Transient – Work/Play EP {mtk157}

Artist: Transient
Title:
Work/Play EP
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk157
Release Date:
2005/12/18

U.S. veteran idm artist Transient is practically an old hand at Monotonik releases now, since this is his third for the label, quite apart from some stunning EPs and albums for netlabels like One and his own Noisy Vagabond Recordings.

And ‘Work/Play EP’ is a wonderful, aptly named split album, since it was composed both on work breaks with a Palm handheld (the ‘Work’ half) and at home using Impulse Tracker (the ‘Play’ half), and both halves show inspired mastery of melody, vocoded vocals, and bleep idm.

Starting with the ‘Work’ half, ‘Direct’ is tremendously smart idmpop, happily proclaiming that ‘the things you desire will destroy you’. Other highlights of the ‘Work’ side include the loping, considered ‘I’m Going To Explode’, as well as the witty ‘Trashybin’. As for ‘Play’, it’s more clipped, and almost more retro, but just as lovable, with ‘Toasted’ sounding almost like it’s being played backward, and ‘Chip Ship’ layering on layers and layers of layers, before ‘Play’ slides and slithers around melodic wavelenghts that make us all happy to be alive. It’s more transforming transience from Transient, and we thank him profusely.

Liquid Stranger – Dead Or Alive {CANDY016}

Artist: Liquid Stranger
Title:
Dead Or Alive
Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY016
Release Date:
2005/12/10

We decided to pay Liquid Stranger a visit.

He has been hiding in a graveyard ever since Shuggoman tried to put him on fire during a performance in Wien. Apparently Liquid Stranger owed him loads of royalty $$$ from their kinky-ragga-days but refused to pay back. “The money is gone yo” he said when we asked him.

Now our Stranger is on the run and had to sell eight of his tracks to Candy Mind just to get some money for food…and beer…and woman…and guns and such…whatever.

What will happen to mr Liquid only the future can tell. Is he going to survive? Will he flee to an exotic island and disappear forever?

We don´t know, but anyway, we are happy to get the tunes and here they are:

1. THE BATTLE OF MAGALON
As the story opens, the battle of Magalon is about to take place. We join forces with the Liquid Strangers and get to know the dazzing Dragonhawks.

2. VODKA PÅ DAGEN OCH TEQUILA PÅ KVÄLLEN
Most people drink whatever they can find at any hour of the day.
However, Liquid Strangers brother knows there is a perfect time for everything and that goes for drinking aswell…so when is the time for some Tequila and when should you use large amounts of Vodka instead??

3. BEAUTIFUL
They say that beauty is in the eye of its holder, but it can actually also be in the ear of its holder or even the mouth of its holder.

4. TROLLDEG
When Liquid Stranger is tired he enjoys playing with his 43 Tons of Trolldeg. He does all kinds of things with it but most of the time he makes hats for the Candy Mind crew.

5. EXFOLIANT
When the Stranger is in a really good mood after a gig he always puts on some of his finest Exfoliant before he goes to bed. Ok, well, perhaps it is a bit sticky but he likes it anyway.

6. FISKGRÄDDE
It is tasty, nutritious and has a nice colour. Our Stranger use it as often as possible and even invited the Pope over for a fashionable Fiskgrädde-dinner once.

7. ARMADA
Rumours say that in 1987 the Liquid Stranger was abducted by an armada of (illegal) aliens and had to travel all over the world for 3 long years in a dirty trailer filled with Gypsies.

8. PEG
Now, try to clear the board by jumping pegs over other pegs, in either the horizontal or vertical dimensions. The “jumped” peg will be removed from the board. The objective of the track is to have only one peg remaining. Good luck!

Dead Eros – When {mtk156}

Artist: Dead Eros
Title:
When
Label:
Monotonik
Catalog #:
mtk156
Release Date:
2005/11/25

Another debut, then, and this time an American practitioner of the dark idm arts, in the form of Ann Arbor, MI-based Dead Eros. Monsieur Eros has run his own Music Is For Assholes label for some time, hangs with the Ghostly International chaps, but produces a distinctly contrasting output to anything they might put out – from light, sinewave-strewn idm to dark, foreboding ambient.

Thus, ‘When EP’ is three pieces of brightness and one chunk of shadow, with lead track ‘When We Are Home’ characterizing the whole kit and caboodle, meandering and majestic all at once. Even more precise is ‘When We Are Scared’, a choral call to microchips everywhere, before ‘I Don’t Need To Wake Up’ goes deep into the recesses, somewhere near Biosphere territory, and things end of the offbeat, quirky, found-itself-again stylings of ‘When We Are Lost’. But we’re not lost – we’re very much here, and happy, and now.

Perky Chap – Soulshit {CANDY015}

Artist: Perky Chap
Title:
Soulshit
Label:
Candy Mind Records
Catalog #:
CANDY015
Release Date:
2005/11/20

Ladies and gentlemen, let us all be very quiet when our new artist, Perky Chap, plays his songs. With a repertoire of all from housey pop music to introvert and sensfull drill’n’bass, this release is something special.

He is showing us how to smash in a happy “Badminton Song”, gives us a vampire drum’n’bass scare in “Nosferatu” and ending it all with the bigbang self-examinating noisy meditation “Soulshit”. The chap is really taking us on a journey to remember, a journey you’ll never forget…

We’ve said this before and we say it again: Fasten your seat belts, close you’re eyes and… open up your ears.

1. MUSIC IS MUSIC
Some things are hard to grasp. Sometimes it can be difficult to feel if your senses are telling the truth. And to tell what’s right and what’s wrong can also be tricky. Sometimes it can be impossible to know WHAT IS.
But one thing is always true: music is music!

2. BADMINTON SONG
Wanna join Perky Chap for a Badminton game? But be careful, the chap is a trickster, our guess is you’ll never beat him…

3. MAGIC RINGS
On a field trip to the future, the chap is finding a magical ring that can help him change his skin colour. And most fantastic of all: it’s a true 16-bit ring!

4. NOSFERATU
All vampires are scary, they are sucking blood and they tend to spend most of their days inside horrible castles. But most scary of them all are the imitated vampires… Watch your steps when you’re meeting with Nosferatu!

5. STOLEN GOODS
Perky is going funky. Let’s dance along to this break-ghost-funk-party-yeah-stuff.

6. SOULSHIT
Darkness and light, happiness and sadness.
This perky meditation takes you on an excursion to all the areas of your soul, a journey you’ll never remember and therefore never forget…
