Vektrex – Plutonics EP {mtk013}

Artist: Vektrex
Title:
Plutonics EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk013
Release Date:
2000/01/03

A new EP from a brand new artist, Icelandic bringer of non-tranquility Vektrex, and whilst “Jacket From Planet Pluto” is an eloquent electro-ish track with a sneaky ‘masters-of-triphop’ sample and urgent, clicking percussion, the crazed beeps of “Perfect Pitch” bring to mind a NES game gone horribly, horribly wrong. Timestretching chip-chords and pitchbending sinewaves? Yikes, call the Game Genie right now!

Season’s greetings from the Monotonik klan come in the form of this wonderful duo from Vim!, labelstar and uniquely.. unique artist. So we kick it with trademark retro melodies in “4-Bit Xmas” and then do some warped Arfur Daley-sampling breakwizardry with “Wakey Wakey Wales – It’s Christmas!” If only Yuletide could always be as warped as this.

Sushi Brother – Shadowfighter (Frank+Bill Remix) {mtk011}

Artist: Sushi Brother
Title:
Shadowfighter (Frank+Bill Remix)
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk011
Release Date:
1999/11/26

Completely transmogrified from its original mono211 release, this amazing remix comes from swedish artist frank bolero, who’s been floating around negativspace for some time, along with his partner in crime bill yard.

so what was once ninja-esque breakz flips right around into the kind of pure tones and drop dead lovely melodies that are hopefully coming to characterise the monotonik label – sinewave arpeggios, shuffling drums, phasing bass, drifting chords.. makes you wanna die, no? or sigh. or smile. yes, let’s smile.

.. And The Secret Formula – The Amazing Power Of The.. {mtw015}

Artist: .. And The Secret Formula
Title:
The Amazing Power Of The..
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:

Release Date:

Round, and round, and round he goes. And where he stops, nobody knows. Another king-of-secrets artist delivers a freaky slab of funk that kicks somewhere between Squarepusher, Funki Porcini, and someone else we can’t quite place.

That’s right, sportsfans, the steel drum, the jazz percussion, the weird-as-heck instrumentation, the cowbell, for pity’s sake! Does none of this make any sense? Probably not, but it’s nice notsense.

Micro.Spy – Flimflam {mtw014}

Artist: Micro.Spy
Title:
Flimflam
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw014
Release Date:
1999/10/24

Arizona’s majestic Micro.Spy collective, including Tek, who produced one of the classic early m211 mp3 tracks in “Benedict”, come right back at us with “Flimflam”, and boy, does this one kick up a storm? Tek also has a forthcoming DJ set which’ll be posted up on the m211 website, and as a set of influences (BT, Underworld, plenty of US breaks), it pretty much maps out the style that these guys have down sososo well.

Oh, there’s a swearword hidden in the track somewhere, but don’t let it bother you. 🙂 Just listen to the wicked breakbeat style – this is the kind of release mono211 would like to think would characterise its style, going forward – that and the natty Squarepusher-ish jazz-jam, which you’ll see a lot of in forthcoming releases.. cool!

Simon V – Screwdriver {mtw013}

Artist: Simon V
Title:
Screwdriver
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw013
Release Date:
1999/10/03

Thanks to old friend Simon V. and Santorin Recordings (http://www.santorin.de), we have a guestrelease extra-ordinaire in a wicked bdrum+snare stylee. This particular bass-b00mer is actually released as a real 12-inch single on Santorin – but they’ve actually given it to us to put out for free on m211 too. Youch, d+b with a real twisted analogue edge.

So nod your head hard to the menacing kool roc bass action, and go seek out the original vinyl in the shops so you can perform the essential reeeee-wind. 🙂 Booyaka booyaka?

Thug – Obatem By Night {mtk010}

Artist: Thug
Title:
Obatem By Night
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk010
Release Date:
1999/09/29

Thug (aka Serkul, a previous Monotonik artist), has been getting some pretty nice press recently for his debut CD “Isolated Rhythm Chock” on the Aural Industries label outta Australia. And we’re lucky enough to be able to release “Obatem By Night”, an exclusive track from him, not on the album and only available on mp3 from da Monotonik homies.

Listen to the track and you’ll find alternately beautiful fuzz and extremely concentrated melodies, reminiscent perhaps of Black Dog at their most melancholic. The hihat ticks away and time becomes a loop?

Hope you enjoy this track – we hope to feature more of Thug’s music in the future, and more info about his CD can be found at http://www.aural-industries.com.au – go patronise, already.

Vinyl Matt – From The Education {mtw012}

Artist: Vinyl Matt
Title:
From The Education
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw012
Release Date:
1999/09/09

From quite literally out of nowhere comes this lush, beautiful ‘triphop’ (although that’s probably an over-used phrase) track from the excellent Vinyl Matt. A choice sample (that soundtrack fans may or may not recognise), all underpinned by some gorgeously halfspeed drums and drifty crunchiness, means perfect music for relaxing in the land where time stands still.

Hopefully we’ll be hearing more from the mysterious Vinyl Matt soon, but in the meantime, enjoy the first fruits of his labour.

Bearded Vault System – Selling Puppies From A Tray {mtk009}

Artist: Bearded Vault System
Title:
Selling Puppies From A Tray
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk009
Release Date:
1999/09/08

This release comes from Bearded Vault System, and that’s not a facial-hair-related security device, rather the pseudonymous Bauri of Saundart Recordings, purveyor of enchanting and sometimes wild electronic noises. This particular track is beguiling, almost fluid techno, with spiky melodies drifting in and out of focus, but plenty of blessed minimalism too. Highly recommended.

Check the Saundart website at: http://www.underjord.net/saundart for all kinds of nice info, CDRs to buy, and discographies – Bauri has a forthcoming 12-inch on Pitchcadet Records, who are also putting out stuff by Jake Mandell, Max Tundra, and even Funkstorung, so we’re very happy indeed to feature one of his tracks on Monotonik.

Prob. + Mirko – Body Rock {mtw011}

Artist: Prob. + Mirko
Title:
Body Rock
Label:
Mono211
Catalog #:
mtw011
Release Date:
1999/08/22

Much more of a ‘fun’ release than anything else, this great piece of electro from Helsinki guys Prob+Mirko was meant to compete in the mp3 competition at Assembly 99, the hackerdemo party held a couple of weeks back. But in the end it was encoded at the wrong rate and got disqualified, so we get the benefit of the damn catchy vocoded lyrics and oldskool robotikvoices (yes, it’s all their own work, not samples..) for the first time on m211.

‘We are here to make you move, so come on people – rock the groove!’
