Artist: Azazel
Title:
PolarBjornAttack
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#45
Release Date:
1996/10/29

Zooooom. Time for Mono to get funky, we feel, and who better to do it for us than Azze of The Black Lotus? It may make your head nod unashamedly, and it may sound just a little bit like Lizardking, but it sure as hell rawks. Yeah, rawks. Definitely a contender for catchiest Mono tune so far. Thanks Azze, we owe ya several. 🙂

4TThieves – Ebbtide Moon {MOD#44}

Artist: 4TThieves
Title:
Ebbtide Moon
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#44
Release Date:
1996/10/23

Another completely original guest-star tune from the ‘reclusive’ 4T Thieves, stuck out on an island off the South Coast of England making some of the weirdest, most exhileratingly alien MODs I’ve heard in quite a while. Hear the depth, won’t you? Stuck out in the moons of Venus, diving into the seas beneath Saturn, or just chillin’ out in your bedroom, Mono takes you out there. Out _there_ 🙂

Carebear – Stop {MOD#43}

Artist: Carebear
Title:
Stop
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#43
Release Date:
1996/10/19

Time for techno? Carebear immediately overturns the mellow image he’s cultivated from previous Mono releases with this smart piece of ?0? riddim. Apparently, with a De La Soul sample, too, although not exactly an obvious one, izit? Nice.

Hollywood – Phase 187 {MOD#42}

Artist: Hollywood
Title:
Phase 187
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#42
Release Date:
1996/10/12

Well, it’s taken me almost 50 Mono releases, but I (h0l) have finally got round to releasing a proper tune on Mono (my other two releases were just cleaning up some minor unreleased stuff, really.) Phew. And it’s my first tune for 6 months, too, due to final exams at uni, my new job, and running Mono all getting in the way. Anyhow, hope you enjoy the result.

The “I wanna be a spaceman” sample is courtesy of Mr. Noel Gallagher of the popular beat combo Oasis, by the way, and it’s stolen from an Oasis bootleg. Scoooore. 🙂

Mortimer Twang – Theme {MOD#41}

Artist: Mortimer Twang
Title:
Theme
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#41
Release Date:
1996/10/08

Wow. I hate being accused of over-hyping Mono, but this track just rules. I’ve been listening to almost constantly ever since Mortimer Tee mailed it to me about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and I’m delighted I finally got a chance to release it. What’s the step above that Mortimer takes? I’m not really sure, but his tunes have so much soul, and that’s all too often missing in MODs. And yet, it’s got the moves too – listen to that drum-break strut and spin. *sigh*.

Anyhow, enough hype. Just enjoy.

Vivid + ChuckB – Drop The Bass Knob {MUL#04}

Artist: Vivid + ChuckB
Title:
Drop The Bass Knob
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MUL#04
Release Date:
1996/10/05

More multichannel meanderings, with a release from sole Mono multichanneler ChuckB and ubiquitous whizz Vivid – that’ll do nicely, thankyou. Naturally, you can check out both of these musicians in their alternative surroundings of (still) the best PC music-group around, Kosmic – check out http://www.kosmic.com or http://www.spaz.com/~kosmic on the Web. But Mono’s zooming up the leftfield to unseat the masters. 🙂

Substance – Sladdfack {MOD#40}

Artist: Substance
Title:
Sladdfack
Label:
Mono
Catalog #:
MOD#40
Release Date:
1996/10/02

Substance strikes back with a Mono release which isn’t minimalist trance. 🙂 In fact, Substance’s style extends way past tranceland (check out the melodic junglism of his Assembly96 tune, “The Hub”, or indeed “Drum+Bass Frenzie”), and this time he’s cooked up an intriguing tekno with metal breaks and frazzled synths piece, inspired by a certain Aphex Twin collaborator, Mike Paradinas. Nice, sorted, and damn original. Oh, and the title means something very silly in a non-English language.
