddy Bear Magix EP {REL#118}

Artist: Ice Climber
Title:
Teddy Bear Magix EP
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#118
Release Date:
1997/12/16

“i wage war on the tracking industry”. Live and direct from the land of the rising sun comes a supa-skilful 5-track EP from ice.climber, formerly known as Karl/Kosmic, sometimes known as Bogdan, permanently a maverick fixture somewhere on the scene. This is nice, very nice indeed, and some of da tracks are kinda remixes of some recent Mono tracks (Zyad and others…) Well, perhaps reinterpretations using the same samples would be closer to the truth. 🙂 Whatever, ignore ice.climber at your peril. ignore mono at your penelope pitstop. 🙂

Distance – Klusterpunk EP {rel#10}

Artist: Distance
Title:
Klusterpunk EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
rel#10
Release Date:
1997/12/13

Although Distance appears to think he’s the worst musician in the world, heh, his tracks speak volumes about how good he really is. Which is pretty damn majestic, really. Here’s another instalment of the swirling, dense, melody-repetition-led techno that makes him one of the best elektronik musicians on the scene right now. “A Walking Simmer” is an especially good example of twisted logic made sound. And “Soundscapes 2″… whoa! Enjoy the macabre.

Artist: Dreamfish
Title:
Twisted Riddim EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
rel#o9
Release Date:
1997/12/09

Blimey. Dreamfish has muscled up his style and is making some of the meatiest, most harmful beats to be spat outta a computer for a damn long time – and here’s some more evidence. Another mix of the fearsome “Retro DNA”, and a whole new set of twisted riddims. Let’s face it, it’s no longer just a little aural harassment – it’s getting personal. Cover your ears, repair to the concrete bunkers, and await instructions. Quick.

Artist: Jazz+Fndr
Title:
Echtzeit (rmx)
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#117
Release Date:
1997/12/07

Jazz and Fndr guest it up with this rather lovely drum+bass track, perfect for chilling out or rocking the funky beat, depending on how loud you play it. Mono recommends you play it very loud indeed. 🙂 Four channels can still kick some sizable ass, even with supa-complex jungle riddims, and here’s some further proof. Enjoy.

Artist: Zyad
Title:
Evil Banquet EP
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#116
Release Date:
1997/12/01

The first Mono release by Zyad, our newest member, and it’s pretty easy to see how he fits in. Very nicely, as it happens. 🙂 So, we got more downbeat bigbeat pleasures for your cerebellum – just sit up and say thankyou. Although there’s definitely some scary, scary static-filled undertones to both these tracks. Be slightly afraid, be very slightly afraid. 🙂

Artist: Substance
Title:
Ruff Timez
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
REL#115
Release Date:
1997/11/25

Ooch. Some serious roughness from the normally gentle and caring Substance. 😉 Well, ok, he’s hardly been a saint, but this is downright prosecutable. Jazz bass, twinkling hi-hats, and a buzz, buzz, buzz buzz in your eardrum bass from somewhere da other side of Pluto. The planet, not the cartoon character. Stand back before igniting.
