Sense – Kieko {mtk039}

Artist: Sense
Title:
Kieko
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk039
Release Date:
2000/10/22

After his Oompa-Loompah-worrying first track on Monotonik and his divine Lackluster remix for the “R U Oho?” 12″ on DeFocus, Sense comes out with another gorgeous mtk.release ahead of his Aural Industries EPs due out later this year.

“Kieko”, then, would be quietly dazzling idm-ish techno of the highest order – all pattering synths and gently reverberating drums, a subtle waterfall of sound. Like a lot of recent Monotonik releases, forget your glitch, let’s worship the melody, guvnor. Check the technique – see if you can follow this?

Super Science – Sometimes We’re Happy {mtk038}

Artist: Super Science
Title:
Sometimes We’re Happy
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk038
Release Date:
2000/10/13

The second release on Monotonik for Australian artist Super Science, this breathy, expansive mp3 comes from his first CD on Surgery Records, “Love Like Life In Miniature”.

“Sometimes We’re Happy”, like much of the album, combines stylish vocal-punctuated tectonics with unexpected blips and beeps, always keeping it melodic, always constructive, always new. But most of all, with the voice-layering and the soaring chords, this music is soulful. Comparisons? A more videogamesavvy Capitol K, perhaps.. at any rate, you owe yourself a listen to find out.

[“Love Like Life In Miniature” is now (Oct.’00) available outside Australia via such excellent online
stockists as Skimo, Safety In Numbers, and Synthaesthesia..]

_ And The Secret Formula – Powerman {mtk037}

Artist: _ And The Secret Formula
Title:
Powerman
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk037
Release Date:
2000/10/05

Far be it for us to be mysterious, but _ And The Secret Formula is damn spooky in his (its?) ability to glide up to our virtual front door, throw an mp3-containing brick thru it, and disappear back into the night again. Who _was_ that masked musician?

In this case, it was a masked musician who starts by cutting up rap lyrics into miniscule pieces, and then re-assembling them into geek-beatbox-heaven. Then dump a damn funky beat over the top, a little booty bass, some slick synth licks, and you end up with a weirdly unclassifiable piece of electronics. It’s like if Ol’ Dirty Bastard had gone to school with magnetic techno monkeys, innit?

Binary – Binatone {mtk036}

Artist: Binary
Title:
Binatone
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk036
Release Date:
2000/09/28

Long-awaited, here’s the full (and final!) album from UK artist Binary. Following critical acclaim for his 12″ on UK label Planet Noisebox, “The Music Of Sound”, constructed entirely out of noises from household objects, and the subsequent CD “Brick Wall Music”, he elected to stop releasing music altogether, and donated this album to Monotonik for a freely spreadable release online…

As a result, you get quite a lot for your money – since you pay.. no money. From the lead-off “Vienna Gigolo”, which sets the tone by nimbly cutting up the sine-waved purity of synth trills with some intricately simple electro drum breaks, this lo-fi mofo of a release blends simple Kraftwerk-ian thrills with a SID chip-ish oldskool-videogame electro stylee, as evidenced by track-names such as “Ivor Commodore” and “Last Night Rob Hubbard Saved My Life”. Mm, Rob Hubbard.

So, whether it be the continuation of the “Ballad Of Pam And Tommy” saga from his last CD (replete with samples from the Anderson-Lee home-video extraganza, still?), or the lazy vs. sharp chordsnarechordsnare looping of “More Monday Then Usual”, Binary passes all sound exams with flying colors. And if you want to return to a time when dinosaurs (with 64k of RAM) ruled the globe, “Binatone” is the perfect way to do it.

K.Ylikulju – Memories Of Tomorrow {ep/lp release #17}

Artist: K.Ylikulju
Title:
Memories Of Tomorrow
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
ep/lp release #17
Release Date:
2000/09/19

If you’ve been waiting for a second Clayderman from K.Ylikulju’s new ep you might be dissapointed because Memories Of Tomorrow is a three-track ambient ep so there’s no fast beats or raving basslines. Though, If you ask me this is as good as Clayderman, maybe even better: Memories Of Tomorrow has a clear melancholic theme and I’d say the soundscape is richer than on Clayderman.
At[1] is build on a pulsating sequence pad with layers of organ and a choir. Later on the heavily compressed drums come along still keeping the tune on it’s slow tempo melancholic way.
At[2] was released earlier this year on the Rikos Records Promo CD. Defeneately one of the best tunes on that compilation. At[2] also builds on a sequence (like At[1]) which plays more or less on the back ground for the whole song. A string pad and a bass line forms a perfect harmonic combination with the sequence and the fading-in piano loop really hits the spot. This is the best ambient track I’ve heard this year.
As at[1] and at[2] are very similar to each other (the sequences and harmony combinations and all that) “chored” the track between them is more minimal – mainly played on strings and a sine bell of some kind. Still this track has a moving and memorable melody and fits on the album.

All three tracks are great compositions and real masterpieces that will move you for sure. Only thing to critisize here is the album’s name which reminds me of Enya. Oh yeah, and as usual you can get this album on CD too. It even includes a 22 min bonus track (called Don’t listen) which more than doubles the running time. Just contact Kyösti below.

8bit Rockers – Arcade Hits {ep/lp release #16}

Artist: 8bit Rockers
Title:
Arcade Hits
Label:
 Milk
Catalog #:
ep/lp release #16
Release Date:
2000/09/19

Arcade Hits is a full-length album with 15 tracks of music you could call game-electro sound. A heavy influence of music from late 80’s/early 90’s console or c64 games is heard on the whole album made by the man behind the names Illusion and ShamusCase, Sami Liuski. This isn’t the real retro electro though because he made the sounds with modern synthesizers using today’s sound manipulation (or that’s how it sounds like anyway).

Some of the tracks are made clearly from the comical view of things (as “russian kowboy” and “kittys theme”). Still this shouldn’t be thought as a parody or a joke – Arcade Hits is more of a salute to the c64 or nintedo music scene. All the tracks really aren’t game-electro: “estee lauder” is an ambient track (with a little harsh sound though) and tracks like “squareballs”, “kittys theme” and “sugardrunk” have crazy filtered jungle beats (the squarepusher-kind). “dolf” even samples acoustic guitar. The bonus tracks are more like 80’s disco tunes (“electro disco” even has great vocoder vocals).This is a must for people who get shivers in their spine when hearing chip or sid music. Though I didn’t spend my youth playing nintendo or c64 I like this album a lot. So I can recommend this for everyone.
